Notepad++ v7.8.1 : Free Uyghur
2019-10-29

freeUyghur.png

Human rights in China is always a hotly contested topic. Since 2017, numerous reports have emerged of the Uyghur people being detained in extrajudicial “re-education camps”, subjected to political indoctrination, and sometimes even torture. 2018 estimates place the number of detainees in the hundreds of thousands.

The Uyghurs are not ethnically Chinese but live in China’s so-called autonomous Xinjiang region. The region’s name suggests the Uyghurs have autonomy and self-governance. But similarly to Tibet, Xinjiang is a tightly controlled region of China. After the recent Xinjiang conflict, Beijing has recast the Uyghur ethnic group as a terrorist collective. This has allowed Beijing to justify its transformation of Xinjiang into a surveillance state. There has also been a marked rise of Islamophobia across China.

At least 120,000 members of Kashgar’s Muslim Uyghur minority have been detained in Xinjiang’s re-education camps which aim to change the political thinking of detainees, their identities, and their religious beliefs. Reports from the World Uyghur Congress submitted to the United Nations in July 2018 suggest that 1 million Uyghurs are currently being held in the re-education camps.

Here are some actions you can take to help them:

The fact you have just learned such information is already an action in and of itself. But you can involve more people to focus on this issue and hopefully apply additional pressure on the Chinese government to stop their oppressive actions and crimes concerning the Uyghur people.

People will tell me again to not mix politics with software/business. Doing so surely impacts the popularity of Notepad++: talking about politics is exactly what software and commercial companies generally try to avoid. The problem is, if we don’t deal with politics, politics will deal with us. We can choose to not act when people are being oppressed, but when it’s our turn to be oppressed, it will be too late and there will be no one for us. You don’t need to be Uyghur or a Muslim to act, you need only to be a human and have empathy for our fellow humans.

Hence Notepad++ Free Uyghur Edition:

Politics don't belong in software, why is that such a hard concept to grasp?

Because software is an easy and very effective way to distribute your political ideas hence why developers want to put their politics in. There are probably millions of Notepad++ users and a good fraction of them will update without realizing and now the creator gets his message across.

Now I think inserting politics is a bad move if your goal is widespread usage but that's only one goal people have with software

wanna help kids in Uganda?

I read somewhere that open source and Unix / Linux usage is vastly more popular in Africa since a lot of people can't afford OS licenses even at steep discounts.

https://www.wired.com/2000/09/africa-the-linux-continent/ here's an old article I found

It would be funny seeing a bunch of Ugandan kids using vim and scoffing at the sublime and Visual Studio users.
I thought they just pirated windows. Also how the fuck are you supposed to install shit from software repositories with no internet? Must be compiler masters.

I'm talking about places that do have internet and electricity where most people have cell phones and maybe decade old laptops or really cheap notebooks. Yeah you can pirate Windows but if your computer doesn't come with Windows it's actually less of a hassle to install linux. Also Debian or even more lightweight distros will work on ancient Pentium IIs while (modern) Windows and MacOS won't.

There's Internet even in Somalia. One of the few sectors of the economy that functions is wireless providers and electronics in general.

I don't know if you're talking about notepad++ but China is such a shithole in terms of human rights and freedoms that calling them out isn't even controversial in the West. The only groups willing to defend them are companies that don't want to lose access to the Chinese market and the brainwashed masses that live there. Nothing of value is lost by pissing them off, it's free milk that's also very easy to bait.

You're thinking about India, where they pirate Windows (and Oracle DB). Superpower 2020!

Also, expecting sense from the creator of NP++ is unreasonable. This is the guy who took the plugin manager that was an absolutely essential convenience of the program out of the installer because when you opened it up, it displayed a teeny tiny logo for the company gracefully providing free hosting to all the plugin files.

I can see it both ways really, while it's true China is a shithole and criticism of it isn't very controversial, inserting one's pet politics into projects like this is going to get really gay real fast if it continues.

With that in mind, let me be the first to announce Youtube-Dl version 2019.11.03; Free Palestine Edition

Yep. Africa has the internet. I don't know why this shocks people. WhatsApp is fucking huge there.

Though in most African countries the power grid doesn't work quite right so it's mostly smartphones/laptops that they use, not desktops.

Muslims crying about Chinese human rights is like the kid with one leg making fun of the kid with one arm.

Keep in mind that Muslim communities on the western edges of Chinese territory are just descendants of failed Jihadi invasions at various points in history. So don't have too much sympathy.

I don't understand the complaint, the Chinese in the rest of China live in a surveillance state without autonomy and self-governance too.

tee hee, me make joke, me go pee pee in your code

A github user called "Antifa" has started a takeover of the Zeronet project and polluting the code with a few PRs of his own and then opening licensing disputes over them. He also registered a few domains with the zeronet name attached to it and started shitposting on the zeronet issues and reddit about it.

It is no secret that Zeronet causes a great deal of discomfiture with the left-leaning tech community due to it's uncensorable and DoS resistant nature (8ch has an offshoot on it as well). This may be the beginning of a new wave of trannies removing projects of "inconvenient technology" from public access, i dunno.

But cant people just fork it from an older source code and call it Nullnet?
