I wonder why more people DON'T keep opposums as pets honestly
I don't see how they're any different than, say, ferrets
They are deeply peculiar creatures, and once you get to know them, there's very little to "enjoy".

These possum featured here, the Virginia possum, does not play. Ever. Nor do they show much affection.
This is unheard of in American mammals, and continues to blow my mind to this day. They bear no hallmarks
of intelligence, and have some very, very shocking reactions to confinement that I won't discuss here.

Suffice it to say you would be better served by a ferret or skunk, provided you have the time and money to meet their
requirements.

Living in a wildlife sanctuary has allowed me to interact with most of the mammalian life of America. Of all the species
I've worked with, there's nobody like the possum. He's a weird, weird guy.

P.S - You don't want a goddamn raccoon.

I think that's another thing. Usually when animal isn't domesticated it's because it really does not want to be.

Ferrets are insanely affectionate and docile when raised properly. They can often be seen as exotic animals, but they're not much different to a cat; even more well-behaved, in fact.

You can't just say that and expect us not to ask

When stressed and confined, they are known to eat pieces from each other, and themselves. Rehabbers wake up to possums without legs, tails, ears. It's incredibly traumatizing.

Coons, skunks, foxes, even bears and big cats, all can be loving companions. It's just so expensive and difficult to do ethically that unless you've got some insane burning passion, it really isn't a good idea. Even with a loving, bonded animal, an accident with a 400lb puma is devastating. Know how your housecat will take a swipe at you for unknown reasons? Bears and big cats do the same shit. Except your arm comes off.

My mom once gave me and my sister 4 baby possums to take care of after a dog ate their mother, and boy do those things like dying. Dying and bitting my sister.
Only two survived and we managed to release then in the wild.
Did you know the mother licks their bellies so they can poop, otherwise they just constipate to death? We didn't.a

I hope this isn't too much of a redneck PL, but possums are absolutely delicious. Somewhere on the pork-chicken spectrum.

I've never had the heart to shoot one, myself, but I'll never turn possum meat down.

Coons I can shoot, but I wouldn't eat the meat. That goes for both species.
