As someone else said a pea coat is very versatile you can wear it with a suit or jeans and v neck.
Another option is a car coat, basically a hip length wool coat with buttons on the front. It’s longer than your average coat, but not as long as a trench coat and it generally looks good on everyone.
An affordable option is the Dockers Melton which can be had for under $100.
Avoid trench coats or other full length coats.
Also with hats I prefer visor beanies, they just look better on me than the standard beanie. But depending on your hair style beanies may not work for you.
Avoid neckbeard fedoras and trilbies unless you want to look like you put Bibles in the fiction section.
One option is a "news boy", they come in a lot of different styles and sizes but usually you can find a low profile one that looks pretty decent.
Doesn't flatten your hair like a beanie does.
