I can publicly call my head of government a bumbling incompetent who's wrong re: everything and donate to causes that go directly against his parties' direction and I will not go to prison for 15 years over it) which countries like Russia don't even attempt to pretend anymore. Yes, you could reduce that to me rather having the NSA in the kernel than Putin. If I had to choose, I do. And as I said, yes, that's bleak, but the alternative would be worse. To put it in the words of the kids nowadays: Simping for a russian dictator isn't based, even if he hates trannies. As much as you might hate the system, it simply isn't the way. Ohio. (?)
It used to be like that in early 2000. When people were united to oppose War on Terror era mass surveillance. And countries, politicians still followed the letter of law. I would have agreed with you that Western world is way better than Russia.

Now Western countries like France don't pretend anymore to be democratic. See what happened to Telegram in August. The CEO ran from Russia to escape political persecution, but France has still managed to act the same way as Russia.

Western world tried to push agendas, gaslight population, censor people, press, de-bank people, the same way as USSR/Russia/China does.
Yes, you will not be killed, tortured in Western world, that's a good thing, but they still apply the same tactics of Soviet Union/COINTELPRO when it comes to suppression of truth.

I actually use from time to time Yandex web search. I am aware that they are backed by FSB, they can artificially promote Pro-Russian talking points, but I can find uncensored results regarding political scandals, piracy, leaks, personal blogs.

Even if I still consider Quality of Life and freedom in Western world way better than all BRICS, I can't deny Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden used/uses Russia to get away from US persecution or that people that discovered wrongdoings have been helped by BRICS. I agree it is stupid to simp for Russia, but I consider stupid to simp for the current Western order when they treat me like dirt because I am "privileged".

Same can be said about whistleblowers in China/Russia. They use the help of Western Organizations to make wrong-doings public.

That's Linus for you. I wrote in an earlier post that people say Linus is "cucked" now because he doesn't flame contributors anymore for retarded shit to the degree he used to, but the truth is sometimes the most known of these flamings were very justified but also sometimes they really weren't and he was just a really toxic person (in the true meaning of the word) to people who simply didn't deserve that kind of vitrol so it's actually good he toned down somewhat. He's just not the nicest guy. Some people just love people "that say it how it is" until they're the target, then it's suddenly a lot less cool.
I think any sort of treatment like that in a professional space is unethical. Also the introduction of politics in this space has grave consequences.

Linux is actually cucked because he introduced CoC at the request of his daughter who is a SJW activist. He is just a hypocrite that follows power. If the sudden US leadership becomes a theocracy, Linus will become religious at face value.

The whole "well he's Finnish so of course he hates Russians" is the weirdest fucking meme. No peoples are a monolith. Historical national memes, faded relics of propaganda. Nevermind that Linus is a fully Americanized globohomo. He sits within the cathedral, an NGO living off big-corpo-gov money. Going a step further he invokes the purest of midwit rhetoric, "Russian trollfarms", Jesus Christ. None of this has anything to do with him being born in Finland.

Nerds with power are the worst.
It would not be a lie to claim that his ego has swollen with the codebase of the kernel. He gets a pass from me because he's often right and did and does police the kernel from a lot of retardation/bad actors.

Telegram in August
I think in cases like that it's always been like this and never different. You heard of telegram because apparently it avoided the backdoors for a long time, while other services just silently agree to any and every demand. Think the various three letter organizations don't at least try to press hidden guns to the ribs of the bigger tech corps at all times? I doubt that ever was different. I think the one thing that really changed in current times is that corporations got more powerful in a way where they manage to fight back somewhat at times and don't always immediately play ball. Can't say I trust the corporations more than the governments. Why people insist to do their communication on proprietary, centralized platforms to do anything from talking about cooking to planning terrorist attacks will forever escape me.

But in general yes, life isn't fair, politics are sleazy and there's a lot of injustice happening in western countries. I don't disagree. In a perfect world I want the government out of my business and my hardware fully free and open source. That's not the world we live in and if one side has to win, I prefer that side to be mine, the one where there's at least a degree of accountability.

Linux is actually cucked
Ehh, I'm not sure. He's a pragmatist. I didn't see that whole thing in the frame of the eternal culture war like many did, but in the frame of how he behaved in the last few decades. Dude was kind of a dick, having people demand of him to mellow down did not really come as suprise to me, nor did my mind first go to ulterior motives, really. That the usual suspects would use the situation to do a little culture war and plant some flags on some hills doesn't really surprise me either, though. I wouldn't really put him on anyone's side either, though.

I'm sure a Stallmanite will pop up soon enough to explain that cleanliness is unethical due to the use of proprietary sanitary products, and begin advocating for Free Toiletries.
You can make your own, freely, and just like a lot of free software the process will be needlessly complex and time consuming, but you'll be reminded of how much better you are than everyone else as you feel the burning from the left over unbuffered lye in your soap when you wash your hands every six months.

If Linus is so very worked up about what happened in WW2 and how bad the Russkies were to Finland,
then mayby Linus should appologize for the Finns for teaming up with Team-Germany.

Or, he could stop being a pussy and just let the past be the past.
I don't think he really cares all that much about what happened that long ago. Most finns I knew don't. I think it is just some weird excuse he used to try to avoid having to explain himself and divert attention away from the current vent.
"Look, stop talking about this, don't you remember what Russia did to Finland in WW2, stop talking about Russia you hurt my feelings."

Well, that's one take. Edward Snowden's story makes zero sense. I believed it for years too. But a while back I really thought about it: A man with a six figure income working remotely as an NSA contractor, who previously worked for the CIA, living in Hawaii with his smoking hot girlfriend, suddenly decides one day he has a moral compass, somehow takes 2 (or more) laptops and fills them with classified data (from where/how? over the corporate NSA VPN? In person?) hands them to some journalists for Der Spiegel / Greenwald in South East Asia, and then checks out to Moscow where he's apparently living to this day, and his smoking hot girlfriend gets to join him and he's not imprisoned in an Ecuadorian embassy or suicided by now.

On top of that, all his "evidence" makes the 9/11 truth movement looks like 100% indisputable fact. Shitty slides, PDFs with all the important parts (actual hardware name and vendor/manufacturer information) completely redacted.

The Intercept, the news org founded due to this story, has an insane track record of nearly ever major whistle blower who comes to them getting arrested and thrown in prison:
https://wikispooks.com/wiki/The_Intercept / https://archive.is/0XUBk

I really think Snowden has always worked for either the CIA or State Department. He's a US asset:
https://digwithin.net/2014/01/01/snowden/ https://archive.is/sXwDk

The United States and most of the European Union is like Huxley's Brave new World while Russian, North Korea and others are much more 1984. When you really start to look under the surface, the Snowden story is so weird. If you look at it as a "Limited Hangout," either Russia and the US are playing this story together, or Russia knows it's BS and is holding it in its back pocket.

The US is not a good actor by a long shot. The fact that so much FOSS is maintained by organizations, even non-profits, that now have to bend to the will of international sanctions show more tears in that original philosophy of making good software for the world for everyone.

Edward Snowden's story makes zero sense.
Wikileaks started off as an auction site for leaked corporate emails. Then Assange realized he could get more fame, money and pussy going after the Bush administration.
NSA contacted Linus Torvalds to introduce deliberate backdoors into the kernel. This has been confirmed by his father.
Back in 2021 three "researchers" from the University of Minnesota were caught red-handed pushing malicious kernel patches.

EDIT:

Actual, verifiable damage and yet this day UMN is not banned. UMN is banned but all Minnesotans are not, unlike Russians.

OK that is good news. My fault for believing the tard Google "AI" summary

Probably would've been better to say that not all Minnesotans have been banned, unlike Russians.

Electrospaces has done a pretty good deconstruction of the mythology surrounding Snowden. The book review is probably the best place to start.

- On the 10th anniversary of the Snowden revelations
- Edward Snowden and the targeted drone killing campaign
- NSA documents and cover names from the book Dark Mirror
- Edward Snowden and the STELLARWIND report
- Review of Snowden's book Permanent Record - Part II: At the NSA
- Review of Snowden's book Permanent Record - Part I: At the CIA
- The Snowden files: where are they and where should they end up?
- Snowden would not have been able to legally "wiretap anyone"
- Snowden-documents show no evidence for global mass surveillance

Neither is Japan.

Tell me how many Japanese FOSS projects there are.

Some parts of the world isn’t ready for FOSS.

Shoot, it’s a miracle that Blender got adopted by Japanese studios to begin with. (Thanks Anno.)

Every time you see something japanese in FOSS (be it a japanese readme of a project or sth. else) the origin is just some troon with a tranime/japan fetish. Same as when an incredibly technical and autistic commit has been done by a "Sarah" "Lana" or "Charlotte". You just immediately know what's up. I think the japs are mostly into mobile devices and games consoles, which aren't exactly a FOSS breeding ground.

How many true and honest women are there actually? I'm sure there has to be some, but I would not know from the top of the head. Tbh, if I was a woman in FOSS, I'd probably hide behind a male name. I'd be too worried of trannies creeping on me and trying to have girl talks and me having no real recourse to it without being burned at the stake of public opinion. Can thank the troons for that little piece of inclusive- and progressiveness. There's nobody more misogynist than your average troon.

With Japanese work culture as a whole, FOSS isn’t really popular. Zero profit incentives, zero point in existing.

There is the idea of the Doujinsoft but that is largely different and because of the way Japanese copyright works, Japan is a pretty bad place to work in IT with.

Aside from that, it is very very rare for FOSS or anything open source coming out of Japan. Japan has a really terrible culture of not archiving things properly or having lackluster archiving when it comes to software. Companies are God and they have the say if the plebs get to enjoy the fruit or not.

Still do find it hilarious that people assume FOSS is huge here though.
