I've always been a fan of WCO and it has a pretty big library, but the domains go down and come back every once in awhile so it's best to keep your eye on that.
 
So, Rom Hustler has gotten a stick up its ass and now requires a "premium" log in for practically every ROM they have in order to download them. I can find practically every ROM I am after by looking through random websites, but is there another site that has a comparable library to Rom Hustler so I can just go to one place?

Vimm's lair has a pretty high level of completeness to its library.
 
I've used Myrient in the past, they've got a great archive of ROMs for certain consoles. I haven't looked around the rest of their directory since I mainly use it for PSP/PS2 ISOs.

Unfortunately Vimm also got slapped a year or two ago by DMCA notices and is lacking a lot of famous titles as a result. It's a good collection, but you have to supplement with another archive (I second the myrient recommendation) if you want everything.
 
I think a major reason why a lot of these ROM sites go down or require accounts is not just because of DMCA takedowns, but because of the costs of server storage space since some of the ROMs for later-gen systems are huge and so it gets really expensive for a lot of places to maintain huge libraries like this.

One place I used to go to a lot that has been in existence for years was CoolRom. They technically still exist, but they stopped hosting ROMs not that long ago.

Internet Archive is a great place to start anymore, especially for older stuff. Even more surface web sites like MyAbandonware are pretty solid. Most ROM sites are good for this as well as long as you have decent adblock and virus scanners intact.

Rezi is a good search engine to find specific links to pirated games and has a lot of titles, but doesn't have everything so I'd tread with caution if you're looking for something ultra specific.

The wave of handheld emulation over the last few years probably didn't help. Every gaming YouTuber ends up shilling Gameboy replicas and causing people to swarm to those sites and put a bigger spotlight on them.
 
I would be perfectly willing to buy a lot of these older console-based games if they existed in an online repository similar to Steam. Unfortunately, companies like Nintendo and Konami are notoriously short-sited in this regard and do not seem to give a damn about many of their past titles or even the very idea of game preservation in general.

Anyway, some Amiga games are REALLY hard to find, and getting their emulators to run can be a pain in the ass.

Just pull a copy of that Google Drive. I reckon it’s a fairly complete archive of every major title before the PlayStation.

Why wouldn’t you just get an iPad Mini and one of those phone controllers? Build your own Switch/Steam Deck, and RetroArch or Steam Link to play the games.

I bought a 32 GB Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 for $200, a 512 GB SD Card from Microcenter for $40, an 8BitDo SN30 for $40, and PPSSPP Gold with Google Rewards survey money and it makes my international flights for work more enjoyable. RetroArch can't read off SD card without a bunch of effort after Android 11 so I don't use it. Stand alone Emus are more up to date in the app store and have access to the SD Card. I also have a ton of movies and shows on it and use VLC player.

Verdict: Would recommend this route for emulation.

Yeah, that sounds pretty sweet too. An SD card is going to be cheaper than an iPad with extra storage, and an android tablet is fine since these games don’t take much processing power to emulate anyway. I guess your solution wouldn’t be as nice to draw on, but if you’re not actually into drawing missing Procreate and Pencil doesn’t matter anyway. My retro game collection is like 60GB, so I load it from my NAS over VPN. I got a cellular iPad specifically so I wouldn’t be so reliant on having local storage.

I’m surprised RetroArch doesn’t let you load from SD on Android. On iOS it has support for way more esoteric things, like loading ROMs from an SMB server through WireGuard.

Yeah I strongly dislike how much Apple charges for larger flash media devices because it's essentially the same as a restaurant charging $2.95 for a fucking soda when the bag of syrup is so cheap.

It's dog shit to draw on but I have no artistic ability so it doesn't bother me.

Since my use case is being stuck on airplanes or at airports for 10+ hours, it works great for me. I haven't finished building my 30 TB home server yet but my intention is to be able to store what I need and remotely stream or download from it if need be.

I'm likely stuck on an older version of Android due to the tablets age but apparently RetroArch is a red headed stepchild on the Play Store due to unupdated cores.
