Thanks shitloads for reminding me of my favorite comic that, after a perfect ending, was revived and butchered by this fuckwit:

She saw a bi character who was in a relationship with a woman - a relationship that took years to come to fruition - and turned her into a horny lesbian who just wants to fuck constantly. Fuck you, Tini Howard. Fuck you very much.
thanks cunt my screen is now cracked FUUUUUUUUUUUCK

So is pirating comic books a thing?
Yeah, try out GetComics. They won't have absolutely everything, but they have most of everything you could ask for in great quality with good download speed usually (they also have a lot of bulk collections which are really useful when collecting for a character/event).

Guess I wont get into Marvel/DC comics then
It comes down to whether or not you find the Big Two's superheroes - and by extension, the concept of superheroes - interesting. If you do, I'd encourage you to dive in since you have decades of material across countless characters to experience before reaching the point where their weaknesses outweighed their strengths.

But if you're not particularly interested in superheroes or the Big Two's superheroes, then I can't necessarily argue you'll enjoy the comics on their own merits save for perhaps very particular stories/runs.

that's part of the problem tho, something even disney failed to capitalize when the MCU was big - where to start? after that at some point you have to follow the crossover shit, which might have started in another series you don't care about etc.
and even if it starts good the next run can be utterly ruined just by some dipshit as mentioned.

I don't fault anyone for being intimidated by where to start, but honestly it simply comes down to picking a character/team that seems interesting to you and researching people's opions on what the best runs/stories for them are.

Though I must admit I fail to see the connection with the MCU. Where to start is easy, you begin at Iron Man.

after that at some point you have to follow the crossover shit, which might have started in another series you don't care about etc.
This touches upon something inherent to Marvel and DC's stories that one has to accept if they want to read them, and that's the fact you're either going to be okay with missing some content/context for things, or you're going to be autistic enough to read everything.

I'm sat somewhere in the middle. I try to read what has an impact on the characters/teams I'm interested in if it happens during or before a run I'm reading, but if it doesn't or it has no real impact then I don't tend to fret over it.

I agree though, the shift to crossovers and events as a driving force in the genre was catastrophic.

and even if it starts good the next run can be utterly ruined just by some dipshit as mentioned.
Completely agree here. Justice League International/America is a wonderful example of this.

DeMatteis and Giffen's run is one of my favorites I've read so far. Despite any flaws it may have (which it has many), it balanced superhero stakes with interpersonal dynamics, drama and comedy nearly perfectly. By the end, they managed to build the team from constantly being on the verge of killing each other to being an actual family.

Then Jurgens came in and shit all over it.

That being said, I wouldn't give up the experience I had reading it, even with knowing the direction it would go. Plus, the former writers' run ended in a great place, so I can easily stop there when re-reading it (though I know not every run has that luxury).

However, that's the one nice thing about comics having a revolving door of writers. Usually when their time on the book ends, it wraps up the plot threads it was telling well enough to where you can simply stop there. The mindset when going through them is very similar to that of going through an anthology.

But like I said before, all of this will only work for you if you're invested in the idea of these characters and their world. If not, you probably won't have the patience to deal with all of the bullshit that plagued it in various ways even during their heyday.

That or just watch the DCAU (Batman, Superman, Justice League, Batman Beyond, etc.). You get some pretty great representations of DC's characters there + a generally high bar of storytelling quality (given that they had to make it work for kids too) and without any of the crossover/event troubles. You start at Batman and either end with JL or BB depending on what you prefer.

Though I must admit I fail to see the connection with the MCU. Where to start is easy, you begin at Iron Man.
iron man first appeared in the early sixties, now imagine you're a normalfag and "just want to read the iron man stuff " - way too much choice, on top of "this is nothing like the movies?!".
marvel and DC going on to pozz the shit out of it didn't help either. it didn't really start with the MCU, raimi's spiderman had a similar issue. MCU was just way bigger so possibly more demand.

for example a smart move would have been to repackage some runs into an easy digestible omnibus for the casuals.

anyway not really a topic about piracy, and like true nerds something to endlessly argue about. it was just my 2 cents why someone might have issues with capeshit :gunt:

Honestly, it's better than ever, but less people are doing it. Personally do both.

I am finding a lot more stuff I use to pirate simply free on Youtube though

Nothing ruins a trip through the horror section of a torrent site's library quite like this:

If you see that logo, just say no. Uncork'd is worse than Asylum or any of its contemporaries. Their complete inability to make a decent movie would be impressive if I wasn't a fucking masochist who can't just turn off a movie she doesn't like.

Uncork'd is not worthy of the hard drive space required for preservation. If it were up to me, distributing copies of their films would be a punishable offense.

That scene is so ORANGE it looks like they're growing weed there.

I recently broke my "no Uncork'd Entertainment" rule for Richard Harmon (Erik from Final Destination: Bloodlines) and even he couldn't save The Return.
Namedrop your favorites homie
Bitter Souls. Fantastic song, interesting blend of voodoo and Catholicism, lead bully wears an anime necklace for most of the movie, and this:

Some movies just have an image or two that sum them up perfectly and "protag's undead girlfriend using a clown skull as a finger puppet to deliver one-liner to Catholic priest" is one of those.

I am exactly the kind of person Puppet Killer was made for. The cast of high school students are all played by ridiculously older actors. 17yo main character is played by a 50yo man. A lot of references to the classics (three of the teens are named Jaime, Lee, and Curtis) and a reference to an even more obscure film that maybe 5 people will get that I have been unhealthily hung up on for months now:

The Soska twins' introductory scene is a direct reference to their directorial debut, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, which is endearingly horrendous given their next film, American Mary, is an absolute banger. The twins are completely uncredited and don't appear on the IMDb page despite my attempts to rectify that. IMDb also has a link to an article stating that they were co-writers and producers for Puppet Killer. That article no longer exits.

The movie I mentioned earlier ITT was Shark Girl.Shark Girl [IMDb].png

Lastly, there's one movie I bought on DVD years ago that deserves mention: A Beginner's Guide to Snuff. I fucking love a victim who can out-crazy the bad guys.

So is pirating comic books a thing? I did a couple searches and sure enough:

Getting older is realizing a lot of it has been faggot shit this whole time, but 2013-2015 seems to be the cutoff before everyone went full retard.
I actually learned how to pirate things because of comic books. years and years ago, as a grade school kid, I wanted to read this Batman comic I couldn't find anywhere and ended up finding a 4chan thread where people put links to scanned copies of like every issue of detective comics on 4shared and the like when sites like that were new, realized I could look up CD names with 4shared and find them, then started using limewire, and moved to torrents and ended up on luelinks somewhere in there too.

Myrient has been "archived" by the Minerva Project, but they're all torrents, meaning that the rarest stuff will depend on how many people are also seeding, meaning that nothing's actually saved-saved, meanwhile this new site has been down for hours anyway.

i mean torrents are a great way to save things and if they are something like 1TB batches, that's easy for most people.
still, i can understand from your point why this is annoying. we're about to be halfway throughout the month and despite a solution arising and it being put into effect, it may not be viable long term.

It's rather important that the data be preserved at all. Any extended runway allows more time for someone to archive it or make it available on a more permanent basis.

yeah i'm hoping people are able to comb together seedboxes for a time being so all of Myrient can seed for a while, and then after like 1-2 years of constant seeding all of it should've hopefully gotten through to everyone.

edit: i'll be more than happy to seed almost half a terabyte of games if i REALLY comb through everything.
cause i have a handful of games on consoles like the 360 and it's an absolute pain in the ass to actually rip the discs.
i don't want to mod my console and i also don't want to find the needed pc parts just to get everything working.

Falling down the rabbit hole of early 2000s horror movies on various torrent sites is bringing me back to weekend "lessons" with my mom (read: plunking our asses down on the couch/recliner and throwing on a random horror flick after I've done my homework/chores). Feels very cozy.

My autistic ass is very meticulous about storing/cataloging her movie collection, especially her rapidly expanding collection of standalone horror movies that don't belong to series/franchises. Got an entire Excel workbook for that shit. I am so fucking glad I found this thread. I currently have 289 unwatched horror movies. Sounds like a lot until you you crunch the numbers. I go through 5 movies a week. That's 260 movies a year. If I were to stop adding to that library right now, I'd be out of movies in just over a year.
