Vivian is girl. No troon. She have inferiority complex. None of this gender bullshit. Her voice in the remake is cute. In my opinion she and Flurie are among the best partners along with Goombella and Yoshi Kid.

Also I fucking love the visual upgrade that chapter 6 got. Even though there's no Shadow Sirens boss fight it is still pretty fun. It always was my favorite chapter. Its Agatha Christie.

It still is sad the aforementioned boss fight and the original PM partner cameos weren't added in. But regardless its fun overall. They didn't even need to upgrade the toad kid or the crow dialogue. It gives it charm imo. Though I did see an edited screenshot of the former saying Edlegard was right. Heh.

As a filthy casual who's beaten the game, I can say that I like it. I don't really like most the things they changed, but I really liked some of the things they added like the sound test. I still think it would've been perfectly fine if they just made the game widescreen and gave it the Mario 3D All Stars treatment. Hell, throw in 64 and Super with it as well. If there's one thing I've realized with the remake, it's that the game has aged like wine and was perfectly fine the way it was. Sure it had some flaws, but TYD was never completely perfect.

If there was anything I sincerely didn't like, it was the new soundtrack (but specifically the rearranged music. The new music they added was inoffensive) and obviously the script rewrites. Vivian being rewritten to be tranny is whack, but it doesn't make TYD a bad game. Honestly, I'd rather have the name "Shadow Sirens" back instead of the "Three Shadows" than one of my meat shields being a ghoul. I also really dislike how it's harder to mash through text and they took away the ability to hit 'Z' to rewind to a previous text line one might've missed.

Some of the effects were lacking too. Starting a Chapter and having the new confirmation sound was a downgrade, the "End of Chapter!" announcement lost a lot of its impact, The curses being lightning bolts instead of flashes were a downgrade (They could've at least made them different effects, but all of them were the same lackluster lightning bolt effect. Shake the screen or something). Yoshi's mobility seems nerfed since now he accelerates instead of going full speed unless you jump on him while moving. I also never noticed how much I miss notches in controllers playing this because the angles are very specific. It's a lot more difficult to go in a perfectly straight line than in the Gamecube version. Also they tripled the price of Power Rush badges so now it's harder to become the absolute monster that is Mario with 5hp and 20 Power Rushes equipped. Thankfully it's still possible, but generally speaking with all remakes ever, it's best to not change anything and just add content.

The updated graphics are pretty nice and honestly the Banjo Kazooie/Undertale text sounds grew on me as I realized there were a lot of characters in the series that now have a semblance of voice acting that didn't before. Even after all the nonsense they decided to change, it's still Thousand Year Door and it's still fun af.

Out come the groomer journalists. Charlie Hebdo them all.

I dislike this style of blatant posturing throughout this article. It's "middle school essay" levels of bad.

Oh, sure. We need more characters like Vivian, a character edited to be transgender via haphazardly slapping a few snippets of dialogue in a single localization. I read the article and that is genuinely the author's point. My favorite is this quote.

Vivian’s gender is also never the butt of any of the party's jokes. She’s the strongest character in-game, and Mario and his friends all seem to respect her. Not once is her identity questioned by Mario and the party, and they let her join the adventure on merit alone.

Which is, once again, an English-only trait, on top of being mostly wrong anyway. All other languages have characters weirded out by Vivian but following along with Mario's leadership, and there are multiple instances of them making cracks at Vivian being male in the original translation, including the "dating goomba" becoming legitimately upset because Mario brought him a man dressed as a woman. If you want to look really deep, there is an entire joke in the official manga where Mario himself is revolted when he discovered Vivian was actually a feminine man. Vivian is also far from the strongest character, the distinction being genuinely objective based on which dominant player strategy is being used, all of which exclude her beyond utility. That's blatantly just the author inserting his wishful thinking into his actual perception of reality.

The strangest thing is he cites Mother 2, not 3, as an example, stating there is a gay character in it. Normally people cite the magypsies in 3, but he instead points to Tony in 2 being a valuable representation of LGBT characters because in an offhand interview from the creator, he claims Tony is gay. Fittingly, this once again is a weird revision which has absolutely zero influence on the overall story, yet this author presents it as some groundbreaking innovation.

But yes, there needs to be more localization meddling to change characters to randomly announce which bathroom they use and not more characters like, say, Bobbery in the same game, whose character arc focuses on overcoming the guilt of losing a loved one by using grief as a source of strength. You know, a more complex and intricate story which deals with a deeper yet far more common circumstance every player will experience, including impressionable children who are not typically exposed to this invaluable message in literally all modern-day media they frequently consume. Even going back to the Mother 2 example he cites, you can see that whole franchise as a message surrounding familial abuse, parental love, and the importance of managing grief as written into the characters. But instead he fixates on a grade schooler being gay as its most valuable message.

This title ironically belongs to one of the real women in the party.

It's Tony, not Jeff. Even the article says so. But that's better, because it's funny that they're playing up such a minor role in EB as important representation.

If I could ge to hacking TTYD remake, I woul do an 'Everything Else Dewoked' hack. The hacks that restore Vivian's 2004 characterisation and the catcalling are very known a this point, but I wan to undo about all of the 'woke' dits to the script. I might even do that discomfort with Vivian that @0 0 mentioned.

Then again, I wan to do a hack that changes the gallows to a bell, based o @NerdShamer 's commen, though I do not know how to 3D nodel.

Yes, sorry. I swapped the two names by accident.

I hadn't really used Flurrie much in the original, but here she's S tier and a tank. Her only weakness is spikes. She's great clearing mobs.

At max rank Flurrie is a self healing tank with whats basically a OHKO special on regular enemy groups. She's always been really good but so few people want to even give her a try because of her design lol

She really was my least favorite based solely on her design lmao

Isn't the original Italian version where they actually made Vivian a fucking tranny at first?

Not sure if someone did this already, but I got bored and decided to look up the localization credits for both versions (well, the NoA English ones at least).

The original game credits ten localizers, including support and management roles:

The remake credits twenty-three:

Now I'm wondering if this craz- oh sorry, I mean wild censorship is nothing more than dead weight trying to look busy to justify their positions because how the fuck does a localization that's essentially already completed require more than double the manpower of the original?

Almost certainly a coincidence but the only name between the two lists that's similar is Erik Peterson and then Erin Peterson. It'd be kinda funny if it turned out he transed and still works there.

I did research and no its certainly not the same guy. Former guy left a while ago, latter guy is a bilingual French-speaking guy. A good chunk of them are also for the Canadian French and Latino Spanish versions of the game, too, so that's possibly why. That won't deny the fact that the english-centric ones are indeed all pozzed in one form or another.

Late to the discussion, but in the original TTYD, as a kid I always took Vivian's sisters picking on her as them being jealous that she was the "cutest" one - or maybe that she was ugly by their species's standards. (Like the Twilight Zone episode, which I also watched at that age)

I played the remake and the one piece of dialogue that the troons are latching onto could easily be interpreted as Beldam and Mariam bullying their sister by saying Vivian was a boy instead of a girl because she's so ugly. And now the bullying feels worse because she is aware of just how much her sisters don't like her. I know most trannies wouldn't know this on account of being men, but many girls are bullied about their looks and are called boys or "it" to demean them.

I realize that in the original Japanese, (s)he's an okama, but I'm American and in true American fashion, I only consider the English release canon. Same for Birdo ;)

I'd imagine that the new localizers are paid dogshit compared to the older, more competent team who had more pressure to get the game finished faster.
Same for Birdo ;)
With Birdo, I see it as Vivian's situation but reversed. Mario 2 (Doki Doki whatever) was the first appearance and it was never really established what Birdo was. Then Japan had crossdresser actors do Birdo's voice later on, so as far as I'm concerned, Birdo trooning out was Japan's fault.

Bit of a derail but I looked up some Birdo history and found something fucking hilarious. There was a game called "Captain Rainbow" on the Wii in 2009 that never got released outside of Japan and China because it was a trainwreck.

HOLY SHIT MY FUCKING EYEBALLS
1717652647072.png

Apparently the game stars an MC named Nick from "MUMERICA" who's TV show isn't popular anymore so he goes to an island as 'Captain Rainbow' full of a bunch of misfit Nintendo characters to help each other with favors to grant each others wishes. If you're familiar with Nick Rekieta, it's basically Hedonism 2, the game. What's hilarious about it is that Birdo has a big presence in it, and is characterized as a full blown troon by:
-Claiming to be a "Sexy Dynamite Monster" but is unpopular and went to the island to wish to be attractive
-Staying in a house called the "Kawaii Ouchie" and the house sort of looks like a fucking post op axe wounded crotch (image for that in the wiki link above if you care to see it)
-Getting called 'young lady' by Little Mac, followed by him saying '.....depending on one's viewpoint'.
-Going to jail for using the women's bathroom because robot jailer said 'you're a guy, so no lol'. Birdo gets pissed and rage rants to the point where the text is a bunch of X's and the audio is bleeped.
-Having a deep, obviously male voice.
-Asking Nick to go get proof to show jailer that he put a woman in prison. Nick goes to the Kawaii Ouchie and returns with a censored object found under the bed. It's implied that it's a vibrator.
-Crushing on Nick after being released from prison and kisses him, which knocks Nick out.

Gameplay and some good comments here:

Captain Rainbow
Still pissed captain rainbow never released outside japan, lots of weird goofy games got fucked from global release back in the day due to game journos having personal gripes with specific characters or shit being "too Japanese". Bitch it's MADE IN JAPAN WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU EXPECT?
