Outward - The worst game I've ever continued to play. Drop your backpack before fighting, numbnuts.

So, Outward was released recently and it's a very...interesting sort of game. Looks like it's three generations old, has dreadful voice acting, is more obtuse than deep, and I've seen smoother combat in flash games, but I can't stop playing the fucking thing.

It is the only game that has pulled me away from The Division 2 for chrissake.

At its most charitable I'd say this was a fan's love letter to Morrowind - you're a pathetic stain to begin with (although if you know where to look you can break your power level in about six minutes), there are no directions to anywhere in your quest log so you need to write stuff down(!) or remember what NPCs tell you. Major events can occur in the world without your intervention (I lost my home town due to blowing off some growing signs of hostility...), the story does not specifically revolve around you as an individual, and yes, there are thirst and hunger meters.

It's ugly, sounds worse - although the music is fantastic in places - and yet the excitement of being able to afford a proper cooking pot and backpack before embarking on an adventure is incredibly endearing.

Anyone else been grabbed by this?

Hey now, it vaguely resembles Dark Age of Camelot, it's not entirely Asian!

Why does the OP read like two people talking. Are you okay?

Multiple people are ban evading on our account.

That's a bit harsh, it doesn't look so bad to me, sounds really interesting though, I've never heard of this before.

Now you've got me interested lol. Trailer looks kinda neat, I think I'll look into this :O

Despite its flaws, this does feel like a game the developers wanted to create, if that makes sense? It was a group of about ten people altogether, and there was definitely a single vision for the thing. It knows what its trying to do.

I got it, but haven't played it yet. Been waiting to see how their patches work out. Some bugs seem pretty bullshit and I'd like to avoid them in this kind of game, but I do love eurojank and this seems to be eurojank souls.

Don't start over! Once you get to a capital city things open up, and you start getting more general skills. I'm currently mixing up a bow and longsword/dagger combo - throw your basic weapon together with some linen cloth and predator bones for a handy bleed weapon early on.

I quite like how leveling up is done. You don't warn experience points or anything, you just learn more skills which gives you more options and covers weaknesses. Being able to lay traps and dodge without backpack encumbrance were literal game changers.

So far I've been attached to the warhammer and claymore, the former because staggering in the game is just ridiculously powerful and the latter because it's a fuckin' claymore. Went to join the paladin faction but that area is the fucking pits so I'm with the free country desert people.

So it's a S.T.A.L.K.E.R game then?

There's a reason most people don't like games where you have to manage hunger, thirst, temperature, sleepiness, etc. It's annoying and rarely adds anything. I really like Far Cry 2's map being an actual item and weapons degrading as you use them, but both of these are annoying things for most people that distract from gameplay. Far Cry 2 is located in a tough, poor part of Africa, with cutthroat mercs and rebels. S.T.A.L.K.E.R is set in an inhospitable area surrounding Chernobyl. If the game is atmospheric enough, you can get away with some of these things, otherwise people will just be annoyed with the game. Adding these elements to your typical fantasy RPG doesn't add anything.

Also, is this some sort of shill thread? I've never heard of this game before. It looks to me more like a crappy chinese MMORPG with additional steps more than anything.

What kind of shill starts by saying the game is largely terrible, dude.

It's a small independent developer with nothing of note in their history. It's only recently picked up steam.

Quite a few people nowadays take ironic approach to things they're sponsored by (see Aztrosist, Internet Historian, SsethTzeentach, etc.), where they intermixingly endorse and make fun of the product at the same time. It's not a new tactic, you know.

I think that's just you, it's the fourth best selling game on steam ATM

Kind of contemplating trying it, myself, I have a few friends that have sunk a good amount of time into it.

Thanks for the hint, sounds right up my alley. It's something I disliked most about Skyrim and other CRPGs. You end up being some kind of undefeatable demigod and it just utterly wrecks immersion.

The "stand on a rock and shoot arrows at things below" is a fully functional tactic, I'm pleased to say. Tricked a bandit mob through a bunch of trip wires before finishing him off, and now have a glowy sword that poisons and bleeds whoever it hits.

It's pretty Dark Souls in theme. A lot of people play it and they're die-hard about it, but in general it's kind of.. Under the radar, or just doesn't immediately appeal.

Eh, it's Dark Souls insofar as having a stamina management system. Do not go into this expecting a FROM title.

Just watched the trailer. "The obstacles aren't about single handedly crushing armies..." our narrator explains, while showing footage of the protagonist engaged in combat with 5 foes:story:. I'm not gonna shit on a small studio with ambitious ideas though. I might pick it up, during a Steam sale.
