Quick update, they made a mobile game for their space IP, and took down their trailer after minutes because it was full of stolen assets.
People also reporting that the game is a very clear clone of some Nova game(no idea) and that it even shows the nova name in some options.
Apparently they outsourced development to China

I know greed is kinda Paradox's thing, but this is a new low even for them.

Yeah, it was Stellaris Galactic Conquest, made by GameBear or BlueBear or something, based on their game Nova Empire.

One of hte assets included in the game was a slightly edited artwork from Halo 4.

Paradox took the game down 5 hours after it launched.

I'll never get why companies tease mobile games or hype the up in any fashion. All you are going to do is piss everybody off. Talk shit about Bethesda but at least when they launched Fallout shelter they didn't tease it and just said yea we got a mobile game and you can download it and is more or less just cross promotion for fallout 4. I'm also not sure why they dont just stick with marketing these games to china only becuase that what aduince they seem to be made for and no one will care if you stole assets in china. Yet im not a big brained marketing excutative so i don't know.

Tencent owns 5% or so stock in Paradox so no surprise.
paradox has had both HOI3 and HOI4 banned from sale in china for its historical representation of history. the ministry of culture directly spoke about HOI3 in state media.
china daily said:
Swedish video game banned for harming China's sovereignty
(Xinhua)
Updated: 2004-05-29 09:31

China has banned a Swedish-made computer game for "distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Ministry of Culture (MOC) said Friday.

The PC game, "Hearts of Iron", was accused of distorting historical facts in describing the Fascist regimes of Japan, Germany and Italy during World War II.

Moreover, "Manchuria", "West Xinjiang", and "Tibet" appeared as independent sovereign countries in the maps of the game. In addition, it even included China's Taiwan province as the territory of Japan at the beginning of the game.

"All these severely distort historical facts and violate China's gaming and Internet service regulations," the MOC said. "The game should be immediately prohibited."

All websites are banned from releasing the game and all the CD-ROM game copies will be confiscated, the MOC said, and the sellers will be punished according to law.

Internet bars that provide downloads of the game or fail to stop those Internet surfers who download, install or play the game, will be fined or even ordered to stop business.

The game was made by Paradox Entertainment, a games developer based in Stockholm, capital of Sweden, published by Strategy First, and was first released in 2002.

The MOC has established an imported game products censorship committee in an effort to step up censorship on the content of online games.

The committee regulates that online games with content violating basic principles of the Constitution, threatening China's national unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity will be banned from importing.

Online games with content threatening state security, damaging the nation's dignity, disturbing social order and infringing on other's legitimate rights will also be prohibited.

Earlier in March this year, the State Press and Publication Administration (SPPA) banned a Norwegian-made computer game, "Project IGI2: Covert Strike".

The game was accused of intentionally blackening China and the Chinese army's image as a freelance mercenary fights in the game across three linked campaigns in the former Soviet Union, Libya and China, where he steals intelligence and conducts sabotage in China and shoots at China's soldiers while China's national flag and signs like "China Aviation" pop up frequently.

The SPPA in early 2003 banned a US-made computer game, "Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour Expansion", also for smearing the image of China and the Chinese army.

The MOC said that all foreign online games must accept content examination by the ministry before they enter the Chinese market. Those already-entered online games must make up relevant examinations before Sept. 1, or the game operators will be punished according to law.

The ministry allows the import of foreign online games whose content accords with Chinese national conditions and has positive effects on young people's mentality, the MOC said.
paradox does not sell a different version of the franchise for the chinese market and HOI4 being banned came about a year after tencent's investment in the studio. the studio has its problems but a 4th column investor controlling their actions isn't one of them.

Or they just couldnt find a way to make the game work for the chinese market. Nobody would buy a game with the chinese version of history.

I would pay for it no... but I would be lying if I was not curious about just how distorted that would be.
They arent very creative or good with history to begin with... the only reason people play paradox games are the autists that write the code for the the spreadsheet mappainter.

It sounds very hard, but maybe somebody COULD do it. i mean there is an alternative history mod for a timeline where the germans lost ww1.

so even devs outright banned twice for non-compliance, you'll still make up a reason to hate them. ok.
how can you comply to those demands?
I also dont hate the Devs, i just hate everyone else working for Paradox.
half their people do everything to hurt the community and hinder the game development.

the map at start shows taiwan, manchuria, west xinjiang, and tibet as politically separated from china. you could probably make that kosher with a simple mod. call it localization, outsource the work to some chinese studio. even if some nobody reporter tweets you over it after release, act oblivious and "you'll look into it." that's how I'd make my blood money :unholy:

pdx really does suck these days but I don't see tencent as what's dragging them down. who knows what the future is but I give them credit here.

Taiwan and the east chinese puppets are very important for the game. there wouldnt be much gameplay for asia without them.

How does the Chinese media represent themselves in WW2? The Kuomintang forces did most of the heavy lifting during that time period which contributed to their defeat following the Civil War so does anyone have an insight on the movies they make out there? With all the shoehorning of Chinese media now a days, I haven't seen a movie set during the Second Sino Japanese War that doesn't involve Nanjing or other infamous war crimes.

That was 15 years ago, source on HoI 3 and 4 being banned? I believe only the original Hearts of Iron was banned, since HoI 2 and Darkest Hour weren't. Victoria 2 wasn't banned either and that had Qing China ahistorically disunited (for gameplay reasons, mods fixed this) and also had the Warlord era portrayed (disunited China again) where Mao and the CCP weren't playable and IIRC had no events for them and the Kuomintang (i.e. Sun Yat-sen's KMT) would often lose, which goes against the CCP's historiography and propaganda goals.

You can still play Mao's united China in stomping the evil Jap devils or play said Jap devils and suffer helplessly as Mao's righteous proletarians stomp you flat or whatever version of history China wants you to see.

Doesn't sound TOO much worse than how German version of HoI 3 doesn't have Hitler or any Nazi politicians in it (pictures are blacked out) and thanks to Germany's censorship no one can have the proper Nazi flag with swastikas.

thats a small fix for a big market, and they fixed that with hoi4.
