Am I weird in that I don't really give much of a shit about the game aspect of this whole thing? The purple haired waifuposting is the least interesting part of this to me.

I, unironically, want to know more about Shout Out UK and the people involved behind the scenes, because I bet there's something juicy there.

There's been much speculation as to why Amelia was made to look this way, and made the villain but I have an explanation I haven't heard others mention:

The canon character in the game is not male.

When I watched the Synthetic Man playthrough of it, the default character on the character selection screen was female. Amelia was supposed to represent the "bad friend" of a female player character.

Charlie is envious of Amelia's online popularity she gets from posting dank meymeys online on her social media and makes them feel like they should join in to be popular. Something that is more female coded than male coded. Female Charlie has a brighter color and Charlie is framed as uncertain, just wants to make friends, fit in, and do the right thing. Very blank slate female protagonist energy.

Amelia on the other hand wears a choker, a cooler color pallet, and starts conflict. She's not afraid of engaging in petty crime, or using social media to advocate for taboo things. She's funny, but she's also dangerous, and spreads gossip. You never once hear about her parents or her life outside of her devotion to the cause, other than she's kind of popular online despite having only you as a friend irl.

I'd bet that the story for the game was written by a woman with the perspective of young women in mind first and then did a male character skinswap. She's written as the "bad" girl, not to be confused with "bad girl". She's s social outcast who starts conflict for "no good reason" and even dresses a little evil too with that choker. She's not the good girl who has friends, teachers, and a loving family. She's not a good girl like you are.

The problem with this is that no one loves a blank slate protagonist. At least Amelia cares about something other than getting by. She gets results too with her meme profiles, and as seen in the alternate ending, when the whole school turns their back on the main character, Amelia is there to vent and relate to. She's real, genuine, edgy and rebellious in a way that makes sense. A type of woman guys love.

The constant use of "they" and slip of "he's" poke holes in this theory that the game was made female first, but outside of pure incompetence it's the only thing that makes sense to me.

Women love blank slates, because it provides a way for them to project themselves on them. Twilight was a HUGE franchise in the very late 2000s and early 2010s, there was Edward the sexy vampire and Jacob the sexy werewolf, but no one ever talked the female lead because she had zero personality, yet was what women projected themselves onto because that's how women operate. Even in non-romance works for women, you still have boring leads like Katniss Evergreen or whatever her name was because they're blank slates.

The problem with the Pathways is that they had no idea who they were supposed to appeal to, so the female blank slate protagonist idea doesn't work.

It's also just as likely that it was written by women who don't understand that men aren't motivated by the same things they are. My theory that I've mentioned before is that they believed young men with a mind receptive to nationalistic rhetoric would be put off by it if it were coming from a character who looks like a stereotypical leftist woman, not realising that most men of all political leanings actually love alt chicks, even if some may be loath to admit it.

Where's the level where you log onto /b/ and the first thing you see is a thread titled "imagine the turds"?

This is perceptive, and I also think this game was written by a woman, and like you say, a certain type of woman.
The consequences Charlie faces like the whole school excluding him/her are predominantly based around social exclusion and ejection from the in-group whereas the draw is mainly ‘being cool.’ The game was written by the kind of woman who is terrified of being outcast, the protagonist is a blank slate to self insert with.
The understanding of what drives women is pervading the whole Thing and the understanding of what drives boys is limited to very siloed things. Look at the triggers for Charlie: not getting a job becasue of a quota. That’s straight off the sort of media article about ‘why men are mad’ but it’s an isolated trigger not the whole scene.
A bunch of privileged uni educated, middle aged women are not going to understand the drivers of rage in the working class of either sex, and it shows.
It actually gives me a tiny bit of hope because o think that the whole nudge/behavioural insights thing is so incredibly pervasive and dangerous, but the people charged with enacting it seem to be worse at it than a few years back.

I don't think this pokes as many holes in the theory as it might at first glance. It's almost certain the people in charge of this project required it to be gender neutral so that it didn't exclude anyone from "learning" from it. "He's" is just "She's" without the S, a easy enough typo to make and forget about. (If you want to get schizo, if you wrote it for a female character first, made the typo for "he's", and then used ctrl f to find all uses of she and etc, you would miss that one since it wasn't a female pronoun.)
