This is a very under-cooked take. I recommend you read it over and come to your senses, since you post in the OSS thread and are, I assume, a privacy conscious person. Dealing with pedophiles (or any bad actor in general) is an immutable drawback that comes with hosting any public service, and has been for millennia, and this place is no different.
I can only assume the reason why you called the act of hosting these services "completely and utterly pointless" is because of the fact that this was just some random guy with 0 experience, who most likely didn't contact any lawyer or legal help throughout the process and just shot himself in the foot by running it like that, on some cheap ass Contabo VPS. I kinda get your point there. I'm actually pretty skeptical of the whole "seizure" story.

At its launch, it was hosted using a ColoCrossing VPS (AS36352), at IP 192.210.170.144 (Buffalo, NY), which he bought through a reseller, Virmach (AS25693) [source 1 (A), source 2 (A)]. This was the case until July 5th, 2022, where it was relocated (A) to Contabo (AS51167), at IP 173.249.47.55 (Lauterbourg, Grand Est, France), which is a city located right on the border with Germany. It then changed again around June 21st 2025. No change in hoster or location, only in IP address, 161.97.173.73, which lasted until the closure of the service. Another IP address I found for the service is from a Shodan search result which gives back the IP 75.119.132.119, still with the same service and location as the last 2 (Wed, 15 Apr 2026 16:19:36 GMT).
It is very safe to assume he did not personally host any of his mail servers at his personal residence, since he has talked about server migration on his Twitter [A] multiple times and complained about his VPS hosters in the past.
The guy has yet to provide any actual solid evidence of any seizure or police warrant. As far as I could tell, there have been no major changes made to his NS records (common for federal seizure of domains) or MX or any other record. It's been radio silence since that post, if we exclude the fact that he has very very recently updated his page to do the following things:
- Change his contact email from "soup@pissmail.com" to "trash@soup.moe"
- Remove the very outdated list of websites he hosted at the bottom of his webpage

I don't care enough to do a full phonebook, the data is there however.
I don't know if the guy used the "they seized my shit" card as an excuse to ditch this weight off his back or something, but if it isn't an excuse, he should provide at least some proof about the seizure of his server. His statement is very cryptic. As far as the person itself, he's just your average german anime-obsessed /pol/tard from 4cuck.

Not going to defend having edgelord domains like that, but I can almost guarantee that's not what got him raided. Germany doesn't give a shit about children. They are notorious for handing out featherweight sentences for crimes against children that are outright insulting to the victims. Think of the worst shit you can come up with being punished by two years on probation.

I'm not skeptical of the seizure at all, it doesn't surprise me. I'm also not saying that nobody should try it either (it's actually in the part you quoted) - I'm saying that even if you do all the work, pay for everything and then do the real dirty stuff that there really isn't much point in hosting these kinds of things.
Some people can choose to interpret that with a take like "don't even bother trying then", despite me literally telling people to try it and that's fine. I do have strong beliefs in privacy and security and like i mentioned before, I ran a few of these and I'm here now saying that it was not worth hosting this kind of stuff and being forced to vet and delete illegal material. It's not an anti-privacy take, it's just common sense - everyone wants to use something privacy focused but nobody wants to be the guy where the buck stops.
There's a handful of people who choose to die on that hill, some examples that come to mind are vincent at cock.li and null and both of those had to move to eastern europe for a decade give or take. Catbox is the other example but I don't know who runs it. Nulls fortune has only turned around in the last year and it can still be stripped away at any moment, catbox had their funding rugpulled only a year ago and are still not meeting their infrastructure costs and AFAIK vincent is still in romania*. All three comply with court orders by the way, I'm sure you know that but putting it here for those that think elite tier opsec is some kind of failsafe. It isn't, the only thing you have in your favor is that if you act on every single report you receive then you shouldn't have many serious issues. Proton is probably the first company that'll come to mind for 99% of people when the word privacy is mentioned but the next thing you'll nearly always here is about that time they complied with a court order and some french protestor got arrested. This isn't abnormal, it's every day.

Obviously you should if you can but now you're expected to pay for the service, maintain it, keep it legal, delete illegal material and also pay for your own legal defense .....for what? Nobody has yet given any reason.
This guy may have the added obstacle of being a retard but that doesn't detract from my position that putting yourself in that situation to begin with is pointless. My initial post was a bit rushed, especially the "enabling pedophiles" part and I do kind of regret not clarifying it more. Then again when a domain used is cheese.pizza maybe we can just add 2+2 and agree 4 is a reasonable guess.
Here's some additional context for the "enabling" part i mentioned. Many many years ago I woke up to an email from a german (ironic) researcher who had found tens of links to my filehost posted on a forum on TOR. He told me there was screenshots in the thread and explained that it was images and videos of an infant being raped. The file was a passworded zip and he'd sent me the password. I sat and looked at the zip for probably 2 or 3 minutes and i couldn't bring myself to open it. I enabled access logs and saw the file was being downloaded 5-10 times a second. I checked and saw that was a little under 13,000 archives in total, the overwhelming majority would be fine but something clicked and I realised that it's completely unwinnable and that if i wanted to continue, i'd have to accept the fact that it was going to exist in some capacity whether I liked it or not and that just wasn't acceptable to me. Everything was torn down and deleted before breakfast.
I know for a fact there's a bunch of people with more mettle than me here, I bet they'd last longer and overcome things i couldn't. They should try it.
*my understanding for moving abroad was to be able to afford to eat and pay rent while running these rather than running it under a different jurisdiction btw.
