Honestly the only way the marriage would've ever worked is if he was just as attached to it as her (which is to say not at all) and just wanted to maintain it to in order to expedite the immigration process. He got way too emotionally invested in someone who seems to have barely made any real effort to return any sort of love like that. The whole situation would've still been ridiculous to most people but that's the only way I can see him coming out of the whole ordeal not mentally broken.

Great OP. Very succinct. I kinda feel bad for the guy, although he made a lot of bad decisions in sequence that then come up to bite him in the ass.
