I personally think the games are kinda overrated in that they've got pretty good gameplay but all details of the plot and world leave your head after playing it. But I just downloaded the 3DS remake of Superstar Saga and I was immediately reminded of how, I guess in homage to Super Mario RPG, the 3DS ones have to have the ugliest art style in human history. Haven't played the rest but Superstar Saga has a really satisfying progression that dodges all of the typical JRPG tropes. You can tell that a lot of the staff were ex-Square.
Characters aren't stupid and don't do stupid dangerous shit with the main McGuffin or the princess. There's always a good plot reason to be where you are and even when you go somewhere just to lose to the villains you're always setting up other side victories that help turn things in your favor. Fighting the main villain permanently wounds her each time until she's just an angry spirit as the final boss.
