<3333 thanks for dinner, mom, you always know just what to throw out
Do any of the cat owners in this thread have a wooden cupboard litterbox for their cats?
My poor boy has an allergy to plastic that makes him break out in bumps but my apartment is small and his box needs to be covered for smell/his digging a hole to china attempts in his litter- ie. his ears are frequently covered in bumps.I'm considering one of the wood boxes that are essentially a cupboard but I have a concern about it holding smell. Curious if there are any Kiwis that have experience with one and if they've had scent issues.

If you're going to be using wood, you want some sort of epoxy-impregnated wood so it's not as porous, meaning it should be less prone to absorbing smells. It'll still probably smell like catpiss within a month or two - that shit soaks in and fucks up EVERYTHING.
Why not a stainless steel tub?
Nature's Miracle has a disposable litter box thats usually sold in packs and is cheap starting at 9.99 if you go through chewy. It's made with baking soda and is supposed to protect against odors. If you pair it with a good walnut based litter you won't smell anything at all. I haven't had any experience using wood, but Varg is absolutely right. A stainless steel tub would work good too.
Starting to think I have to self make.maybe if I epoxy the inside and have it higher up it'll work. I clean his box every day but my experience with a wood garbage box tells me it'll hold smell. Sigh.
I have been looking for metal but haven't found one that meets my needs it needs a top, certain amount of depth, and considering my cats digging and covering habits I have concerns about sound. He'd dig all the litter out without a top.
I've never come across a steel tub of a compact size but with height and depth for my needs.
Sad posting, but here we go:
One of my cats had to be put down yesterday. His last day on earth fucking sucked ... He suffered a lot. In a span of 12-16 hours, his body was just breaking down, and we found out through an x-ray that it was either due to a tumor or an enlarged heart (either possibility was grim, so we opted against a biopsy at that point and just wanted the suffering for him to end). It all happened so fast; he was acting completely normal until that 12-16 hour window. He never missed a meal until his final day.
This cat was supposed to get semi-annual, routine bloodwork done back in late March ... Alas, COVID and "Stay at Home" orders happened, and we were told to stay home if the cat was up to date with his shots (and he was). I can't help but wonder how much better things could have turned out if it had been detected earlier. Sure, we would have had to put him down anyway, but I don't think he would have suffered so much had we known even a week before everything hit the fan.
The hardest part was watching our buddy suffer like that. My husband and I had always hoped that whenever the cats got back from the vet with some bad news, that we'd make sure the cat was euthanized before things started to hurt (and so we could spoil them with all the food they are normally not supposed to eat, lol). That obviously didn't happen, and it breaks my heart, and it makes saying goodbye that much harder.
This is also my husband and I's first time mourning a pet (as we both didn't have pets growing up). It's a really bad feeling, y'all.
Our cats were adopted back in 2011; we have had them since they were babies, basically. I know it's odd to call a cat a "good boy," but really ... Both our cats are the goodest boys. Most affectionate cats ever. Everyone who has spent time with them has fallen in love. When I broke the sad news to my parents, even my mom (a self-proclaimed cat hater) cried for our kitty.
This cat was a loud purring and snoring machine, and his favorite things were food, laps, belly rubs, and his Disney Princess blanket (which was an odd gift I received a few years ago, but he took to it like crazy, so we kept it. Haha). He hated thunderstorms and required a "thunder buddy" during them. Not once did he ever scratch me, bite me, or swat at me. He was quirky as hell and hilarious, too.
I couldn't have asked for better first pets, really. I already miss him a lot, but luckily I have another wonderful cat to cuddle with while I'm sad right now.
