I'm a fan of Giorgio de Chirico's metaphisical art, especially his more architecture-focused stuff. I like the modern take on early renaissance. Speaking of which:

Le Déjeneur sur l'Herbe by Edouard Manet.

The female nude is thought to be Victorine Meurent, the woman who became his favorite and frequently portrayed model, Who later was the subject of Olympia.

In general, Manet's paintings are amazing,

Yesterday was the birthday of the great Jean-Michel Basquiat, he would have turned 59.

If we're allowed to do modern, digital artists, I'd like to shout out Jakub "Werewolf Guy" Rozalski, from Poland. I've seen quite a few of his works floating around before I found his website, but I really like his work. If I had money to spend on such luxuries, I'd buy one of his prints (the one below), but alas, it'll have to wait.

Next is a contemplative piece I've posted elsewhere by the Russian Ivan Kramskoi. I like this one for the sense of cold introspection. The rising sun in the background, the cold, rocky earth, the look on his face... I get a very cold feeling from the whole thing, but I love it.

P.S. If anyone could identify this piece, I'd really appreciate it. I found an Alibaba store that sells prints but they don't mention the name of the work or artist as far as I can see.

Kind of necroing this thread. I have a massive collection of paintings, and sometimes try to digitally restore them as a hobby, so I may post some here from time to time.

I'll start with a few pieces from Thomas Cole (Bolton, Lancashire, England, U.K. 1801-1848 Catskill, New York, U.S.A.), one of my favourites.

The Garden of Eden (1828)

His famous series The Course of Empire (1834-1836).

The Savage State

The Arcadian State

The Consummation of Empire

Destruction

Desolation

I like Thomas Cole's use of grand, sweeping landscapes, where the people are tiny. It makes you think how small and impermanent we are, especially in the passing of time series.
Or he really just wanted to do landscapes.

The Architect's Dream is crazy. I wonder how often the concept artists of Blade Runner viewed that?

It's Albert Bierstadt's (Solingen, Rhine Province, Kingdom of Prussia 1830-1902 New York City, U.S.A.) time, one of the most iconic Hudson River School painters and also a favourite of mine.

The Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse

The paintings each depict a scene from Alfred Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott, a poem in which the poet describes the plight and the predicament of a young woman, loosely based on the figure of Elaine of Astolat from medieval Arthurian legend, who yearned with an unrequited love for the knight Sir Lancelot, isolated under an undisclosed curse in a tower near King Arthur's Camelot. Waterhouse painted three versions of this character, in 1888, 1894 and 1915.

I Am Half-Sick of Shadows, Said the Lady of Shalott (1915)

This painting depicts an earlier point in the tale of the Lady of Shalott than those depicted by Waterhouse in his previous two works of 1888 and 1894; the Lady is still confined in her tower, weaving a tapestry, viewing the world outside only through the reflection in the large mirror in the background. In the painting, the mirror reveals a bridge over a river leading to the walls and towers of Camelot; also visible nearby are a man and a woman, they're the "two young lovers lately wed" referred to in Tennyson's poem. The scene is set shortly before an image of Lancelot appears in the mirror, enticing the Lady out of her tower to her death.

1747533553427.webp

The Lady of Shalott Looking at Lancelot (1894)

The painting depicts the pivotal scene in the third part of the poem: the Lady spies "bold Sir Launcelot" in her mirror: the sight of the handsome knight and the sound of him singing draws her away from her loom to the window, golden yarn still clinging around her knees, bringing down the curse upon her as "the mirror crack'd from side to side". She leaves the tower to take a boat across the river, but meets her death before she reaches Camelot.

1747533521116.webp

The Lady of Shalott (1888)

The Lady has a lantern at the front of her boat, and a crucifix is positioned near the bow. Next to the crucifix are three candles. Candles were a representation of life, two of the candles are already blown out, signifying that her death is soon to come.
