Very solid advice. Boiling is a guarantee to kill pathogens, but distillation removes just about everything.
Everything but the distillates like organic fluids, benzene, pfas etc ...

Chlorinated water can be simply boiled to remove chlorine.
If you are using filters to filter shit water, you are already doing things wrong. You start with fresh, clean source and sanitize it so it won't make you sick or give you parasites. A lot of animals shit and piss in the water and that's where you get them.
Filters can get infected with bacteria as well and can be a source of pathogens. Having a clean drinking supply is vital and there's no better way than to do it than with boiling.
All the sand, grout and other youtube garbage filter ideas have to be sanitized-boiled as well before use, else you are just adding more dirt to the water. Sand, esp. construction grade can and will contain heavy metals as well.

Option A - Learn how to make your own filters. It's really not that hard, just make sure you have spare 5 gallon buckets (you should be doing this anyway), sand, the ability to make your own charcoal, etc. If it's not rainwater, then you'll also want to boil it. You'll need the ability to have a covered fire for just about any survival situation imo. Note that with multiple buckets, you can daisy-chain or stack buckets with different filtration levels for longer-lasting filtration. Look up some videos on making your own filters.

Option B - Buy a filter system, preferably both a manual and battery-powered pump, and store a bunch of extra filters. You'll still want to boil the water if it's not freshly collected rainwater. Don't risk it.

Option C - Stock up on water purification tablets. I don't recommend this unless being mobile is a part of your plan, because you still need to filter the crap out of it anyway, and the tablets are not very cost effective. Couldn't hurt to buy at least one pack though.

I have all three options personally, and also plan to get a well drilled soon. Water is obviously crucial to survival, and you want to be spending as little time and as few calories as possible obtaining it because you'll have a lot of other shit to deal with.

- Lifestraws are cool for being ultra-portable and giving emergency liquid, but they should be the backup of your backup, not your primary water source.
- Keep winter in mind while planning your water acquisition/filtration. If you have a larger filter, you obviously don't want it to freeze.
- Filter life can vary depending on what you put in it. Use muddy swamp water and it'll fail much sooner. Instead, use something like a cloth or old shirt to get the water semi-clear before shoving it through your filter.
