Oscars 2021

wow

While I’m not too surprised or anything, it’s pretty clear the Oscars this year were to cater to the foreign media markets than the American ones. They’re going to make Zhao the new Boon-Jung Ho when he won one for Parasite.
Zhao’s films are in part a massive love song to the middle of the country. Her work is fantastic when it comes to capturing the vast emptiness of the plains while centering people within them. She deserves more attention IMO and the Oscar win hopefully will bring more attention to my neck of the woods for film making.

To the shock of no one, ratings are in the shitter, with a new record low. Down more than 58% from last year and the first time viewership fell under 10 million.

They might as well just post the results and leave it at that; it saves people money and time.

I stopped watching these ceremonies a while ago. Last time I watched them, I was expecting Leo DiCaprio to win Best Actor for The Revenant. Now it's just utter propaganda, which sucks because it overshadows the actual nominees/winners of these awards, which I'm actually fine with. Not surprised Tenet won Best VFX considering the abysmal output last year; this was clearly the best of the lot.

Boseman not winning Best Actor should't destroy him doing a pretty great job in the Ma Rainey film.

Grammys had record low ratings... Oscars had record low ratings...
How low do the ratings have to be for celebs to realize that they're not only cringe but also alienating to the majority of society?
Maybe when the Youtube videos about the Oscars get more views than the ceremony itself... but probably not.

They will most likely excuse it as the result of the pandemic. If it was a regular year, then it would most likely cause alarm. It says something when people who watch the oscars to mock them like Steven Crowder didn't even bother to watch them this year. Just nobody cared about the oscars this year whether positively or negatively.

Sadly that will be true.

I still don't understand why these major corporations think that insulting at least half of their audience would be any sort of net positive.

Then again, these people have probably never suffered any consequences for anything in their lives, so they don't realize that their actions have consequences because they've never suffered any consequences before.

Even still, holy shit. To drop from 23 million to less than 10 million is a huge disaster no matter how you slice it. And it's not like this is the first year where people "didn't watch any of the movies nominated." Hell, it's basically a meme at this point.

The main problem here, I think, is that the celebs have the mindset of "Twitter = public opinion" and all they see on Twitter is that the ceremonies weren't progressive enough.
I fully expect them to keep pushing what they're already pushing and, hopefully, the 2022 ceremonies will have even lower ratings.
I honestly would love for Hollywood to keep doing this and eventually make themselves irrelevant because the rest of the filmmaking world needs more recognition.

To give you a good idea how fucked the Oscars are:

Ouch, that drop from 23.6 million to 9.8 million. It's obvious the Oscars have been on a continual decline for the better part of the decade, but that is the steepest drop so far. Seeing it all laid out like this really emphasizes the fact fewer and fewer people give a shit.

It is amazing that there are still so many people infatuated with celebrities and Hollywood culture despite the fact that more than ever we know that these "stars" are nothing but pretentious, vacuous and out of touch dancing monkeys that stand for nothing. There is also the whole angle of the entire industry being a nest of degenerates preying on younger actors and actresses as the price of admission to the club.

This is not even a veiled rumor anymore, it is out in the open and still these elitist bastards believe they are the bastions of morality everyone should emulate.

It has been more than a year since I last sat down to see a new movie and truth be told, not even having the option to easily pirate any movie I want is an incentive, I just don't care to watch anything current year woke Hollywood is making because it is all so awful it is not even worth the bandwidth to download. It really does feel that they have pushed society to reach a point of cultural stagnation, regression and decay, Now movies are just repetitive rehashes, remakes and self-referential products, real creative or artistic vision is completely absent from the corporate structure. Seeing the whole corrupt Hollywood bubble rot and die is going to be soul cleansing. Good riddance.

I personally don't care about the Oscars, but the fact that they went out of their way to cash in on the NFT craze by turning Chadwick Boseman into an disembodied golden calf is just hilarious.

They really want us to literally worship black people, don't they?

2014 was the last time I remember it really being enjoyable, it's no surprise the ratings have been dropping since.
