Almost all rehabs have a shitty success rate. It rarely takes the first time. I'd give Ralph an even lower chance, like as close to zero as you can get without actually being zero. Nothing short of Jesus can save him.

It's in the high 20%'s and low 30%'s. Even the good one's have low rates. There's several circumstances that prevent a junkie on a case by case basis and it does appear that Ralph would easily fall through a recovery process. When the walls of the Rehab go down and he has to process the outside world he'd fall back into his vices. Every time he suffers any health injury or pain he uses something.

His decision to tell himself "Imma die before I'm 40, go to hell aylawgs" put him past the point of any meaningful recovery. Even if he were try and do it out of spite would end in failure. Like how he swore to God he'd lose weight.

The ultimate reason for the perpetual absolute state of Ralph is genetic. A quick look at Sandra and you can easily tell the hold hag loved her medicine cabinet more than she did Ralph's father, she also probably derived far more pleasure from it than the boozebag father could ever achieve in all four inches of inebriated inbred glory.

The problem is in Ralph's bones. He hasn't the capability to get himself into a state of functionality, because he's never learned what being functional is and even if he did his genes wouldn't allow it. His parents both died miserable pill popping drug addicts with a retard and ingrate child, Ralph is just completing the circle.

While I wouldn’t doubt Sandra liked her pills an awful lot (and since Medicaid paid for them she had quite the selection) and a drinky drink but good old Ronnie was the hardcore alcoholic. Ralph gets his ugly mug from Sandra and his predisposition to addictions and mental illness from Ronnie.

That's possibly the dumbest analogy you could have chosen.
AA wouldn't kill Ralph, it would only have no effect or a positive outcome. In Ralph's life, a 12% chance of kicking a habit is better than his current trajectory.
This is Ralph though so even if it was closer to 90% he'd fuck it up.

He better be damned careful with Ambien. Too much of that shit, which you know he'll take, and you become a somnambulist, i.e. a sleepwalker. And you can find yourself in places or situations and you have no idea how you got there. Not a good replacement for xannieberries.

I know it's gay to reply to one's own post, but I just wanted to add that a) one can be a sleepwalker even he takes Ambien as prescribed (an old friend of mine had that issue), and b) being a somnambulist (combined with being Ethan Ralph) in Mexico could be particularly extremely dangerous.

I personally know dozens of people who got clean and sober in 12 Step programs and have stayed clean and sober. The difference between them and Ralph is that they were completely done and wanted to stop living in the hell they knew was their own making.

But Ralph thinks his hell was made by others, and that he is the victim in all this. That’s not a guy who’s ready to stop living like a dumb dickhead. He’s going to die with a drink in his hand and a scant drop of blood in his pillstream.

I'm a soulless, hateful bastard, so I always wondered what would happen if he got his hands on some phenazepam, even though I know that would require minimal effort that he would never go through. It'd be like the worst of Ambien and the worst of Xanax, with a 18-hour half-life that stretches into two days with the (fucking unknown) active metabolites. And they sell it as bulk powder. And of all the benzos I know of off the top of my head, it causes the most, longest lasting anterograde amnesia.

I've read enough horror stories about "Russian Xannies" to really wonder what that arc would bring.

ambien combined with alcohol and obesity will be the death of him. all it will take is for him to fall asleep pass out flat on his back one night ... his fat tongue will occlude his airway and he'll go into respiratory depression. without someone there to hear the agonal respiration as his body struggles to breathe, or to notice the prolonged periods of apnea, he'll go into respiratory arrest and die without ever waking up.

It also depends on what kind of rehab. There are things like the Salvation Army runs that are basically free. They generally require a time and work commitment (180 days) that a lot of people aren't willing to put up with.

There are also people who quit entirely on their own, just having realized that they're sick of what their life has become. And AA, pitiable success rate or not, is entirely free. Even with a 12 percent success rate if you stick to it and actually mean it, you'll probably eventually succeed.

It's just that the majority of people who repeatedly fail rehab really aren't serious about it at all, and there's really nothing even the best recovery method can do to defeat an addict who just really wants to keep doing drugs.

I've always heard the 12% statistic parroted, but aren't a lot of people court mandated into AA to begin with? I could imagine that skewing the statistic.
I'm sure it's much better if you could somehow ascertain people there who honestly want to get and serious about getting sober
