really retarded when sites like OMGWTFNZBs or WDMA trackers forbid members from using the site's name publicly, like word spreads through the grapevine but also reverse psychology dictates telling someone not to do something often results in them doing it. guess common sense isnt common when it comes to people who administrate piracy sites lmao.

It's like Fight Club. The first two rules were you do not talk about fight club, but each session had more members attending. The rule is applicable in the sense of "don't tell anyone who might squeal", but the reverse psychology aspect makes it also a recruitment method.

Thanks I guess but none of the sites work and if they do work they sound like pigs for some reason.

I guess piracy is truly dead.
It's more like piracy is the same as it's been for the last 25 years, and piracy's retarded little brother finally got put down.

Next you have Bill Gates. Talking about how you really don't want people being anonymous online, just saying whatever they want.
Bill Gates has been a fucking cancer on the computing hobby since time immemorial so why am I not completely surprised.

It started with attacking the homebrew computer club, now it ends with attempting to tear down a fundamental tenant of the Internet just so people don’t say the nigger word and talk about how he used to fly on the Epstein jet.

Oh don’t forget his Trusted Computing side quest in the mid-2000s that paved the way for this Digital ID, infinity DRM, and “drink verification can and do the goydance” bullshit.

Yes. Re-encode everything. h265 encoding is substantially higher-quality at lower bitrates. You'll cut the size of your collection in half and not be able to notice unless you're autistic enough to check with a magnifier tool to look for differences. Not only does everything out there play h265 now without difficulty, but the reduced bandwidth requirements actually make it easier for more devices to play the stuff since it takes less data to get the same picture to the screen (so shitty wifi reception or crappy internet links are less likely to hose playback).
rencoding a rencode degrades the picture quality. if youre ripping BDs then yeah rencoding to h265 is a great space saver. caveat being that you use the cpu to rencode for quality vs space saving. nvidia's h265 encoders are good but limited. i'm a snob and the pixelated shimmer effect in low bitrate encodes bother me to no end. wasn't a problem when you can go buy the bd for $3-5 and rip em myself but these days with streaming... stream fab is great but its probablt a keylogger since it can monitor your clipboard.

I've been having issues with the installers lately. When I run the installer, it sits at a low-number percentage -- 16.6%, in a recent case -- and doesn't move, even after letting it sit for hours.
I had this problem with a few games and what fixed it was;

1) download every file, even the language ones.
2)install every file, even the language ones
3) Verify game files before installation, then do it again
4) Hope and pray.

It took 4 hours and 3 attempts to install FF7 remake. Played it for 15 minutes and uninstalled it, but still, some take a while. Since FF7 I double verify and ive had no problems since.

Worst Koreans still at it. This wasn't exactly unforeseeable. They also mention Google's latest Android idiocy in their GitHub (now archived). Another project is also claiming to be under threat from others allegedly impersonating them, and the former Tachiyomi project (direct link), putting them into their sights just like how some very popular "influencers" would post stupid things like "Tired of paying for #PLATFORM? Download this app now!". Kakao's twitter page (whose posts are almost entirely only about "piracy") isn't gravedancing on it yet, but probably will given they always do.

Also, during the Sony & Kadokawa buyout talks (which ended with Sony getting more Kadokawa shares), Kakao was also interested in purchasing Kadokawa, and so was Chinese tech giant Tencent.

And Kakao being one of the chaebols in Worst Korea gives them a lot of power, although they're a lot smaller than the likes of Hyundai, LG, SK, and Samsung.

They still have their hands in lots of industries, including a payment app (Kakao Pay), and their messenger app (Kakao Talk) is one of the most popular ones in South Korea.

Fuck Jewtendo. Charging full price for NES/SNES games from 30 years ago and requiring you to re-purchase them on every new console, pay-2-win bullshit and exclusive content locked behind Amiibos, overpriced peripherals with shittier quality than knockoffs I can get off Shein for 1/4 the price when they break (which they will), infinite shovelware of the worst kind (up to the point of having the actual brass balls to charge $20 for fucking Solitaire in the eShop in year of our Lord 2025), etc aren't printing them enough money?

Until relatively recently I was the type of sometimes-pirate that would purchase a game to use the online features on console if I liked it enough. My patience with Nintendo was wearing thin for a while but fucking with people who buy used Switch games, finding the coders writing open source Nintendo emulators (that don't even include any software or the firmware/prodkeys needed to work) and stapling their nutsacks to the wall when they never made a dime, and harassing people who make free fangames and mods (that are usually just downloaded as patches which themselves contain only original content) managed to thoroughly piss me off. Not only do I now refuse altogether to play any Nintendo games I can't pirate, but anytime I want to pirate any game period, I make a point of checking if the game has ever been ported to a Nintendo console, and if it has, I go out of my way to pirate that version specifically. And you bet your ass I seed my torrents. I'd argue I'm still being less of a petty bitch than Jewtendo spending millions to fuck with hobbyists. Get bent, you sleazy kikes.

Its 1000x easier today, you have entire subreddits (where zoomers live) telling you where to go. You also have repackers. Only thing confusing about piracy today is if you are a mobile fag and dealing with cracking APKs; I doubt most zoomers can install and patch revanced. They also don't have to look for no cd cracks.

It's more complicated, but not exactly more difficult. All the retard-friendly guides that do most of the work for you are great, and the sheer variety of obtainable content is far beyond what 90s or even early 00s me could've imagined.

However...

I didn't have to worry about fumbling around Russian language websites, exhaustively testing for malware (cracks/keygens consistently throwing false positives makes this especially annoying), fiddling around with advanced graphics settings for game emulators using trial and error to see if I can stop crashes or make it not perform like shit, running into dozens of dead ends after shit has been nuked off every DDL site, guessing which "download" button is real and which will shove a remote access trojan up your ass, trying to blindly perform whatever arcane voodoo ritual that sometimes gets 1fichier to fucking work, waiting forever for the 1 torrent seeder to log the fuck back in, etc back then, either. Far more straightforward to pop in a cassette tape and sit around waiting to press "record" when the right song came on the radio and (hoping the DJ didn't yell retard catchphrases over too much of the beginning), buy a second VCR to copy rented VHS tapes basically the same way, or smuggle a camcorder into a movie theater and sell copies made with your dual-VCR setup. The only obstacle was the splashscreen at the beginning where the FBI tells you not to.

I'm not quite enough of an old fuck to remember this, but apparently pirates used to copy vinyl records by pouring silicone over a real record and popping it out once dry to create a mold, then filling it with wax or resin. Once that dried, you'd pop it out, trim off the excess, stick on a homemade label, and you'd have a playable copy. Depending on how good you were at this, sound quality could range anywhere from pretty close to total dogshit. Apparently 8 track piracy was a huge problem because it wasn't that hard to do en masse and you could find them at just about any flea market, convenience store, or truck stop but I don't know anything else about it. I'd have to ask my dad.

Edit: Any good general-purpose paywall bypassing scripts for articles (not specifically academic ones, just stuff like news, recipes, tech, and whatever)? bypass-paywall-clean is kill. For a while it was still available off some .ru github alternative but I can't even find that anymore either.

Speaking of which does anyone know if Dropbox and Google Drive etc give a fuck if you put up pirated movies and only share extremely selectively? I often want to pop stuff up to share with family/friends but worry they'll ban my account for it. I had a web hosting account get banned because they simply detected mp3 files like 2 decades ago so I'm careful.

Asking in the OSS thread about closed source demon companies because I'm a Chad.
https://gofile.io/home for oneoffs just use this
What I don't get it is why I some people censor usernames in screenshots from X, Facebook etc. What's the point? Those sites are indexed by Google, so you can easily find those posts and accounts in most cases. The posts are public, this isn't a super secret private club on Tor.
Holdover from social media site regimes where you get banned for harassment

TorrentFreak: DNS Provider Quad9 Sees Piracy Blocking Orders as “Existential Threat” (archive)
Non-profit DNS resolver Quad9 reports that legal battles over pirate site blocking have become an "existential threat" to its service. In a recent blog post, the Swiss foundation argues that while tech giants like Google and Cloudflare can absorb the legal and engineering costs, smaller organizations cannot. The warning comes after Quad9 decided not to represent itself at a French court due to a lack of financial resources.

This seems important, gonna put it here first, you can run with it if you want.

Don’t buy that plastic crap. Mod your switch and dump every amiibo to an SD card. It’ll make Nintendo AND fat greasy neckbeards trying to sell them for an 800% markup sad.

It’s your moral duty.

I'm proud to say I've never purchased an Amiibo in my life. That was my first line in the sand with Jewtendo if I remember right. Chapped my ass a bit as a compulsive 100%-er but I refuse to fill my living space with superfluous consoomer crap (I'll cop to one moment of temptation though, the yarn ball Yoshis are so fucking cute). If the mood does strike me to buy some stickers or a shirt or something with Jewtendo characters on it I usually either make my own or find a Chinese bootleg version for a reasonable price. Never bothered modding my Switch since I don't mind playing right on my laptop anyway, but good to know you can do that.

Tangential, but I partially blame the "retro game collector" autists artificially inflating the price of any and all ancient Nintendo games, consoles etc for chasing a fad and forever ruining the secondhand market hoarding games that the vast majority of them aren't even interested in playing. Seriously, up until 2004ish I used to fairly regularly hit the flea market and pick out a half dozen NES/SNES games I'd never played (or often even heard of) to blindly check out - if they sucked, no harm done, because there were always a shitload and they usually didn't cost more than $2 each, maybe $5 tops. (However, fuck Mario's Time Machine in particular. Sounded like it should've been fucking awesome, but I wound up with one of the shittiest trivia games I've ever played. It was boring even by the standards of "edutainment." Slapping Mario and Luigi sprites on the screen there to tease people was just cruel and I still want my dollar back.) Was always a laugh to come across some ridiculous borderline unplayable Russian bootleg cart too, which I probably haven't seen since the 90s. A few years later the "SMB/Duck Hunt" carts nobody could give away were going for $50. Without this phenomenon, I don't think Nintendo would've become quite so bold with trying to bring the hammer down on romhackers tinkering with SNES games or banning people for playing used/borrowed Switch games (had resellers/price gougers not killed the secondhand market already with Gamestop or whoever refusing to sell the few used Nintendo games they have for less than like 90% original retail price anyway).
