having a ruler with the tolerant trait seams extremely unlikely during that timeframe, unless threes an event to get the trait. In EU5 you can revive Hellenism by hiring Gemistos Plathon as Byzantium and having a ruler with the tolerant trait, this gives you an event option that converts 10% of your capital to Hellenist.
I imagine the Fate of the Phoenix flavor pack will add more content for him and Hellenism, given this is probably the wildest alt history possibility that's still in reason. I was genuinely surprised when they said that Pletho was a character, because he just doesn't exist in EU4 outside an advisor from a mission. Hopefully they emphasize his role in the Italian Renaissance, given he reintroduced a lot of Greek texts and helped to start a new Academy in Florence. In EU5 you can revive Hellenism by hiring Gemistos Plathon as Byzantium and having a ruler with the tolerant trait, this gives you an event option that converts 10% of your capital to Hellenist.
The people so fanatical the idea of compromising with their coreligionists threw their empire into chaos 'reviving' a religion they would consider demon worship is a tired meme, Third Odyssey and its consequences and all that. Not really encouraging to know they're wasting time that could go into content on something so silly too, hopefully this won't turn into the equivalent of adding pony characters while major religions remain undeveloped. In EU5 you can revive Hellenism by hiring Gemistos Plathon as Byzantium and having a ruler with the tolerant trait, this gives you an event option that converts 10% of your capital to Hellenist.

Pletho wasn't claiming to be the inheritor of a continual religion. Though there are some claims he was a part of a secret society which survived in the Empire which continued something of it, I'm skeptical of such ideas personally. His views didn't resemble Hellenism as it was practiced and were quite different and influenced far more by his Platonist stance and Zoroastrianism. His writings in the form of the Nomoi still exist to some degree, though the original was destroyed, so it's just fragmentary, so I can see for yourself how it would be if his ideas were received better, considering he had the ear of the Emperor and taught a lot of important figures of the Renaissance.Hellenism surviving as a deviant fetish and art community in a cosmopolitan capitol city sounds historically plausible.
I once worked on an alt-history mod for EU4 and planned on adding in Pletho as a way to allow the player to go Zoroastrian. The idea was ultimately scrapped but in the process of discussing it with other devs it became apparent that they only thought Pletho was someone trying to revive old Roman polytheism, which seems to be the general understanding of him amongst Paradox players as far as I can tell. His views didn't resemble Hellenism as it was practiced and were quite different and influenced far more by his Platonist stance and Zoroastrianism.
Yeah, I do hope they go for that angle more than anything. Given that the Byz flavor pack isn't coming out until Q2 of next year, it could be worth making a suggestion thread on the PDX forum to try and head off any carbon copy Hellenism in the pack that is doubtless going to be included. Emphasize it as new and weird; maybe the player has some hand in the exact mechanics it uses by drawing on different influences. If they don't, I can say I will make that mod when it comes out.I don't really think there should be pagan 'revivals' of any type in EU4's timeframe. The practices and customs had either so thoroughly died out or been integrated into other religions that any attempt to 'revive' them would wind up being completely alien to the subject of the project and probably better resemble the Cults of the Supreme Diety and Reason than any late-antiquity poly/henotheism. But starting a new religion could be a cool mechanic, the timeframe is full of that.
I blame the Russian propensity for having 4 names they use for their monarchs. Not quite France tier, where I can never manage to remember which Louis did what, and there were 19 of them.Paradox did an oopsie
If you think that's bad go look up how often "Charles" shows up all across Europe.I blame the Russian propensity for having 4 names they use for their monarchs. Not quite France tier, where I can never manage to remember which Louis did what, and there were 19 of them.

I dont think this expansion will fuck the game as bad as the last bc the last one rolled out with a major gameplay revision, and that was the culprit for the fucked state we find ourselves in now. This expansion will probably be...fine, but as long as this gameplay update stands, the game is still pretty shit. My conspiracy sense makes me believe pdx sabatoged the game on purpose to make the inevitable Stellaris 2 release more attractive. You know how Stellaris only just sorta kinda fixed itself after 23 hotfixes? Well who's ready to do it all over again:

My bet is on HoI5 after EU5. Wouldn't mind honestly. Hoi5 means no more stupid changes for Hoi4. I will feel bad for all the major mods that decide to make the jump however. The time and effort needed probably won't be worth it if CK3 and Vic3 are anything to go by.My bet is on HoI5 after EU5. It's like pottery.
