Let's Sperg Playing FPS custom maps cause - Duke Nukem 3D and Quake ahoy

Oh, it's *that* Duke Nukem, the original original.

I had some legit shareware games during that era but I never saw either the original Duke Nukem or its child-friendly sibling Commander Keen until years later.

I don't think any console ports exist but this would've been an ideal candidate for a Sega Master System port, at least in Brazil since the Master System was already on its last legs in North America by the time this game got released on PC in 1991.

You're talking about DOS PC games of the era of the first Duke Nukem being rudimentary but the weird thing is that, while PCs of the era struggled with side-scrollers, they were well ahead of consoles when it came to polygon-fill 3D graphics.

Here's Test Drive III: the Passion which came out a year before the first Duke Nukem. The 3D graphics are primitive compared to even racing games on the original Playstation but this was state of the art for games playable at home in 1990 and almost on par with the arcade version of Hard Drivin'.

Totally didn't think of that.

I don't think Duke Nukem 2 had more colors on screen but it had slightly better color design and it seemed to use more dithering (where, instead of hard boundaries between two colours, the colours dissolve into one another gradually with dots) to give the illusion of midway shades between two colours.

Commander Keen and the two early Duke Nukem games were only able to achieve smooth scrolling on PCs because of the "Adaptive tile refresh" feature of EGA mode, where only portions of the play screen needed to be redrawn for each frame rather than redrawing the entire play screen, which was too much for most PCs of the day to handle. For whatever reason, "Adaptive tile refresh" wasn't possible in VGA mode. Id Software essentially sacrificed pretty colours for smooth scrolling.

Playing this in Co-op, feel free to PM me if you want to join in on the dumb fuckery:

More Duke 3D:

I haven't watched it..but I have to say I played the original Dukes when I was a kid. I didn't find them interesting then, what is the draw of the new Duke Nukems now? This has nothing to say about your ability to play them, I just find the 2-d DOS platformers boring. So sell me on it.

Duke 2 is pretty bad, but I'd say your tolerance of Duke 1 and 3D all depend on how much you like being thrown into large, open, levels with little guidance

That's not saying that the levels are confusing or anything like that, but, especically so in Duke Nukem 3D, you really need to be the kind of gamer who likes to explore levels in depth to get a lot of enjoyment out the games.

Beyond that, if you don't like NES platformers, you won't like Duke 1.

And if you are not a big fan of first person shooters, then don't go for Duke 3D.

I have not played a Duke Nukem game newer than Duke Nukem 3D, so I have no opinion on them.

Eh I never cared for the 2D Dukes. A better choice is Commander Keen, mentioned earlier as "child friendly" version but imo superior in all ways.

Though if you really want to see some nutty shit, check out Monster Bash, released in a time before legislation of the ESRB ratings board. I won't spoil the surprise but it is, by all appearances, a game for children. Until you actually play it. In any case, it was also my favorite 2D platformer by far
