There is a small but important difference between “listening to science” and “listening to scientists” which seemingly gets lost on both sides of the political spectrum.Which scientists and when? Masks werent ok then they were. He shut down travel from China and was called racist. By scientists. Medical professionals came out and said ignore covid, protesting is more important. For a virus that at the time was already recognized as effecting black and brown people more. The group people thought at the time would be the majority of the protesters.
Left-wingers will treat the words of scientists as gospel and tend to listen to scientists without thinking twice about it. When scientists say it’s okay to protest during the pandemic it’s simply their opinion - an opinion which may not be backed by actual science but what they want to be true or what is the safe thing to say in this current political climate.
Right-wingers are at least smart enough to see through this but are sometimes so stubborn that they will disregard the science itself because of the bullshit individual scientists are saying.
As for masks most of the actual data I’ve seen points to them being effective at slowing the spread of the virus. I’m not an idiot, I had this opinion before the general consensus turned from “masks don’t work” to “masks do work” because I understood why they were saying they don’t work in the first place. It is not impossible to find out when to listen to an “expert” and when not to.
Also brown people are probably more affected by the virus simply because they act more negligently than white people in general but that’s just my intuition and also kinda beside the point.
