Say what you will, but the live action cast is so wholesome.

Except Emily Rudd. She's got some problems.

Oddly I think live action luffy doesn't really do the manga/anime mannerisms too well. I haven't seen this fucking thing outside season 1 back when it came out and i watched it with a fren, but one of my primary issues with it in series one was how muted everything was, how garp was just generic dour military guy instead of military guy who's got a really goofy side and is so blatantly THE guy that raised luffy, a number of other deaht note/bebop-netflix-isms but most of all the fucking Luffy guy being weirdly not quite fitting aside from kinda vaguely looking luffy ish due to the outfit wasn't really a good fit IMO. No clue if it's the direction or what but it's stiff and quiet in live action didney remake kinda way. I'm not expecting a constantly screeching anime dub luffy voice or anything unrealistic, I just want a guy to be able to have an energy about him that makes you go "yeah this dude really fucking loves adventure this dude LOVES pirates man". Like the wanted poster being framed more like a mrbeast thumbnail than a dude laughing and waving is one of the primary examples I have of the weirdness of netflix luffy.
From the characters to the setting too. Doesn't seem like season 2 did any of this better but a little worse where everything feels so drab and dull. It's one of the reasons why I personally said when this was first being shown off that a live action show won't do the series any justice. When the crew is just sailing on the ocean I swear it looks like it's gonna storm at any second which is a contrast to how in early One Piece there was a lot of life and color to the ocean and islands. Even when they got to Alabasta in the Live Action show it still looked dark despite how most of the time it was sunny.

I know people like how Buggy had the clown motif in the first season but he felt like a diet joker like he was a slight bit of a goofball like in the manga/anime but like Garp and a few other characters it's done in a cliffnotes way. Everyone's personality seems to be watered down so you get the gist of who they are because this show feels like an advertisement for the rest of the series in a literal way. This wouldn't be bad if people didn't again praise the characterizations like they're on par with the anime/manga but it's made abundantly clear certain characters are 'Netflix'd' to be more normiefied and consumable.

I actually appreciate some of the references to stuff Oda came up with later in the manga. Sanji referencing his cooking origin story or Brooks and Bink's Sake making an earlier appearance were decent additions.

Sabo showing up just so that the audience can soyjack was questionable.

Up Reverse Mountain we go. To the surprise of no-one the CGI is not great but having an actual ship does allow more practical acting from the cast which helps sell it. The best the CGI looks is at the top of the mountain, looking down at the meeting point of the uphill currents with clouds and terrain below.
No gum gum balloon, just Luffy steering the entire ship by stretching to grab hold of rocks at the side of the advance uphill.
"Hey whale, get out of the way."
Logo for this episode has a violin replacing the I in Piece and Laboon's scars worked into the word which is a nice touch.
Crocus has the usual problem of it not being possible to have someone that old and that terrifying but his indifference to the fate of the Straw Hats is pretty fun. As is switching on the gramarphone to ignore Luffy's shouting.
Laboon is tragically not inorganic inside but the crew working together to salvage parts to repair the ship with from the wrecks inside is a nice touch.
Oh boy, back to the Marines for Garp and the rookies to interact with Smoker and Tashigi. Coby's looking more like Harry Potter every season.
Luffy being related to Garp is presumably an open secret since Smoker knows it. I don't even know where to being with how stupid that is in the series normally, in the live action version it's vaguely acceptable but still dumb like most of the stuff with having Garp in this early
They have Smoker down to one cigar in the mouth at a time now which looks much better.
It's not the normal characterisation but Sanji taking every opportunity to torment Usopp about whatever he's currently afraid of is funny at times. Not least because it actually gives Usopp chance to have the cowardice characterisation.
Mr 9 ambushes Sanji and Usopp while they look for repair material and is down pretty quickly. Not an especially good fight scene, nor anything to write home about this take on the character.
Sigh. A vulva joke is not clever Netflix writers.
Vivi shows up for a brief fight scene concluded when the Straw Hats inside the stomach all end up back on the ship.
Crocus and Luffy continue to chat about Laboon, while Crocus whips up the latest batch of drugs for the whale in his kitchen.
Time for the Rumbar pirates flash back complete with Bink's Sake. It's an okay performance but the CGI ship looks terrible and whoever left the worst shot in of it should be shot. It's the old television Narnia series quality.
Brook doesn't look terrible but the actor's performance is only average. He gives decent laughter. I am not too bothered by this because we're never getting to Thriller Bark but it is a shame. Also I think they might have dodged ever giving his name in the episode which will confuse people.
The explanation around Laboon and Crocus is okay, covers the main points and demonstrates the situation both are in without belabouring it.
"Community theatre." That's a reference One Piece needed.
A brief interrogation confirms the identity of the Baroque works members they have captive at the same time as Garp is explaining it all to Smoker. Meanwhile Tashigi is eavesdropping on this because Marine security sucks balls. Also apparently she's meant to be a similar age to Coby and Helmeppo in this which is baffling given her rank.
Vivi's actress is another one that can't do whatever accent she is trying to. Zoro advocating for throwing them overboard while still inside the acid filled whale stomach is pretty good.
Laboon's movements see Usopp's repair efforts land him dangling above an acid bath as the others try to save him. Luffy tries to take on the whale who's shrugging off his drugs and despite punching him right in the eyeball fails to get a reaction.
Miss Wednesday helps save Usopp because of course the crew cannot do that without her.
Luffy does a terrible round of singing and Laboon inexplicably does not eat him. Rather than the original Luffy manages to talk down the whale and convince him to open his gob so the crew can sail out. It's not terrible but it's not especially interesting.
Rather than explain her dream about acquiring the swords to Zoro (and everyone else who listened) instead Tashigi shares it with Potter and Blond Weasley. If they keep this B plot going throughout this season I may keep this reference going.
Talking outside Crocus home the fully reunited Straw Hats are talking through the navigation woes along with the necessary Log Pose lore dump.
Laboon ends up painted up with the flag in a fairly brief scene and oh God back to Marines where Tashigi is literally sulking. Her decision t defy Smoker and come along with him was not too bad in the original but in this the relationship between the two of them really does not seem to fit him saying yes.
The journey continues with Whiskey Peak next on the list

Amazon Lily is gonna be shot like a softcore, mark my words.
Even if they get that far, I dread to see what they do with the island. Boa Hancock especially. You just know she'll be played by some ugly mystery meat while everyone worships her beauty somehow.

Best bet is they find some Asian with booba, either Korean or Japanese. Sounds like Oda has the final say in the casting so for sure he has some idea in mind.

Considering Nami's actress had to basically fight to wear a miniskirt, I don't think Oda has as much control over things like that than people believe.

Casting is different from costuming, which is likely going to happen with Boa for "practicality". Good on Nami's actor for wanting to stay loyal to the look, really. Wonder if that means there may be breast prosthetics later on lol. (Who knows.)
