with the rise of streaming costs their has been a growing movement of people returning to DVDs and other forms of physical media so i made this thread to discuss it

I have a pretty good collection of DVDs and blu-rays, even VHS tapes. I like getting rare stuff though. If something has no review online and no clips or anything on YouTube I will track down a copy.

Does this mean I get to bitch about blurays? I swear any time I see a bluray it's so fucking expensive.
Then there's the fucking region locking so now I have to go buy an expensive modded bluray player just to play shit from overseas that isn't sold over here.

God I fucking hate society, but also buy them since DVD quality sucks and the more people that buy blurays the more of that specific movie is produced on bluray and more people will sell it overtime which means cheaper prices due to the just mentioned high quantity of that bluray.

Do you have a source for that claim?

I just buy blurays if I can't find shit I want to pirate in decent quality and then share it myself, outside of a private tracker, because fuck you fags gatekeeping theft.

Remember when there was that short period of time where movies came with a code to download a digital copy in shit ass quality?

It's a shame that (some, vanishingly small) amount of decent streaming original shows will never have a bluray release and be trapped in webdl quality forever.

Might as well ask this question here since it seems appropriate

Is there an absolute best way to clean DVDs and remove the scratches?

I mostly sail the high seas, but I do own a large collection of movies. Laserdisc, DVDs, Blurays. A few 4k Blurays. Vinyl and CDs too. I mostly just get shit from boutique labels like Vinegar Syndrome or Severin now of days. I do occasionally get shit from Kino Lorber.

I usually just take disks that need to be cleaned to mom & pop shops with a disc cleaner hardware.

I don't get into physical media much because to me the price is unjustifiable. I use streaming services as a means of finding new music (thanks to the algo & other people's playlists). Then I pirate everything I like in as high quality as I can find. If there's a whole album I really really like I'll buy it on vinyl, although I haven't done so in years (other than one specific release that doesn't exist anywhere except on vinyl).

I wish PC games still got big box releases. I only buy physical copies for my Nintendo games. I have everything and more "backed up" as ROMs of course, but it's not the same as real hardware.

For music I mostly pirate and horde digitally on my NAS, but if I love an album and it suits the medium I'll buy a vinyl copy.

I really like to get 4K UHD Blurays for movies. There is something about putting a disc in the player that makes it worth consooming.

For books, it's physical or nothing. Audiobooks are cool but hard to pirate.

PSA: Buy a Bluray/DVD player and as many discounted Bluray discs as you can. Right now. It's only a matter of time before the Instagram/TikTok hivemind latches onto this and drives up the price of players and discs. Imagine: A $2 Bluray on eBay will suddenly become $30 because some thot on TikTok announced to her brain-dead followers she is not streaming anymore and will only watch physical movies.

I stopped collecting for a while, ended up getting rid of lot of blu rays I wouldn't watch again. But over the last year really have been into collecting 4k blu rays.

This year has a lot of good stuff coming to 4k
Seven
Withnail and I
Long Good Friday
Team America
North By Northwest
Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid
Purple Rain
Blue Velvet
Le Samourai

Bumping. Been on a wild tear with physical media collecting lately. I've always had a fondness for VHS because I find the grainy analogue aesthetic nostalgic and comforting, but lately I've been getting into collecting DVDs as well. I don't own a blu-ray player otherwise I'd probably be opting for those over most anything else. Planning to snag one once I find it cheap enough in the wild.

The primary reason behind my preference for DVD/blu-ray is the inclusion of bonus features, especially filmmaker/actor commentary. Generally most online rips are for only the film itself, with maybe multiple audio channels for foreign dubs. I'm a fan of movies, therefore I like to know how they're made. A really good commentary that I reference a lot is Scott Derrickson's for Sinister. It's full of tips for technique and he explains in depth why certain shots are framed the way they are and why things happen the way they do.

Anyhow, I snagged a bunch of stuff recently, mostly run of the mill and mass produced. Highlights for me are VHS copies of Wizards and Fire & Ice.

Also made a contact with a local thrift store. Gave the manager my phone number, she's going to set aside all of the physical media that's donated so I can go through it. Apparently they get so much in that they just end up throwing everything away. Planning on volunteering there soon, just to have first crack at what they get in (and to help out our community, of course).

There's a very useful site called DoesItPlay? which tracks 8th generation+ physical console games and whether they can be played offline / require no online download.

Post physical cops
The only one I haven't played was MGS2; what am I in for?
