Dude, I really hope people learn to, one day, let Smiling Friends live as a singular entity rather than constantly bringing up Oneyplays alongside it
It's so fucking weird too seeing that Chris, Zach, et all are best known for their pants shitting letsplays too lol.

I always see him brought up as "the OneyPlays guys."

I don't think anyone on here talked about it, but I think the whiplash vids are some of the best ever made on the channel. I urge you at least to watch this one joke from Zach at 14:19 that made me lightheaded with laughter. It comes completely out of left field.
Also, a recurring bit I like throughout the episodes is how whenever Chris bothers to pay attention to the game he complains about how shit it is and berates Lyle for wanting to play it.

It seems pretty obvious that Smiling Friends was supposed to debut sometime in October, since we got a Halloween and a Christmas episode. Because of delays and the fact that both holidays passed, they probably thought it made sense to just air the entire season.

It was delayed, yet it’s likely that the season-dump was due to the media lawyers thing. The plan they had was to put episodes up next day on HBO Max after it aired weekly, per a few video descriptions that popped up right before it aired. Apparently they had a few contracts that prevented that schedule, so they just went with “let’s get the series on HBO Max as fast as we can”, as in a month from the season finale.

It must burn ACK to know the only reason they've gained any notable recognition past their shellacking upon release is due to being mocked on an LP series. If this fucker's voice lines aren't him screaming bloody murder off-key over and over then they've failed miserably.

I guess I'm out of the loop as I legit never even heard of YIIK until Oney played it. Now I see it get brought up everywhere.
It seemed to be a thing to point and laugh at shortly after it came out in 2019. Youtubers sort of kept it alive by regurgitating each others opinions on it, but then in 2020 we got a fucking baller ass review of it by Running Shine, then it just kinda died off, only for Oneyplays to bring it right back into relevancy. I think people have a more light-hearted ironic love for it these days

Ok, so this is where we discuss Smiling Friends. For some reason.

Watched all the episodes the other day and I must say it's pretty good.

I lost faith in animation for adults a long time ago, because everything just wants to be the next Family Guy it seems.
Focus group-optimized, soulless bullshit. I once tried to watch an episode of Big Mouth, but ended up just wanting to go Elvis Presley six-shooter on my TV-set.

Smiling Friends:
The episode plots aren't terribly interesting or original, they're more like frameworks made to accommodate smaller, incredibly funny pieces of situational comedy (or just weird shit). The 11-minute format seems just right. Anything longer would probably not work as well because of the intensely surreal nature of the show.

For me, the show works mainly because of the individual jokes and the weirdness going on in the background. The dinner scene in the pilot is absolutely brilliant and one of the highlights of the show thus far.

Characters are overall good. The only one I don't care for is Mr. Boss, who is too over-the-top fucked up. He has a forced hey-look-what-a-crazy-character-we-can-write kind of feel to him.
Alan is more interesting than Boss and should have gotten more screen time.

You should check out Sick Animation

Eh, I really didn't find the show all that good honestly. For me it had way more misses than hits, frankly, it felt like early 2000 Newgrounds/Internet humor that these guys never grew out of.

I'm feeling that. I watch Oneyplays religiously, the best episodes include Zach but he's really only funny in the shortest of bursts. The Hellbenders pilot was 10x funnier than this entire series. But who gives a fuck, the boys are getting paid and that's all that matters.
