ESR is that weird kid in school that claimed his father was special forces/CIA and last summer holiday, he went on a mission with him. He'd also have a girlfriend in another school. It's been a while but I remember the guy claiming being some martial arts specialist. Real "my hands are registered as deadly weapons" shit, amongst other things. Dude has cerebral palsy, that's why he looks so weird. His actual contributions to OSS are tenous at best and like, 200 years ago. Dude was a grifter before that really was so commonplace in this world. If he was younger, he'd just be another bullshit youtube attention whore. I just cannot take him seriously, no matter what he says. He could claim the sky is blue and I'd go double check. He's definitively a lolcow and if somebody would go digging, he could probably find a lot of stuff the kids today would consider "cringe".

sex guide
Those whose minds are corrupted by programming autism don't have the natural instincts for normal human actions. Their life has become a program. They need instructions to have sex and think writing documentation on it is doing a service for their fellows (or it's bragging that they had sex).

he seems to have done a fair amount of shilling back in the early 2000s that helped "open source" and i think he might have helped start an important organization or something but yeah his contributions are tenuous and he's not very important now
and he's certainly not on the same level as good old St. iGNUcius "I BLESS YOUR COMPUTER, MY CHILD" of the Church of Emacs

He seems to have done a fair amount of shilling back in the early 2000s that helped "open source"
I think his main contributions was that he did write some hugely influential posts/essays when FreeSoftware/OpenSource/GPL/Linux started taking off and he probably shaped quite a bit of the discussion and thoughts around open source at the time.

I think that was really important and it helped migrating from the previous state "public domain software written by hippies and students" to become a much more accepted form of software and also model for collaborative software development. Accepted by companies and corporations as a valid way to see software and also identifying the need to define the legislative framework that this software belong in.

Before this all free software was basically "I declare this public domain" with a lotof uncertainty of what that actually meant when it came to use and liabilities.

His actual software development skills, I don't think there is much. He worked on fetchmail in the mid 90s but back then mail-transfer-agents were not really something that were in short supply. Everyone and his sister had their own sendmail enhancement or replacement. My university and computer-club included. So, did he produce any code of notability? No, probably not. If fetchmail had never existed it would not had any impact on the world.

But his thoughts and essays did form an steer the direction of open source at a critical time during the birth of the movement and for that he deserves recognition.
He is still a sped though. And has balls of steel for publishing that tweet.

ESR's other claim to fame is that he published some leaked documents from Microsoft in the late 90's that went over their response to Linux and how they were going to combat it in the server space.

Is this why we like free software at the Kiwifarms?
yes kill red hat mit licensing "work for free for big corpos" shills
oh wait it's even worse i looked closely and he's ACTUALLY DEFENDING ACTUAL PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE
now it's ok to use proprietary software, but you really should avoid it if at all possible
the only thing worse than an open source cuck is somebody who thinks advocating for the eventual eradication of proprietary software (which is next to impossible, but a man can dream) and the harms it perpetuates against users is somehow white supremacy

anyway this makes me want to say ALL HAIL THE TRUE PROPHET GNU/HAMMAD OF M-x eslam
emacslamic content.webp TOTAL RED HAT ZIONIST DEATH. PURGE ALL PROPRIETARY INFIDELS emacslamic content.webp

Two questions.
1, is he saying that all redhat customers are white-supremacy enjoyers? Nothing wrong with that. There is a lot of fatigue to go around.

2, if you buy a support contract with redhat and if you have criticial issue you need urgent help with, instead of talking to an engineer you can talk to this guy and listen to his manifest of "we was kangz" and "wipo suxx"?

i suspect he got laughed at once by a based gnu/jihadist for being a proud discord slave and is now malding in the only way a whiny redhat faggot knows how: by calling it white supremacy

it's quite possible that he has an account here with at least 8,000 posts
THE OPEN SOURCE IS COMING FROM WITHIN THE HOUSE!!!!

Also, for all the dumb cringe shit he does, nothing will top him trying to puff up his chest for having giflib embedded on just about anything and everything like it was some kind of accomplishment... because when you dig down you realize he literally just took an existing library of GIF-handling procedures written for MSDOS and ported them to POSIX. Oh, wait, then there's him basing his career on the lessons learned while writing fetchmail... except he more or less inherited that from popmail, and it was riddled with bugs that he refused to fix so he could get out an updated version before publication of The Cathedral and the Bazaar.

His legacy won't be the outlandish shit he says. It'll be the fact that he's a wannabe who managed to rope a bunch of corpos into funding free software, but still wants to be seen as the great hacker that he isn't. That's his legacy.

while he's certainly no rms and definitely no torvalds, he has had more influence on the free software (and open source lol) world than most rust troons ever will
i can't hate the man; he's just not really that notable except for that one big act of public relations he did in the early 2000s or whatever
and don't dismiss the humble art of convincing people with fuckloads of money how incredibly effective it is to share your source code instead of everybody trying to charge each other $6,000/seat for basic-ass shit
we've gotten a few nifty things here and there and some entire industries have switched (and more are switching) to having 1 big software system that everybody works on instead of 20 incompatible vendor-locked pieces of shit because it's genuinely better
a lot of the time this even results in genuinely amazing free software with no strings attached
i think raymond probably helped at least a bit with all that

there are tons of better poser retards in open source to laugh at than old washed-up raymond though. useless nocoder red hat employees get hated a ton in this thread but we all know they deserve a lot more. tons of people with all of esr's flaws and absolutely none of the potential redeeming qualities
