Original Xbox Questions - Softmodding, etc.

I own an Xbox, but basically the only exclusive for it that I ever really wanted I was never able to convince anyone to buy for me and by the time I could afford a copy it was too late for me to really care.

Steel Battalion, you broke my heart.

Breakdown had some very interesting mechanics at the time.

Also, Fatal Frame 2 could be a good choice to get too.

1. Ninja Gaiden Black
2. Nothing

I can't think of any other games that aren't on another system at this point
Console exclusives that have XBOX versions come to mind.Anything that is on both the PS2 and xbox typically looks and runs better on the xbox thanks to its more powerful hardware.

Baulders gate dark alliance 1 and 2 are console exclusive, and the xbox version looks the best. Same goes for destroy all humans 1 and 2. Same goes for several gauntlet games (Dark Legacy is my favorite). You also have the OG forza and the halo games.

There is also the OG star wars battlefront which, while it had a PC version, the PC version is nearly damn impossible to run on any modern system, and is the only game GoG hasnt re-released (fucking annoying BS). So the xbox version is the way to go, plus 4 player split screen. Same goes for battlefront II. XBOX version is the best.

BLACK is a great shooter that is xbox exclusive. Gameplay is par for the course, but the SOUND is amazing. The SPAZ--12 shotgun sounds like a motherfucking freight train ramming into your ears. Even the basic pistol sounds like it would stop a person in their motherfucking tracks, not like the weak shit in modern shooters. It's fantastic to listen too, and was never really ported.

You also have the best version of star wars starfighter and jedi starfighter, the later never had a PC release. The GTA xbox versions look and runbetter, and still have the OG audio, which the steam version does not. I'm sre there are more console exclusives I am not remembering right now.

I mentioned Silent Hill 2, but Silent Hill 4 was also on Xbox. Silent Hill 3 was not, for whatever reason.

The Suffering and its sequel are great and worth having too.

You're a death row inmate who may or may not be wrongfully imprisoned in an Alcatraz style island prison. An earthquake hits the island and unleashes all sorts of freakish monsters and evil spirits and you have to escape.

It's a shooter but with Silent Hill-style enemies and surroundings, and you can build rage and turn into a beast form too. Some of the best enemies and bosses I've seen, each based on a form of torture or execution.

You find out more about the island and your past as you go. The second one is great also, this time you're back in your hometown which has been taken over by evil. And it lets you use your save from the first game to take your past decisions into account.

They were on PS2 as well, and you can get them both for cheap.

Timesplitters 1 is only for PS2. 2 and Future Perfect were on Xbox.

You are right. Timesplitters 2 is my favorite in the series being more to Goldeneye

I been looking for one for years but know the money involved to get one is money I can use with other things, I also want to get that Silent Scope game with the sniper gun since it was a cool game in the arcades.

Also there is Toe Jam and Earl and Crazy Taxi 3, I always like the Xbox as it was sort of a successor to the Dreamcast.

Well, I know that Black isn't an Xbox exclusive. It's on PS2 as well, but as with most multiplats it looks a tad nicer on Xbox.

the only interesting games that are still xbox only to this day are:

jet set radio future
sega gt
otogi 1 e 2
metropolis 1 e 2
breakdown and the conker remake.

Everything else has been ported elsewhere.
ninja gaiden in playable on 360 and xbone, halo is playable on 360 and xbone and pc, phantom dust is on pc and xbone and metal wolf is getting a re-release on everything.

I recently ordered an original XBOX online for a decent price after selling mine in 2004 and not having owned one since.

Nostalgia for Jet Set Radio Future was my main drive, but another XBOX exclusive I have not seen mentioned here is Grabbed by the Ghoulies.

705950When I saw "From the creators of Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie" on the box I was sold instantly back in the day.

The game setting is reminiscent of Luigi's Mansion, as the entire game takes place in and around a large haunted mansion. The gameplay style is quite a bit different however, as it is a beat-em-up / exploration kind of game. I remember it being very fun and I'm looking forward to playing it after so many years.

On top of those two exclusives, I've also ordered Oddworld Munch's Odyssey and Blinx, which I remember being decent, though I got quite far in them I never completed them, so let's see if accumulated experience in gaming will help me here. Oh and also ordered the first Halo. Should keep me busy for a while.

Would have got Panzer Dragoon Orta, as I've never played the XBOX one, just the first one on Saturn which I liked a lot, but it was too expensive. I'll probably get Halo 2 when I'm finished with all those as it's cheap, and I got the XBOX pretty much just for exclusives.

That's on Rare Replay for Xbox One, if that's more convenient for anyone here. I've still gotta try that.

It's decent enough, some of the gameplay can become a slog mostly because of the controls(it's like a twin-stick shooter but a beat'em'up) and the arena format that locks you in a room until everyone is dead makes some of the back tracking tedious if I remember it right.

But it's easy to keep playing just to see more of the game, it looks nice, it has the dry pun-heavy Rare humor and fun character design, varied locations after a while and some weird characters. In a way it's like a precursor to to Plants vs Zombies in aesthetics and tone. It's also hilarious to elbow drop tiny, tiny imps.

Don't know if it holds up at all but I remember enjoying one of the MechAssault games, I think I played Lone Wolf.

For real though Steel Battalion. Three pedals, two sticks, tons of buttons and a throttle. And you're no ESPer and your dad didn't build this. You're some chump in a mass-production unit. It took me a while to even manage getting out of the hangar, much less killing another robot. But after it's done you'll know that you can pilot a giant robot.

Today I bought an original Xbox dirt cheap and it's in like-new condition. Honestly couldn't ask for better at the $20 price point. I checked the system settings and it hasn't been updated since 2004.

Anyway, I've never owned one and have a couple questions:

What are the benefits to a softmod - could I simply install games to the HDD?

Is upgrading the existing 20GB HDD a viable option? I have a 500GB laying around somewhere.

Am I better off just leaving it as-is and buying games? I don't need it as an emulation station because I already have my desktop, Nvidia Shield, etc. I don't know what the current state of Xbox emulation is like on the PC.

Top 10 games? (Excluding Halo, I have the MCC on Xbox One)

Thanks!
I know this is an old thread but if you still have the console it is imperative that you open it up and remove the clock capacitor. They're known to leak on pre-2005 model xboxes. Simply tearing it off is fine, the capacitor only controls the internal clock circuit, which will keep power anyways if it's plugged in.

That isn't bad compared to the surface mount capacitors used on Sega Game Gears, Nomads, and Sega CDs and the Turbo Duos. I had one hell of a project dealing with a Nomad I found.

One of the key benefits of the OG xbox was that it often got the best versions of multiplats.

Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams (for Xbox it has better graphics plus adds an additional scenario to play through that the PS2 version doesn't have)

Conker: Live and Reloaded (Remake of Conker's Bad Fur Day. Unfortunately it's censored all to hell despite the M rating)

I also liked the Blinx games but haven't played those in years so I'm not sure how those held up.
Silent hill 2 looks better yes, but the flashlight has this odd issue where the flashlight fractures a lot more then the PS2 version.
Also, the Restless dreams version was re-ported to the PS2 in the greatest hits branding.

Conker is not only cencored, they also removed sections of the game that got simplified or straight up removed. It also half arsed a "we make fun that this is a remake" by pointing it out sometimes but it never goes farther then "i did not expect this to happen" and extending some jokes. art of the reason to get it was the aditional things included in the multiplayer section, but replaying it with bots now just is not the same.

Blinks aged like shit, the camera controles badly and is the biggest cause of death in game. Funny enough, the IP is abandonware now.
