I’ve always consider the trad cath shit Ralph fetishizes and fails at so badly the bare minimum of being an adult. Things like a strong marriage and financial stability before having kids, not having multiple illegitimate kids, not having multiple arrests/convictions, nor a career that requires begging or humiliating myself online etc… were all bog standard decent adult shit to me, but to Gunt it’s totally aspirational fantasies he will never achieve. He probably think everyone is like him, a hypocritical dirtbag that just fronts as something better online.

I actually think Gunt struggles to fathom non-white trash humans because I don’t think he’s ever been around many. He assumes everyone is just hypocritical, lying dirtbag like himself. Obviously all the things he knows about humans, that aren’t white trash, comes from TV shows and movies.

He should have begged Nick Reiketa to mentor him so he had some point of reference besides Don Draper or Tony Soprano for how men outside the trailer park behave.

What acquaintances he has are mostly ghosts in his computer. I think it was mostly his childhood with Sandra that gave him his white trash experience. Once Ronnie left little Ethan met her boyfriends, got left with various babysitters in West Memphis, was around neighbors, etc… Once he moved with Sandra to Virginia as her health declined and she stopped going to bars to head bang his social world got as small as his ill Medicare mom’s. (I find it ironic that Ralph calls Jim Mr Medicare because Jim is 25 years too young for Medicare, Medicaid pays for Evan’s care and Ralph grew up on it, and Sandra depended on Medicare - so again the insults are all pure projection)

It says a lot that the only IRL ppl that have interacted with Ralph in the past few years are solely internet ppl, three of which were women, two of which he got to come to his mom’s house. The only other person is failed political candidate Sisco who has to drive over from Keyser WV for Ralph’s epic one friend cook-outs.

It’s why these trips are so important to him - it’s really the only time he leaves his miserable ghetto u-haul blanket cave and is around other people.
