This is misinformation at best. Overwatch 2 is NOT and expansion. An expansion by definition adds content and functions to an already existing game. Overwatch 2 is a stand alone product that does not require the original to function. Someone could buy OW2 without needing to own or have played the original in any capacity. OW2 only interacts with the original game via PvP matches, OW2 has separate multiplayer PvE missions and modes that OW1 players cannot access, nor the modifier "Talents" and items that characters will have in the sequel for said PvE modes.
Why release a literal number sequel if the intention isn't to divert resources and manpower to the sequel? How am I supposed to believe that a sequel that is going to have so much new content and new game modes is not going to divert resources and manpower away from the old game? ( a game that will not receive any new character until the next game drops next year, if they don't delay it even further ) I'm expected to believe NOW all the good stuff is going to come out despite the fact a lot of the veteran and competent talent already left the company to start new projects and studios of their own because they couldn't stand working under the current mandates and conditions imposed by Activision.
Blizzard should have done their job and deliver the content that OW1 costumers bought the game for 4 years ago (Not 7 years, unless you are referencing the fact that OW is the cobbled together result of the failed "Titan" MMO) Yeah, NOW I'm supposed to fall for the same pack of lies they told me when I bought the original game and have the privilege to pay a premium price to access content that should have been added to the original via updates.
I'm supposed to believe the company that delivered the "don't you have phones" line and that managed to utterly fuck up the remaster of one of their most acclaimed games, Warcraft 3 and all amid the pro-CCP pandering. Yeah, that's the company I'm going to put my trust in!
I'm not in charge of Blizzard's marketing but if you want to split hairs it's
clearly an expansion.
An expansion simply adds something to an existing game. I understand that Blizzard is
billing Overwatch 2 as a "sequel" but it's clearly being built on top of OW1 to a point where you can buy OW2 as an expansion to OW1. If you don't already own OW1 I would charitably describe it as a "battle chest" package rather than a full on sequel.
The game's director explained on the announcement that the game was being built on OW1 - that OW2 for the PvP mode will just have an option for updated models otherwise it's basically OW1. You will be able to play with OW1 players. The clear focus is the single player story/talents system which is
clearly something being added to a game that pretty obviously already exists. The characters, the story, the assets, are all coming from OW1.
You don't need OW1 to play OW2, but when you play OW2 PVP you'll still be playing OW1. Suggesting that Overwatch 2 is a sequel would be like suggesting that Street Fighter 5 : Ultra Edition is a sequel to Street Fighter 5, because you don't need an existing SF5 disk to play SF5UE.
The marketing team clearly wants to market it as an expansion though because Blizzard doesn't have an amazing track record of attaching single player expansions to multi-player games. Starcraft 2, for example, sold roughly 6,500,000 copies but the expansions both struggled to hit even 1,000,000 in sales. Blizzard clearly does not want expansion sales, they want sequel sales - even if the team isn't really ready to actually deliver a sequel. The only innovation they've talked about in the PvP mode is "Push" - which is just a payload that can go in either direction and specifically the ranked mode in Splatoon 2.
The reason I'm a stick in the mud about it is because OW1 could probably use a real, actual sequel that represents a real jump forward in gameplay and design (Like WoW to BC, or BC to WOTLK, Diablo 1 to Diablo 2) and not just this wet fart they're trying to pass off as a real thing. OW1 (IMO) was released hastily and borrowed
real fucking heavily from Team Fortress 2, but that was almost 5 (or more) years ago and the team should have lots of new and innovative ideas that they just couldn't put into OW1.
I vastly prefer even Blizzard's huge mis-steps (Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3) because those were actually innovative ideas, just executed really badly.
I referenced 7 years because although though the game released 4 years ago - the team should probably have the story written well before the game releases. The story is one of the things that needs to be in place, even from a loose standpoint, very early on. We don't exactly know when "Titan" became "Overwatch" but we do know it probably had a 2-3 year dev cycle of it's own, intentionally or otherwise.
