Phobias and Nightmares Thread - Things that go bump in the dark

I'm very claustrophobic and elevators make me uncomfortable.

Emetophobia is a thing. Got a lot better as I got older, though- little kids puking and movies/fetish/YouTube stunt scenes don't really bother me anymore. Adults are another story but grown-ass people barfing in public doesn't happen often after the twenties are over. Well, at least not outside of amusement parks and concerts.

I don't much like giant structures like dams or big bridges, either. It's not exactly a phobia, but size dissonance makes me pretty fucking uncomfortable looking at stuff like the clock in Mecca.

sleep paralysis, i used to think i was possesed until i googled the symptoms

I too am afraid an aquatic monstrosity is occupying the small pond that is slightly too murky to see the bottom of. I cannot swim in any water that I can't see all the way through, and yes same thing with Vidya to the point where even Abzu made me uneasy, and that game is all about chilling with friendly wildlife. I'll ride boats for days but you wouldn't catch me dead in that fucking water.

I get sleep paralysis as well but never nightmares with it. It's more an annoyance than anything.

EDIT: Almost forgot. The nightmares I DO have tend to involve me getting attacked from behind by something I can't see.

Im glad im not the only one who has nightmares of being forced to go to school again for whatever reason. Missing credits etc.

Anyone have dreams where yiu think youre awake and starting your day but nope still fucking asleep. Id consider those nightmares

I have those same dreams where I'm either back in school or have to go school even though I have job that often doesn't need me till the afternoon or night time. Even then I have dreams where I'm late for work and wake up thinking I real am gonna be late. But that's nothing compared to when I wake up and think I'm awake but it turns out I. Still sleeping, yeah sleep paralysis is no joke it's terrifying especially when my brain is screaming to wake up and then j think to myself...", Oh God I died in my sleep!" And this is it? This what it's like? There's both no afterlife but at the same time my brain is still awake?!" Definition of the saying "I have no mouth and I must scream"

I remember as a kid, I got metroid fusion and that shit is traumatizing. Wouldn't surprise me if the game helped me build my fear of the deep ocean and being stalked.

What the fuck Nintendo.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget this part

Seeing some giant objects or structures underwater freaks me the fuck out. Pics like these are my nightmare fuel.

I also hate large bodies of water (especially if it's murky), like some kiwis above have said. I loved swimming in local rivers and lakes as a kid, but now the thought terrifies me. I wasn't even close to drowning at any point or anything like that, this thing just clicked and I've never swam in water since.

A lot of people mentioned sleep paralysis, and it's such a fascinating thing to me. I constantly had such dreams during childhood (most often the nightmares featured some entity entering the apartment while I was there alone, at night and with no electricity) until I figured out it ALWAYS happened when I slept on my back. It's also often accompanied by this extremely unpleasant suffocating feeling, like someone's jammed a finger in-between your ribs, what's up with that.
Oh, and you might like the documentary on the subject called "The Nightmare". It has artistic recreations of some reported sleep paralysis dreams, some of which hit really close to home. Here's an illustratory shot:

One of the most deadly watery areas in the world is something called the Blue Hole in the Red Sea. It isn't very deep and it's not murky, but very clear. Because of this, though, it seems to confuse divers, who run out of oxygen or otherwise blunder. Hundreds of divers have died there.

One recorded his own death.

I have pedophobia and agoraphobia

I don't often have much for nightmares but the ones I do have usually revolve around loved ones dying.

I refuse to go into deep water because I'm scared I'll see bodies if I go under and pull myself up. Stems from Katrina. Saw too much shit back then and it still fucks me up.

I get agoraphobic when I try to sleep, even a too large room will cause me to sleep fitfully. I used to be paralyzingly arachnophobic, I went out and bought a tarantula to get myself inured to it. Tarantulas are kind of derpy, I still avoid getting bitten but it's hard to be scared of the little idiot who got her toe claw stuck to the roof of her enclosure and you had to save her life.

The underwater structure thing reminds me of a friend's phobia. He has a fear of seeing large planets and objects in the sky like this:

No idea why, I think it's really cool.
Also your second picture creeps me out because it reminds me of the Regenerators from RE4.
lately i've been experiencing the sensation of falling a lot.
This usually happens if you consume caffeine or sugar before bed. I don't remember why though.

I was a very imaginative kid and also pretty neurotic (I still am tbh) so I would have the most terrible nightmares about inescapable monsters or getting trapped in places. I'd wake up paralyzed with fear and huggin' my blankie for dear life. Kind of suprised that I didn't ever develop a fear of sleeping in general because I had so many nightmares as a kid. My kindergarten teacher told me you stop having them when you turn 6. Nope. I don't really have them any more thankfully.

I have a few phobias but the weirdest is snails. I was almost force-fed one as a kiddo and that was some traumatizing shit for a 3 year old. I don't even like the empty shells.

I can fly now but only seem to do it when there's monsters, which I now view with contempt since they can't do anything. I haven't even had one of those in years.

I'm not gonna lie, I totally mean to freak you out but apparently common garden snails run a risk of carrying a brain eating parasite, so you being afraid of eating one was probably for the best. iirc there was even an article hosted in a&h from a guy who ate one on a dare and died.
I have what I'd call thalassaphobia (on top of just being fucking anxious in general). Which led to me never learning how to swim, which led to an increased fear of drowning, which led to intense thalassaphobia. And as a child my dad loved to canoe and shit and would take us kids along by force. He's a total autist because all the screaming and crying just made him yell at us to shut up instead of taking his canoe trips alone. Funny thing is, heights only freak me out because I get the call of the void.
