Pinball - I think this is the closest place to relevant to post this.

I love Theatre of Magic. "YOU MUST CONCENTRATE!" Gah, fuck you, I'm trying to shoot for the captive ball but all of a sudden my sense of timing has died. But in a good way.

Last time I played one IRL the eject on the basement hatch for when multiball starts was slightly wonked and it would fire all the balls straight down the middle. And the saver was turned off. Yay.

Sigh. I can't wait for us to be off lockdown. Last time I played IRL pinball was 2019 (I don't have space in my flat to put one, more's the pity). There was a place in [town] near me where they had a Ghostbusters Pro, a Star Wars Trilogy (actually a good game but the recent trend for HD screens where the DMD used to be is distracting and Yoda lecturing me when I outlane gets very annoying; at least on Trek you can slap both flippers during such a lecture for an easter egg of 10M. "THANK YOU MR DATA!"), an AC/DC Luci Premium (excellent game that, I remember there was a time it even managed to break the WMS circlejerk on IPDB's top ten) and a Gorgar. The only pinball cool enough to have a heavy metal song written about it:

Daily reminder that emulators exist.

Getting mame and vp to talk to one another is such a horrible process. Most people would be fine sailing the high seas and finding pinball arcade seasons 1 to 7

I had a Fish Tales machine in the movie theatre I worked as a kid. Never knew until recently how coveted it is lol.

We had swapped it out for a Batman '89 table that I honestly enjoyed more, but I've never been a serious wizard.

EM Pinball tech here. Got a soft spot for bally zipper flipper games personally. Dont know what it is about older machines but i love them. Attached are a few games i currently own. I really need to finish up some more personal projects.

Holy shit I was just thinking about those old bowling games yesterday lol.

Love the stuffies.

Those EM games are so difficult to find in good condition. I can fix up the mechanics and enjoy myself but honestly I hate fixing cabs and can't be bothered most of the times.

Awesome pinball cabs there. Former arcade op myself, never got to keep much after I stepped away from it all beyond a few buttons, sticks, and switches. Miss my old cabinets.

I find the difficulty really changes from game to game. The 4 player gottliebs from the 70s can be a beast at times and dont even get me started on some of the later Bally stepper units. But some of the games from the 40-50s are super simple and can be a nice day long project since you have verry little going on. Especially in flipperless games.

Thanks man. Glad to see all the love on here. You would be surprised what games you can find out in the wild still. Keep your eyes peeled for those cabs.

Just recently finally got a cabinet to tool on. Have a shell of an asteroids cabinet. No original monitor, control panel, or PCB, but the original art on the side and the marquee are in great condition. Still working out exactly what I'm going to have done with it, probably something to play dial/trackball based things using GroveyMAME on some type of CRT.
Luck willing, I really want a Sega Astro or something close with a vertical monitor setup for shumps. Then my autism can be truly realized.

I've played real life pinball a total of 3 times in my life, all of which ended with me losing within like 30 seconds at my hockey rink after practice. After that I just played Metal Slug 3 and MvC2 with my quarters instead of wasting them and playing Space Cadet Pinball on my shitty old brick computer at home.

Sounds about right. Sadly most places dont take care of there machines making them almost unplayable. But if you find a good working machine you can get good enough to win free games and sit there for well over an hour pn just a dollar.

that said pinbot exists to steal your money no matter how well maintained from the left drain. Im staring at his fucking face right now from across my den, fucking thief prick.
Pinbot has always been a bit of a wild game. I usually have to give it some extra pitch when i level him. And sometimes serious insert cupping can make the ball even more wild.

Didn't mean to necro this thread, but I thought I'd sniff around and see if someone hadn't already made a thread for pinball.

My local pinball league is in a bit of a tough spot with our current venue. They started off as a pinball bar/barcade but have changed their business model to more of a college kid club that has the odd pinball machine. It's pretty frustrating that the owner has let all of his machines fall into disrepair in favor of catering to sugary drinks to college kids, but I understand the financial reasons why the owner would shift focus.

That being said, the local players have been working on a plan to make their own venue and have promised that their personal games would be available to this new location.
I have the privilege of owning a machine myself, but don't have a whole lot of experience in maintaining a vintage machine. Are there are reliable resources to helping a newbie in maintain an older machine?

For sure, thanks!

It's a bit of a drag that we're being forced to make our own space, but kind of exciting too. Most of the games that the local guys have are on the older side, and those games have so much charm and character to them. You couldn't make a Swords of Fury or Grand Lizard these days, since the market is a lot smaller than it used to be and these things aren't cheap. That being said, there have been some super good games to come out of the current era. Keith Elwin has produced some really fun and interesting games; Iron Maiden and Jurassic Park are a ton of fun to play. Scott Danesi has made some fun games too.

Oh rad, you'll have to post progress photos of your EM machines.
LIONMAN! LIONMAN!

I really want one of those. I kinda think the late 1980s alphanumeric era games have a certain charm that the 1990s budget busters don't have.

No doubt! They had some many different ideas and themes during the Alphanumeric era, I really wish Dungeons and Dragons hadn't gotten such a limited release because I love that machine. The 'Magic Save' was a really interesting idea, and the music totally slaps.
