Online games on the Wii (and DS)

The Wii really lagged behind the PS3 and especially the 360 with online games. The only one I can remember working well was MarioKart Wii. Smash Brawl was extremely laggy, the sports games were generally laggy, COD worked but was inferior to the other console versions, and I never played Animal Crossing online. Did anyone else have any experience with the Wii online? What were some good online games, and what were they like? This is not a Q&A thread, I wanted to start a general thread to discuss this topic. Ironically, it felt like the DS had better online gameplay.

Remember the little dongle Nintendo sold that helped your Wii connect to the internet? Mine didn't work very well. I tried playing Brawl online but it was too much of a chore. Mario Kart DS was a blast to play online though. Animal Crossing Wild World was fun too, but only because I already had people to play with. And I ended up putting a lot of hours into Metroid Prime Hunters.

Literally the only online experience I had with Nintendo's Wi-Fi was Mario Kart Wii. Of course, I've played matchmaking titles like CoD on the 360. Something about Mario Kart Wii's online felt innocent and personal.

You'd find a match, Mario Kart Wii would have a globe in the background with your location and others, you'd watch the race in progress live, then get to the voting screen. Don't forget the menu music.

I only really played Smash Bros Brawl online, it was very bad. HOWEVER the real fun was all the flash games you could play on the internet browser. Anything that only used a mouse was fair game: Bowman 2, Nanaca Crash, Cursor Thief, Dice Wars, there were so many and it felt unreal that there was an unending amount of games I could ever want to play as a kid. That was a special kind of fun exclusive to such a relatively small window of time and I'm glad to have seen it.
Oh yeah I also played Legend of Zelda Phantom Hour Glass online with a DSi, that worked fairly well while it lasted. It was some sort of dungeon where you either played as Link or a haunted suit of armor, forgot how it played.

DS had great online, Mario Kart and Yu-Gi-Oh were my favorites but Metroid Prime was impressive.

Never had a Wii. I didn't even have a 360 or PS3. I was too poor for games back then. I was still in my 20's when all that shit came out. I was thinking about buying a used Wii because I heard they are backwards compatible with GC games. But I decided against it after hearing they don't even have HDMI.

I have a 3DSXL I bought back in 2017 or 2018. I bought a used copy of Mario Kart from Lukie Games and played a multiplayer match with some people before Nintendo killed the online support for it. I also played a multiplayer match of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch before Nintendo went shekel grubbing Kike and decided to start charging for online access with the Switch. Both experiences were ok.

Mine never worked for my DS no matter what I did. The wii worked a bit better, but I quickly lost interest as I, a newfag player, didn't get why everyone was Funky Kong when I was Toad, and I kept disconnecting so I gave up. I remember the fun time I had when it did work.

the wife and me considered getting into Dragon Quest The Online One for the DS but we already pissed away a lot of time into WoW and Diablos so we figured it was probably a bad idea
did get the tarot deck from it because happy dq monsters and the major arcana is a fun mix

pretendo network is a good solution to the shutdowns.
I know some of the old pokemon games on DS can do it with a DNS change but I never tried it.
That said I miss the 3DS era of pokemon. it's bullshit I can't play gen 6 or 7 online anymore.
I couldn't get the stupid DSi or DSlite to go online at all, just the 3DS.
