To be fair, here's the difference between a few variations of what he said was said, according to Google, I don't speak spic:
"He's not my boyfriend" = "Él no es mi novio."
"He's my boyfriend" = "Él es mi novio."
"No, he's not my boyfriend". = "No, él no es mi novio."
"No, he's my boyfriend" = "No, él es mi novio."

I'd say easy to get mixed up when you don't speak the language and you're listening to a native speaker talking naturally.
