Overwatch

Boy was I wrong! I failed to gauge the levels of greed of these corporate assholes. They releasing this as a separate product and not as an update to the existing game is a dick slap across the face of the people who bought the original game. They are going to charge 60 bucks for what is basically a DLC with the features, game modes and single player content that was supposed to be added in the first game and add to that they'll continue their predatory loot box practices. What a load of horse shit.

Don't ask questions, just consume product and then get excited for next product.

EDIT: I'm reading new information from people who have tried the demo that it is actually just an upgrade to the existing game?
Why won't they officially say that to clear the confusion?

That's because if they don't say anything, you'll think it's an actual improvement to their game.

They made a game rich in lore and a back story but never played on it. I want to see an actual story, hut never at 60 dollars. Should have just mass updated the first game instead

Edit phat thumb syndrome made me hit submit too soon. Finished post.

The "lore updates" should have been twice a year, minimum. Even if they only wanted to stick to backstories with the Archives shit, as much as people complain about that, it would have been a major step up from a comic like every year or so.

Don't mean to get into one of those moods but this right here is just a modicum of the issue with why the gaming industry is the way it is. I thought OW2 was just an idea or a meme because its existence should be stupid if they cared that much about the product they wouldn't whore a sequel out while the first OW is still growing.

When I first played the game my doubt was that they would try and milk the idea for everything using the lore as an anchor to sell more products rather than the interest of it that drew people in the first place.

The comments on the new cinematic trailer say “OH MY GOD WHY HAVEN’T THEY MADE AN OVERWATCH MOVIE YET”
But these characters are not made for movies. They don’t have depth or grow as characters. None of them really have any flaws. They’re just made to look pretty and shoot each other.

They said its literally the same engine with some graphical updates and a PvE progression system. With OW1 being updated concurrently with OW2 to allow crossplay, I'm wondering what they think justifies the price tag.

They're all blank slates they could probably do some cool stuff with if they actually tried. Moira being pretty much Blizzard Mengele seems like fertile storytelling ground.

I don’t wanna be that guy, but TF2 has much better characters.
Eh I'd say they're on a roughly even footing except the characters in TF2 were never meant to be anything more than what they are. There is no official (As far as I know!) TF2 comicbook or novella written by hack-author of the week.

Because the confusion allows them to sell it to more mouth breathers at $60.

Look, TF2 lore has a lot of charm and all I'm not going to say that Overwatch lore is any better. But they are both really low effort story accessories to blank characters. It's just that Overwatch is YA literature quality and TF2 is Scrooge McDuck.

You can like Scooge McDuck better then YA lit but don't pretend the universe where Abraham Lincoln invented stairs to make it easier rocket jump to the second story of buildings is actually high art.

TF2 is significantly better in a lot of ways than it's commonly given credit for, comparing anything to TF2 will likely come out with Team Fortress coming out on top.
Tf2s got gameplay where individual performance actually matters a lot. Compare that to say overwatch.
Tf2 also seem a lot less static then overwatch where the most random of shit can happen beacuse of the higher freedom it allows players.

To be fair, though, TF2 is old and dead(ish).

8th most played game on steam. If thats deadish then what is "alive".

Nobody is saying that but TF2 has fun and likable characters who do and say funny things and get into funny and interesting situations. I could actually sit down and watch a full-length movie starring the TF2 characters, I don't think I could with Overwatch though.

Valve had actually planned to work with adult swim to make a TF2 tv show, but it failed because valve time.
My soul hurts.

Venture Brothers is pretty much just a bunch of parodies of Johnny Quest and capeshit characters and archetypes, they still made it good.

Overwatch's problem is the characters are pretty much designed to be easily recognizable to identifiable for different languages/countries in a way the TF2 mercs didn't need to be, The old line of blockbuster movies needing to be easily translatable into Mandarin or it doesn't go in? Same shit with OW. EVen with shit like Tracer and 76 being gay, it's quite minor shit that countries where that's a no no, but the gist is the same; super bright, colorful "good guys" fight robots and what pretty much amounts to a team of devils.

They can work it, and I think given what little they've demonstrated I think they can do it easily (PTSD Bastion, DVa not actually being a retard, etc), they're just lazy. How many characters have super mysterious backstories and motivations now? Sombra, they've never explained why Reaper is running around killing the rest of OW, Doomfist apparently has some plot he killed the old Talon heads to help put into place. Pieces are there, just historically they've been lazy and/or refused to do anything with. But I will concede that even if they did do anything, it wouldn't be but so interesting because of, again, it needing to be Transformers-tier directing in order to be easily translatable and identifiable across borders.

tl;dr There's potential, but it has a ceiling.
