sorry to be a broken record but why is that like 10x funnier than anything in recent videos? i'm genuinely trying to understand.

it's not that it's more sophisticated humor, it's literally chris doing a dumb impression of a youtuber i don't care about, saying "i put fings on me bum" but somehow it just feels so much funnier and unforced. for a while i thought "well i'm not enjoying the newer playthroughs because they ignore the game too much and just talk about random bullshit" but obviously they did that back in the day as well, and it was just funnier. idk

Chris had to try a lot harder to be funny with Dingdong the "straight" man (haha) and Julien the living laugh track, he was the only one that could be consistently funny.

Bear in mind though - it's a sweet gig. It's a great place for him to be in, and the hope is that it'll afford him the ability to crank out the goods even if bowlbo is never coming out
The longer you do any job that doesn't challenge you, the more you'll get bored and just go through the motions with it

I get it, trannyshit, but Signalis is genuinely a stellar game and experience. It's quite possibly the worst fucking thing to make a Let's Play of.
It's like making a Let's Play of Silent Hill 2. Which they did, except that's seemingly more watchable. Just feels like dudes shooting the shit over a game.

Man, Forspoken is absolutely fucking boring even with the boys. The open world sections where they're just killing random enemies are torture, it's been episode after episode of ranting and completely bonkers random scenarios because there was nothing more to talk about. As of now, the game picked up a little bit with more characters and dialogue(like Frey calling one of the bosses a "strong, independent woman we should all aspire to be. You go, girl!" to quite literally calling her a child killer and a sick fuck five minutes later when she meets her. Which is it Frey, is she a strong role model that you look up to or a sick freak, it can't be both!)

The early meme scenes aside, the game is just absolute slop. It gives off that "PS3 launch title" energy due to everything being brown and absolutely generic, a game that nobody has any expectations for because something better will come out in half a year or so and we need something to keep the day one console buyers playing...except this game didn't come out on PS5's launch and the console still doesn't have any killer-apps. Also it's the current year so it has niggers and strong womyn everywhere, not to mention so many bugs and 90GB content updates that just break more things(?)
Props to the boys for sticking with it, but jesus does this game suck. I think nu-Saints was unironically better since there was always some cringy bit of dialogue or a cutscene to make fun of and the action flowed smoother, Forspoken is just one long PS3 tech demo with an occasional quip from Frey or a lore dump absolutely nobody cares about since this game isn't getting a sequel.
 
The vibe with DD and Julien is just unmatched. I don't know what it was about them but they all brought out the funny in each other. The only thing that even comes close is Zach and Tomar.
I do think one of the problems lately is Chris being more checked out, either due to just being bored of the whole vidya commentary thing or his back problems. It can be hard to focus and perform with that much pain.

Man though, speaking of painful. Adam reading Alphys's dialogue is just great. They couldn't have picked a better character for him lol. "Just don't do the stuttering anymore"
 
DD&J had their moments, but ultimately they boil down to "DONGUS bitches about bad game design despite not being able to produce anything of his own and Jules talks about how much of a degenerate faggot he is". Their best series, to this day, is Kingdom Farts because both of them enjoy the game(s) in their own way and Chris provides a great outsider perspective as someone who wasn't an absolute autist about the series.

DD&J will never release any game of their own. Ever. They'll do the occasional stream where Dong talks about how much he wants to kill himself and how evil and homophobic their extremely small community they live in is, despite refusing to even attempt to become part of said community, and Jules will just be there. Existing on the sidelines.

Chris will continue churning out videos with occasional nuggets of gold when they aren't beating the dead horse that is Corey and his autistic counterparts and Zach stumbles on something he finds particularly funny.

And we'll never see anything related to bowlbo. It'll fade into obscurity because making cartoons for shitty meme bands like tenacious d and doing bit parts for smiling friends pays more than developing your own shitty platformer.

Fight me.
 
Personally I think Ding Dong and Chris humor boiled down to "silly Slavic voice + rhyming" with Julian laughing like the little brother in the background. It's stupid but it always got a laugh out of me.
That and nonsense words.
Edit: oh yeah and I miss when they'd do Chris Chan impressions all the time.

DD & Julian hit that "just having fun with friends and videogames vibe"
Zach/Lyle/Tomar feel a bit more "professional". Like they know that they have to be there and put up a show.

They are all great at it but both groups hit different vibes.

My favorite Ding Dong jokes are the little moments where he lets his unabashed seething autism about things midwits do show. In Ep 4 of Kingdom Hearts he mocks retards who think eyes see in frames per second. A simple "the human eye, when you're an infant, or stupid, can only see 20 fps.", with a complete done with everything deadpan tone, can bring a smile out of anyone.

DD bitches about more than just games while explicitly saying he plays a lot of it up to be funny, and conversely Chris was very obnoxious about game design in a lot of playthroughs, especially anything Crash Bandicoot related. It's more than that even if in broad strokes that's what a lot of the non-funny moments are like, I just like that specific aspect of the show and don't mind making fun of it when Ding Ding gets a bit too autistic.

Also, I don't know what you're talking about. Julian doesn't bring up his perversions unless asked.

Everyone involved had a funnier laugh and seemed like 3 depressed people with difficult lives who gathered together to play games, and they didn't know eachother that much. I think the moment you grab Newgrounds people its all coming apart, everyone important there have known eachother for decades now. They were allowed to make more genuine, funny, mostly uncensored edgy humor, and didn't have to be constantly policing themselves for it. And also they were just in a way more eccentric and highbrow than coomer autists like Spazkid.

Unpopular as fuck opinion: the Zach, Tomar and Lyle era is far better than the DD&J one, though I'll admit it depends on what you're looking for. For coziness I can see the appeal of the latter but for actual laughs the former is so incredibly much better.

You reminded me to watch this again, also completely forgot that vivzy and jaxxy (pre burning of tomar's spagetaye) was in this.
 
In a way I liked the Ding Dong/Julian era more because them and Chris was consistently a good group. I dislike Lyle and Adam, so I usually just skip their episodes, and Cory is only tolerable in small doses. It's pretty rare these days to get the golden trio of Chris/Zack/Tomar.
 
On the subject of SOVL, this. Also, I think there should be a discussion on videos that work as background noise vs videos that are fun to watch. Sometimes I like playing a multiple hour-long complete series on the TV and semi-watch it as I do other stuff.

For me, I put Adam in the same category as Cory. Can be really entertaining when partnered with people who can either trad wrangle them or set them up to be at their most unhinged. They are both vapid degenerate retards which has limited appeal, but can be funny. I don't think the DD/Julian era was as good as people remember but I do think it avoided ever being "bad" mostly moderately good (occasionally great) with dips into moderately uninteresting.
