The funny thing is that a succinct but defintive "lolno" is usually all it takes to stop these jokers in their tracks. They might stamp their feet a bit and linger around bitching and moaning in twitter or some github issue tracker, but they can't really do anything. The damage is always done if people try to appease these idiots or let them into their projects or companies.

All of these people are just seeking to gain power and recognition for themselves anyways. They can't via talent, skill or knowledge so they do it this way. Did you ever hear of anyone who was extraordinarily skilled or does something really useful that is hard to replace and who also subscribes to this whole woke culture coolaid? Someone who didn't get into his position by crybullying or general social engineering but by merit? Yeah, me neither. People like that have always existed, what didn't always exist was the oppertunity for them to gang up and coordinate in online mobs near-instantly. If people would be able to stay away from that little instant gratification to their vanity that is Twitter and other social media, they'd make themselves a lot less attackable. There's no point in trying to fight these people in that environment. It's all they have. They'll just pull you down to their level and drown you by sheer numbers. If people would learn to never give these no-life, no-talent hacks even an inch, then FOSS wouldn't be the shitshow it has become.

Well yes and no, I thought a bit about it and can also think of a few people. These have to exist else it wouldn't have grown to the dimensions it has, but yes, my point still stands, as long as you don't open the floodgates for them you usually don't have to fear them. Take that whole recent GIMP thing as an example, and imagine the shitshow it would've been if the developers caved. There's no upside to it.

Glimpse is gonna blow Gimp outta the water

And MSFT spent $7.5 billion to "apocalypse-proof" GitHub source code by storing it in a special arctic repository. Absolute exceptionalism. The article doesn't really mention climate change, remarkably enough, but I can only imagine that this was done because people were being histrionic about climate change and to score points with people who are histrionic about climate change.
They bought Github for 7.5 billion, they didn't fund the dumb microfilm project for that much. Based on the resources provided by that third party, this is a six digit pet project that gets microsoft a little publicity. Overall, it's a nothingburger. Microsoft spent 100 times that amount to iterate on skype for business (lync) and make it worse in every way, so I'm confident that this won't even make a top ten list for dumbest things Microsoft has funded this year.

Dude I fucking hate how this leftist bullshit has infected the open source, and hacking communities.
like look at the type of shit you find sprinkled into hacking conference talks.
Granted this is a German conference, but there's plenty of it in Defcon and Blackhat talks as well. Just look for a women in the thumbnail.

They encourage these 88 iq women to give non tech related talks, for inclusivity purposes.
Guys we're just not being inclusive enough, that's why negroids and women aren't getting CS degrees.
Then when they get the opportunity to give talks, it's always technology tangential, they're never directly reverse engineering machine code, or designing a circuit board.

There are a couple exceptions, Jeri Ellsworth is one.
She programmed an FPGA to hardware emulate a commodore 64 then sold it as a plug and play console.

A little off topic but god damn have they ever. I've been using Skype Home to help some family with tech problems recently, and the problem is they have Skype Business. So for one thing, no screen share, though for whatever reason webcams are still an option. Debugging problems in stats programs is pretty fucking frustrating when you can't see the program or the output, and it's 50/50 the person you're talking to has just made a syntax error somewhere.

Also I've noticed that if you edit messages the result will sometimes be converted to the unescaped html source. There's probably an exploit in there somewhere.

Holy shit dude, from plastic bottles turning the abbos gay to "surviving in an increasingly queer world", this women has absolutely nothing intelligent or relevant to say, however approximately every third word is comedy gold, so I forgive her.

Depending on the version, you can just crash you coworkers skype clients at will by messaging them certain formatted text carrying metadata. I've done this on accident more than once. I think the specific trick is the have the sender send some message with formatting tags in utf-8 that contains non ascii chars in some linux/mac encoder, that then gets decoded by windows-125x, instantly crashing the client on receipt. Lync is hot garbage.

Staying on topic and actually contributing: Monica Cellio is now a verboten topic among StackExchange staff, on the advice of their legal team: https://meta.stackexchange.com/ques...ng-links-and-community-ads-about-legal-issues

They delete any topic mentioning Monica now as soon as they pop up, but half the fucking mods of SE still have "reinstate monica" in their name. The shitshow never ends.

Look deeper into her. She was paid for the development of the C=One and stole the paid work she made for the DTV later on while never finishing her involvement on the former, almost destroying that company and slandering the owner in the process. Every detail of that little sordid story was scrubbed from the internet or fell off it because of how long ago that was. If she wasn't a woman, she'd probably not have gotten away with it as well as she did. She's one of these women that like to scream sexism when things don't go her way or to cover up for shit like that. The only difference is that she has actually some skill to back herself up and isn't dependent on beta orbiters carrying her.

As long as women aren't treated equally, which means getting called out for bad shit they do as people do, I'll always be careful with them in these strongly objective merit-related fields that depend on people calling out shit work to ensure quality standards. All these shitty quotas and special rules for women pretty much make sure they'll never be treated equally or will be on equal footing as men because it allows some women into positions they're simply not good enough for, damaging the reputations of actually skilled women in the process by relating to them.

If people could get their heads out of their asses and understand that women and men are not created equally, it'd allow the few women that actually are good in these fields to get the respect and jobs they deserve, without being second-guessed all the time because of all the skilless diversity consultants that stink tech and hard sciences up.

TigerConnect has the exact same fucking bug. One of the physicians here really likes texting in Hindi and it's just a crapshoot whether or not he crashes everyone out.

It's 2019 I thought people understood Unicode now.

I was temped to say CCC has always been like that but looking through the archives it seems that the hippy-dippy "art" and "society" tracks only started after 2014 or so.

Nothing has fallen further than 2600 and their HOPE conference though.
The 12th Hope conference (2018) was quite a shtshow incase you missed it.

You can get an idea of how untechnical and irrelevant or just plain hypocritical many of the talks are just by looking at the titles.

This one stands out for me, Online Monitoring of the Alt-Right
The presenters created a machine learning tool to track and censor minority groups on social media based on language and insignia. Since the 90s, 2600 has always been about resisting surveillance and censorship and totalitarianism but they host a talk that goes against all these values just because the targets are on the wrong side of the political spectrum.

The Manning and Barret Brown talks are exactly the shallow pointless hero worshiping you expect.

One actually good talk is How Your Personal Information is Obtained and Exploited to Manipulate Your Emotions, Your Actions, and Your Vote
It's pretty long but at the end he goes on a rant about how politicized HOPE and 2600 has become and how far they've strayed from the hacker philosophy and they literally turn off the lights and push him off the stage mid sentence.

There was also some drama on the conference floor.
Basically a guy turned up in a MAGA hat and did a bit of trolling. From what I gather he just stood around and only responded when people engaged him. It was mostly just his hat that upset people. Apparently he also blocked an aisle after a talk and when people told him to move he said they were fatshaming him, which is frankly just hilarious.

More tragically an unrelated guy also turned up with a MAGA hat but he seemed to be a genuine conference goer suffering from a bit of autism. You can hear him ask a question at the end of the Trolling the Trolls and the Trolls That Troll Them talk. You can see both presenters butt clench simultaneous when they see him at the microphone.

The talk was about monitoring "fake news" on social media (and included a Charlottesville slide) and MAGA guy's question was basically that his personal experience on the ground at Charlottesville aligned with what they labeled "fake news" so how are they actually validating their facts? The response was truth is irrelevant, they only care about the "motivations" behind the news, which again is the complete antithesis of being a hacker.

Apparently he wasn't as big as the first MAGA guy and someone attacked him physically and stole his hat later on at the conference. The guy who stole the hat was then ejected from the conference by security for obvious reasons but that sparked a shitstorm on twitter because why do you punish the brave warrior of justice and allow the thought-criminal to roam free???! (apologies for the lack of twitter links, I can't seem to find anything at the moment).

A good overview of the drama from the organizer's perspective is in this podcast (the "07 / 25 / 18" one).

God this thread depresses me. The hacker community is dying, overdosing on idpol while continuing to chug the bottle.

Is Jeri Ellsworth a tranner or is this a rare case of an actual woman being competent at coding?

Look at google images. Too many angles that look normal to be fake.
She's from the before times when women were actually interested in computers.

E: Lollin'. @AmpleApricots 's post makes too much sense. That's why she looks so dumpy. It was even causing my trannydar to give some false blips.

I did some work with a disability group, multiple sclerosis and wheelchairs aplenty. I introduced them to GIMP while doing some tech support and they absolutely adored the name. They were over the moon about it; really it was a joyous thing to behold. Before then I had never considered that it might be offensive or that it had anything to do with disability. Not exactly a word I ever encountered much, outside of Linux stuff.

From a Hacker News discussion on Gimp -> Glimpse:
Borderware firewall (from back in the 90's and Y2K) was originally called Janus (after the Roman god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, and endings.) which seemed apropos at the time. But their first big customers were in Sweden, where they kept pronouncing it like "anus." Realizing they'd have this problem all over Europe and most of South America, they changed the name.

That's a founding story that never made it to their website ABOUT page.
I'm surprised that thread was so brief. That seems like it should have been a fun shitshow.

Glimpse 0.1 ships with new branding and logos, removes the "easter eggs" that were in the upstream code, refactored some basic UI elements, created a new 32-bit Windows installer using WiX, and other basic changes in distancing the code-base from the GIMP brand.
Easter egg removal. Nice. Like so many forks its going to be useless cosmetic hissyfussery.
