Eh, it's not just curious young people, either. The more or less accepted term is "frenzy," wherein someone new or returning to kink after a long period away gets sort of swept up in it all and looks for their next kinky fix indiscriminate of who it comes from and how safe they're being. That's typically how people get hurt.
No kink community is perfect about it (obviously), but in general, established IRL groups tend to function more as friends-with-common-interests/mentoring places while online groups tend to turn into, well, tumblr. The increased degree of anonymity combined with frenzy and little life experience and/or mental/emotional problems results in a cesspit breeding ground for predatory and unsafe behavior. Plus, on tumblr, you don't have anyone watching your back like you would in an actual "dungeon" with monitors.
Either that, or someone will get seriously hurt and learn the hard way why you shouldn't let just anyone tie you up and beat on you for kicks. You're right, though. They'll probably tone it down in a few years and slink off back into obscurity.
Of course, you know when pet-players really bother me? When they show up in full leather puppy gear to an all-ages event (like gay pride). Pal, there are literal children with their parents here. Maybe tone down your bedroom whackiness a little for the sake of the kids?
