I recently became a proud rat owner after months of doubting my abilities to care for these animals. Best purchase of my life, really
I genuinely adore these smart fellas, their unparalleled curiosity and naughty nature.
Was curious if there are any kiwis who are into rats. Feel free to share photos/stories of you little fellas here!
Also, for the love of God, can someone tell me why most rat owners I see on the internet are smelly danger-hair leftoids? Please tell me that there are normal ones, why do degens have to ruin everything (:_(

Cute rat. I've never had any rats but have known a few rat owners. Rats can be very sweet if they're well cared for and socialized. Most of the rats I've met were not very friendly but the nice ones had more normal owners. I think all 'exotic' pets tend to attract weirdos. The types of people that are more interested in owning unusual animals as an aesthetic than actually caring for them well. It sounds like you are taking it seriously and will take good care of your rat friend 👍
 
I knew a couple people that owned rats and yeah they were crazy.
but why do rats have red eyes? i don't think i know another animal with red eyes

Yeah, and the worst part is that those same weirdos who own unconventional animals as aesthetic are swarming forums and other Internet resources giving advices to new owners. Mostly completely wrong and possibly even harmful. While researching rat care I understood just how much misinformation and conflicting information there is online about rodents (and other exotic animals tbf). I wish that those "quirky autistic rat parents" would just leave the poor animals alone. But sadly the crazier the person, the stronger their desire to own animals for some reason.

It's not always complete albinism though. The rat I posted is siamese for example. There are a number of genetic mutations that can cause red, ruby or pink eyes in rats.

That's probably better since albinism often coincides with various other genetic defects. Rats are already way too short lived unfortunately.

Rats are "scary" animals and "scary" animals tend to draw in weirdos. But rats aren't as scary as tarantulas or snakes so they fall into a broader gray area and attract more people.

Rats also tend to be animals you need to research more in comparision to something like dogs or cats. I don't think most normal people know what it means when rat eyes start boggling.
 
I would love to own rats, they seem like so much fun and very personable. The only thing holding me back is their short lifespan :(

I kept hamsters in middle and high school and every time one passed away I was devastated even though I only had them for 4 or 5 years. I'm just too sensitive to deal with pet loss so frequently
 
Let them out as much as possible, play with them, let them run around (watch for wires and shit tho). Feed them well (no pizza scraps, proper feed) and don't drop them.
Because you have about a year and a hlf to two years before they start going downhill, developing tumors, losing mobility (partial loss of hind paw function is common, really fucks with their ability to climb, run and keep themselves clean).
Boys tend to get nasty shit in their balls, so you WILL have to castrate them sooner or later.
Girls get mammary gland tumors, but good vets excise those routinely as well. The only problem will be finding a vet surgeon capable of operating on a fucking rat in your locale. And couging up the cash.
Also, don't try to take them anywhere by plane, they won't be able to survive all the atmospheric pressure changes.
Other than that, rats are amazing pets, good luck with your little buggers.
