The current events are a result of Harald deciding to ignore everyone’s advice. He was told at multiple points that the WG is evil my nigga, they commit nefarious acts my nigga. Even the theatre chick calls him out. He’s now going to traumatize one of his kids due to being the most raped man alive.

Do you even read the story? He went full lib because he wanted to improve the image of the Giants. He did not do it for Ida. He just felt guilty for being a punk and went off the deep end with other wrong crowd. His mistake was assuming that there was no evil in the WG.

i never actually thought of it that way but the nika fruit being being like the one ring and having a mind of its own and the ability to effect things around it makes sense. it also fits with the theory that devil fruits can find their way to people. like how aces fruit ended up with sabo.
now that i really think about it as well even before he had full nika powers luffy was freeing people left and right. maybe thats why the straw hats always just so happen to find their way to places or people that need help.
though even if thats not the case its still interesting to think about how much is being effected by devil fruits
so harald did have good intentions he was just too blinded by his goal to realize he was being used. also i wonder if immortality being in quotes is on purpose or not.
because it makes me think that the immortality is conditional upon you doing things to serve imu. but if you choose to go against it or fail in your goal the immortality goes away like a voided contract.

I am of the belief that Oda does not give a shit about the discourse on Reddit, 4Chan, or any of its Japanese equivalents, and fuck me if that’s going to be what break week is going to be centered on.
@Incecticyder basically pointed out what happened: Harald did what he did because he thought that being part of the WG was honestly the best move for the future of Elbaf, and our political spectrum and where he falls on that spectrum has nothing to do with the moves he made. Harald’s mistake was he underestimated the extent to which the WG will go to in order to hold onto power and control their lackeys, in this case “Imu’s brand of pledging allegiance and being a God’s Knight being that your entire country is slaves to a shadow ruler with demon powers that include controlling both the body and the mind.”
And TBH, I think the takeaway of Harald’s moves is to just do a 180 and just go “be a completely cynical asshole who trusts no one” and just “changing who you are is on its face the worst thing you can do” is probably missing the point.

The imaginary dead giant isn't going to suck your cock. And though Ida never said "sell your soul to the devil", far from it, she was the first pushback he ever had to the raiding ways. She was very much the seed that started Harald's journey of killing Elbaf through good intentions.
He was warned multiple times by Rocks, saw that said goverment killed Rocks after going for his family, like Hodgepodge says here

I’m not sure what Harald thought of outside of how “this time things are going to be different” when he heard those stories. I wonder if some people saw how adamant Harald was and just thought that “the WG can’t be trusted” is just something Harald had to learn firsthand, especially since Harald got to meet the Gorosei and Imu.

Luffy helping people is basically a side effect of the dickhead causing trouble in the area starting shit with Luffy. Even with Vivi if Baroque works had let the Strawhats pass through unharassed Luffy and Co would not have gotten involved.

Don't forget that Elbaf went through a massive famine in which his people only survived through outside help. He isn't just attempting to make up for the fact that he and other giants were dickheads he is attempting to set up alliances to prevent that from happening again. By the time he ripped off his horns he is deep in sunk cost because he had betrayed his best friend to bring the giants into the world and now can't go back on it else that betrayal becomes meaningless.
He did nope out when Imu made it clear he views giants as a weapon and just wants to enslave them all instead of just Harold. So he is willing to sacrifice himself, just not others. Surprise the giant retard thug..is still kind of a retard even after he stopped being a thug.

I think it's pretty clear, after Rocks death, he went full "sunk cost" because FINALLY taking all of the warnings and red flags to heart would have meant he let is friend die AND ignored his proposed alliance with him for absolutely nothing and he simply could not accept it. So he deluded himself with that "this time things are going to be different" and here we are today. Now if he honest to god thought everything was going swimmingly or something in the back of his head was screaming "this is fishy", I don't think we'll ever have a clear answer.
And while I'm at it, again, I know we are in speed run mode, but my god am I really missing any sort of advisor for Harald, I can't believe that nobody ever raised doubts about this approach. Hell, Saul is another "non Elbaf giant", right? If there is such distrust for those, why the hell was he allowed to educate the kids?

Harald never pushed back before Ida. He was never a strong man. He was just a bully that attacked weak nations. Try that on someone of Roger's or Oden's level and count the seconds before you are gutted like a fish. If he had tried that shit on Wano back then when the samurai were running shit, they would have kicked his ass. Try that on Zou too. It is not distrust. 1) They have rules in place to not dilute Ancient Giant Blood further by having selective marriages between specific people and 2) they do not want a foreigner who did not grow up on Elbaf to have too much power over the kingdom. The average giant can marry whoever they want including humans and fish-men or whatever else. No one dislikes or distrusts Saul and Ida is only hated by Estrid's family.
