This is extremely true. I am a native Spanish speaker from central America and when I work in Europe, even in Spain, I don't bother as I have the wrong dialect and it's better to use my English to not piss off Spaniards.

That said, if you pick up any Spanish in the US, it's Chicano, so you just come off as an ignorant Gringo in Mexico if you try.
