Overwatch

add some BB designs to that, but since they came out around the same time it's hard to say who stole from who. pharaoh (get it?) vs benedict, tracer vs mellka, soldier 76 vs oscar mike (granted that's just the "generic" soldier type, but still feels way to similar) - but later on you still got doomfist vs el dragon and wrecking ball vs "reddit penguin of doom" toby.

for years you had people in MMO circles claim WoW was the first MMO even unironically, so it's not like blizzard ever had to try.

and people were shitting on battborn's designs, we've gone full circle....

Can we stop pretending Battleborn had any significance?

Crap like that is why I rolled my eyes at all the people smugly shitting on paladins for ripping off overwatch and posting the dunkey video for the millionth time. Paladins had been in development before OW was even announced and despite what clout blizzard had, they were never that original:
Starcraft borrowed from warhammer 40k
Warcraft borrowed from warhammer fantasy, and from what I have seen WoW had some pretty blatant shit copied frol D&D.
I say Diablo was one of their more original IPs but that was on virtue of being made by another studio that was then bought out by blizzard.

Warning, autistic rant coming:
I've been salty at blizzard for a decade now, I was a fan of the first two diablos and was excited for diablo 3 (which took forever to release mind you, I remember reading stuff about the game in their website in 2007 or 2008 ffs) which ended up being a bland piece of shit and even the removal of the auction house and the expac didn't fix it, it just made a bland game into an ok game)
While I don't play starcraft, I do remember the disappointment about it coming in parts and the forced e-sports (DOTA2 and League ended up absorbing part of the audience too). In fact I am remembering a similar situation with sc2, where the first "expansion" brought a single new unit or some shit.
Lastly WoW had lost popularity and you kept hearing about how "all of my friends quit" and endless bitching about the dungeon finder and casualization of the game and every expac being bad (and yet they kept getting excited the second a new expac was announced).

In short I think only fanboys and normalfags not exposed to previous blizzard shittery are surprised OW went the way it did. I also said this a lot before, but I am amazed blizzard was able to kept going as long as they did with their glacial game output, they are not like valve who get most of their money via steam (the steam marketplace and trading cards have made them so much money it is ridicolous), guess wow subscription money and then OW lootboxes was more than enough.

World of Warcraft pretty blatantly and unapologetically steals from Everquest - going so far as to recruit EQ raiders to design WoW game elements and raids.

WoW was primarily successful because of all the MMOs at the time (EQ, SWG, AO, AC, etc) - it was far and away the most accessible to a new player. They drastically toned down teleportation costs/travel, death penalties, repair costs, and so on and offered a much more structured game play loop (with each zone having enough quests to level a character before the next zone, full on "PVP" zones not starting until level 30 or so, etc). MMOs were such dogshit at the time, in terms of "fuck the player", that World of Warcraft letting crafters make 200 Bullets or Arrows in a single click (that took 3 seconds) was revolutionary.

It was just "We made Everquest but took out the stuff that was alienating new players and then we got all of the new players who wanted to play a game like this". Eventually it became "We decided to alienate new players and then lost all of our subscribers so we stopped reporting on subscriber numbers".

Can we stop pretending Battleborn had any significance?
Significance? No.

Quality? All fucking day. Best fucking hero shooter to this day, and Blizzard knew it. Hence their outright murder of it. Suddenly announcing a "surprise beta" on BBs release date is so fucking filthy it should be liable for court.

It's really a miracle that MMOs got off the ground at all considering how punishing they were for the average dumbass player. The whole idea of "you died, now your gear is on your corpse, which is probably located right next to a bunch of monsters, good luck getting it back" is immensely punishing for no rational reason. To this day I don't trust anyone who enjoys text-based games. Fuck you Brad Verant.

It was 100% at the time playing an online game with more than 16 people at a time (possibly even hundreds!) was the hypest shit that ever existed - which is another blow against World of Warcraft, they've completely decimated their game world and it constantly feels hollow and empty.

Overwatch also follows the same Blizzard parallel - Take an existing game - this time a team shooter (TF2, CSGO) and strip it down, polish it up, and make it accessible by dropping the shit out of the skill ceiling. Then fuck it all up by pushing esports and pushing every balance change for the top 0.1% of players and metas.

arguably they never did if you look at the overall industry growth. when WoW came out 200k was considered a huge success, even blizzard themselves "only" estimated to get 500k players. but as much as WoW exploded, it never really translated into overall growth of the genre (in part due to the competition being fucking inept, like holy shit). WoW was basically the wii of mmos, highly successful but the only thing people ever played, most didn't move on to other MMOs or consoles. even without WoW sooner or later multiplayer/online play would've become more common, since everyone got onto the internet over time, and in 2007 everybody got that shit on phones.

as much as ow2, lawl

It’s Modern Blizzard, so no way they actually try and add sex appeal to any of the female characters, but this one made me chuckle.

I’m still half tempted to see how bad it is that they’re going Free to Play, but I get this feeling that much like the original, the best thing that’ll come from Overwatch 2 will be the SFM porn

F2P has always been a staple sign of shit. TF2 has become a massive fall from grace and every other game has been into that F2P cycle that goes from: release ---> great gameplay loop ---> string of bad updates ---> shell of its former self. However, the latest releases of F2P games don't even follow the second point and its shit from the start. How those games managed to survive is beyond me.

BB could have used a better User Interface though.

So I coughed up £35 to see how bad it is. It's literally the same game. I like the Orisa rework though, the q times are mental though 10 minutes for tank and DPS. My first tank one took 15 minutes, the game is a corpse already. Sending a refund request to PSN.
Lol, I spent $25.

Lmao Blizzard can listen to retarded shit like "homeless intolerant architecture" and change it but hasn't done a single thing to alter the biggest gripes the playerbase has been telling them about since 2016. (Archive)

This dev team is a fucking joke lmao.
I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard that kind of phrasing used for a game like Overwatch. I have yet to hear it in games like Fornite or Apex Legends, and I wonder why.

This is what happens when you make your hiring pool get infested with SJW shit. Instead of sitting down and coding, designing, and discussing balancing. It becomes bogged down by inane politics. I do think Microsoft is going to massively restructure there and fire a lot of people.

Don't be surprised if you see old faces return, they will offer a big pay cheque and assurance of crap like this not happen. I honestly think though a lot of the old devs quit because of the pay and politics bogging down. Jeff Kaplan saw the writing on the wall and left but I would not be surprised if they paid through the ass to come back.

i cant tell whats funnier, blizzard removing bars on a bench because a fag went ":(((( this hurts my feefees overwatch is supposed to be an idealic future" or blizzard doing that while ignoring whats basically annoying australian tank brigitte 2.0 being busted as fuck

speaking of, the overwatch twitter community would be a god tier community watch thread

You mean this Microsoft?

Edit:
Also, I'm not sure why you'd think the old guards would be much better.
For example,

Frost Giant is pretty much comprised of old devs worked on Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3. It's normal for any US video games company now to be participating politic announcement.

And the new studio, Dream Haven, from Mike Morhaime himself

In case of wondering why they have to do these, it's all about getting that ESG rating to attract more shareholders.
