Hey reddit, thanks' for the gold kind ranger

What was the reason that you've uninstalled Opera desktop from your PC?

Many of us used it for some time, but eventually removed it from the system. For me it was mostly the fact that it connected somehow with crypto + pushed social media communicators from jewkerberg etc.

still have it installed, but only use it for specific sites (I use like 5 different browsers for different things), don't use it that much easier so don't really care or bothered by the stuff they shill.

if I want a "modern" opera that has sensible defaults and comes with most stuff I need out of the box I use vivaldi.

The last time I had Opera installed was like a decade ago. I was an avid Opera user back when it was still on their Presto engine, and by the time it became a barebones Chromium clone I ended up drifting between browsers to try and find something that would suite me. That was until Jon von Tetzchner started work on this new niche browser called Vivaldi, and in 2015 I installed a Technical Preview version and that's what I've been using ever since then.

And as for the modern day Opera, it's a pitiful shadow of what it once was. Opera used to pioneer features in web browsers we take for granted, it used to have an insane amount of customizability, it had integrated features like e-mail clients, RSS readers and so on, and now? Jon von Tetzchner left the company in 2011, in 2013 they've abandoned Presto and all the features that compelled the users to it, in 2016 they sold out to the Chinese, and now they have a shitty fork of their browser meant for "gamers" which has an incredibly cancerous Twitter account to advertise itself to braindead zoomers, plus a grift browser for cryptobros.

There is absolutely nothing compelling me to use modern day Opera in any shape or form, especially after Vivaldi has filled the void that was left after the abandonment of Opera Presto.

In Jon von Tetzchner we trust.

How would you rate the built-in ad blocker? How much would a lady have to tinker with it to avoid Youtube ads or does it work standard?

I don't use it, I use uBlock Origin instead lol

Though from what I know it uses standard ABP style ad lists like uBO, however do keep in mind they have a special list enabled by default that's meant to whitelist ads from Vivaldi's sponsors. They are a private company, they have no investors, and they need to make money somehow, so you get a bunch of sponsored tabs on a fresh install and stuff like this.

If you really like their browser they have a merch store so you can buy a mug or something if you want to support them.
