Piracy General

how do you guys deal with media severs? i have fast enough internet where i could seed everything and run the media server simultaineously but my vpn provider automatically shuts off after a month of connection and the port changes every time it disconnects. do i really have to use a second computer to make this autonomous?
easy way: set up a reminder to manually restart and setup the VPN setup before it expires
harder way: set up a virtual machine or a docker container that automatically reconnects the vpn, changes the port it proxies to your media server, and updates your domain record with the new ip address
that being said I'm not famillar with your setup or what software you're usiong

Do you need to stream media outside your network?

The easier way is still just going and resetting everything. I have a spare computer so I might as well just do that for now and maybe in a few years I'll go through the trouble of doing all that other stuff.

Redditor-coded non-answer.

I gotta say, I'm also scratching my head trying to think of a situation where I'd be outside my house and have to stream my pirated shit. I mean, no doubt it's a fun project to set up your own catalogue you can access from everywhere. I just can't think of anywhere besides home where I would be for a substantial enough length of time that I would want to watch TV, where watching TV is also practical and it just makes the amount of vitriol @Flatline caught here kind of funny.

For example, I wouldn't want to watch TV on a walk or at the park with my kids. It's not practical when driving or working because while I can listen, I wouldn't be able to watch. I wouldn't have a stable enough connection on a plane. What the fuck are you guys doing where you need constant access to your media when you're out and about? Are you like those fucking jeet door dash drivers that have shit playing obnoxiously on their phone 24/7? Are you on public transport for two hours a day? I know someone threw the word Redditor out there, but it just reminds me of those fucking nerds on Reddit who post pics of themselves playing their little emulation handhelds on the beach and eating lunch at work. Not being able to go a few hours without consuming some form of popular media is perhaps the most Redditor thing of all.

I'm not gonna powerlevel just to dunk on you for not having an imagination. There's tons of situations where I am watching pirated media away from home.

Yeah that's roughly me too, but mostly because Canadian bandwidth is expensive and slow and if I was going to be watching on the go, I'd be transcoding down from my usual standards.

But the big use case I'd imagine would be to keep kids sedated with videos.

I only asked because if the issues only occurred when streaming content outside your house, was there an alternative path to keeping everything in-house? I didn't know your tech stack or full situation nor am I a mind reader, so I wanted to get some more information. My apologies if my question came off as "Redditor-coded." I should've led with a technical question instead of one focused on motivation.

When I travel I try to bring everything I may want with me. For places without connectivity I'll copy stuff to the iPad or Phone. For the hotel I have a Raspberry Pi with a 4TB SSD I copy everything I might want before leaving home. New stuff I can copy to the pi via rsync or login to my home network and copy it to a web server directory so I can download straight to the phone or tablet.

I created an Ansible script to set up a gluetun docker container and route all the torrent traffic through that. You need proper health checks on the containers for the dependant containers to restart. Otherwise, they end up in this borked state where they have no network. Don't have VPN into my network yet (don't really need it tbh).

1. Watching shows when you have some down time somewhere and have your phone or laptop
2. Sharing your collection with your parents with a Netflix-like interface (they like some of the more obscure stuff like Seven Faces of Dr Lao)
3. Sharing with friends
4. Reading ebooks during work breaks
5. listening to music/audiobooks at work or when driving
Etc

What if a big titty goth girl invites you over for Netflix & Chill and there's nothing to watch? You can wink at her, access your private server, and watch Serial Experiments Lain with subtitles. Works every time.

For the record, I think setting up your own servers for shit is completely and totally based regardless. I just found it kind of funny someone questioned why you'd want to set up a media server you can access externally and people reacted like he whipped his dick out in church.

We have very different parents.

I always carry two Gameboy Colors and two copies of Warlocked and a link cable for this very reason.
