If you’re looking for a good base game I’d say CKII as most of the DLC for that just adds in more playable factions and if I remember right the Deluxe edition gives you the Byzantine and Islam DLC’s to play around with - so you can play pretty much almost anywhere on the map. CKII isn’t an easy game to understand at the start however.I want to get into Paradox games badly but first I need to know if my laptop can run the game and then I need to know how much to save up for the DLC's.
Also, I'm torn between buying Crusader Kings 2 or Hearts of Iron 4.for my first Paradox experience.
Yeah, Sunset Invasion is whack if you don't specifically want to play it. I didn't even know what it was and activated the huge list of DLC. Was having a fun time painting Britain green and helping in crusades, then all of a sudden Aztecs come out of nowhere. Was one of the most WTF moments I've had in a game lol.If you’re looking for a good base game I’d say CKII as most of the DLC for that just adds in more playable factions and if I remember right the Deluxe edition gives you the Byzantine and Islam DLC’s to play around with - so you can play pretty much almost anywhere on the map. After that, the DLC to look at are Old Gods, Holy Fury, and (personally) Horse Lords. You can swap out Horse Lords for Rajas of India if you want. Old Gods adds an earlier start date, new cultures, playable pagans, and really sets the tone for the DLC to follow. Holy Fury is amazing - it expands further on the mechanics introduced by Old Gods, revamps the Crusades to more accurately reflect the various results from historical crusades, allows pagan rulers to embrace organized religion in a historical fashion, gives ways to customize faiths, makes holy orders more important, etc etc. It’s fantastic. Horse Lords and Rajas of India allow you more flexibility on where you play, with some nice quality of life additions for other people. Neither are mandatory but until you’ve played the second coming of Atilla the Hun but this time you’re Jewish, or sacrificed the pope to Kali, you haven’t really fully experienced CKII IMO
Reapers Due, Sons of Abraham, Monks and Mystics, and Jade Dragon are nice for flavor and adding variety but I wouldn’t call them mandatory. Reapers Due is easily the best of the four.
The Republic DLC is for when you want a very different game from your standard play through, as it focuses around the small merchant republics that would see a large growth in power and influence as the Middle Ages advanced.
Charlemagne is a mixed bag. The older start date and tribal governments can lead to interesting games, but also to megablobs. It’s Old Gods but far worse.
Conclave is a love it or hate it. I like it for giving me an actual reason to not just give all my council seats to random courtiers but plenty of people hate it for the same reason.
Sunset Invasion is for the After the End mod and for when you want to throw all historical accuracy out the window.
Shouldn't they be more worried about people doing Fascist New Zealand memes in HOI?
Don't know how you can take the 'islamophobia' out of a game literally called "Crusader King", but w/e. It's Reddit, come tell me when they're not being faggy.
Well damn. Paradox, stop being faggy if you're going to keep making historically based games. I will still continue to gladly creamapi every bit of that dlc mountain, though.
Its not to bad in their forum. they reduced the spammers alot and you still can talk freely. keeping a very specific forum none-political and free of basic insults isnt a big deal. The fan communities are just taking the companies stance.
Yeah, their forums are alright IMO. Subreddit, however, is in somewhat advanced stages of faggotry, and for example kaiserreich sub attracts unironic communist degenerates. To be fair, those commies are at least trying not to get a conniption fit every time someone makes a Kingfish meme. Its not to bad in their forum. they reduced the spammers alot and you still can talk freely. keeping a very specific forum none-political and free of basic insults isnt a big deal.
they also dont have a SJW problem.
I thought Kaiserreich basically was always meant to be communist fapfic anyway.
Well going by /vg/ threads there were plenty of fascist wehraboos and Mosleyites too.

Just if you are bad at the game, the german bloc and the Russian Bloc and even the Japanese are strong as hell. UK and France are waaay weaker than the SU in the basegame.I thought Kaiserreich basically was always meant to be communist fapfic anyway.
Also, I am almost to 1,000 hours in Stellaris though admittedly some of that is me just pausing the game and leaving it running. The last patch really fixed the AI's inability to run their own economy, and on the grand admiral difficulty level it really gives you a run for the money. This one is really coming across as a labor of love and its probably the best space 4x ever at this point.
