Pokémon (Not-So) Griefing Thread - Scarlet and Violet Released with 10 Million Copies in First 3 Days in Buggy States

So I beat Pokemon Scarlet last night and ho boy what a mess of a game that is.

I'll go over what I'll like first. Free roam is awesome, being able to pick and choose which pokemon you want to get is neat and being able to see Shinny's makes shinny hunting a bit easier. The new pokemon are pretty neat and i love the idea of Paradox Pokemon. Specially the future versions as I'm big into mecha shit.

Cons. Performance in this game absolutely fucking blows. I don't know what they are doing with whatever budget to come up with this but its fucking disgusting. I've always loved the character designs of Pokemon but this gen is just bland I hate it.

Also the gym making you doing an test before you can enter and they can shove you out is kinda insulting.

Either way I'm gonna be transferring my shit to home and absolutely going to forget about the game.

The Indigo Disk releases in less than two weeks, I guess I should prepare a team since my VGC team isn’t particularly good.

I agree with this to a certain extent, the only issue I have is that the loss of PLA’s Shiny spawn SFX makes Shiny hunting a bit more difficult with some species being downright obnoxious.

Agreed to an extent as well, I just wish that Paradox Pokémon went beyond “X-Pokémon-but-add-dinosaur/robot-features-to-it” since it kind of makes them feel a bit same-y.

It’s been mentioned before ITT but there are two major issues with SV that appear to be the craptastic performance: a known memory leak issue and the game rendering a planet-sized sphere of water with Paldea on top of it to get the water physics right. I wouldn’t be surprised if the workplace restrictions put into place during the Wu Flu fiasco also caused less QA testing during the gam,e’s development, it affected other games that were developed during that time (one of them being SSBU’s Steve DLC).
I've always loved the character designs of Pokemon but this gen is just bland I hate it.
The character designs in SV are definitely hit-or-miss, some characters look decent but others look like dogshit, it doesn’t help that the SV in general has a semi-realistic look to it and that one of the newer character designers worked on World’s End Club before working on SV.
Also the gym making you doing an test before you can enter and they can shove you out is kinda insulting.
I‘m personally not insulted by it, GF is essentially trying to mix the trials from SM/USUM’s Island Challenge (which were well-liked since they broke the monotony of past Gens’ Gyms) and the Gym Leader battles.

Also, it’s worth noting that while GF advertised that you could take on the Gyms, Titans, and Team Star Bases in any order you like they all still follow a path due to them all having set levels.

Well, I finally completed Grand Colosseum. Took me a bit longer than I planned since, well, the mod certainly wasn't kidding about increasing it's difficulty. I will write my impressions here. For context, I didn't just complete the main game, but also the post game and took the Mt. Battle 100 trainers in a row challenge(which might have the toughest battles in all of Gen 3).
Since this is a total conversion instead of a brand new game like SG97, I will simply list pros and cons compared to the base game. If you never played Colosseum I heavily suggest you try it out, it's a double-battle centric title with a unique atmosphere and a very unique balance centered around limited pool of Pokemon, most of which you have to "purify" instead of just being able to use them from the get-go. That said, I actually used some of my own Pokemon for the most part, using Trigger's PC app(Gen 3 Pokebank) to transfer them over. While not the intended experience it makes both this one and original Colosseum much more enjoyable as I always saw the double battles themselves as the main reason to play the game, with Shadow Pokemon a nice extra. I actually wrote a .txt doc to draft my team-building sets, like I usually do with other games(SG97 was an exception since I was walking in blind and couldn't transfer my old Pokemon), so details of my team will be listed in an attached file below.

For now, here are my impressions of Grand Colosseum:
Pros:
+Harder difficulty, just as advertised
+Physical/Special split and Fairy Type additions
+Brand new moves taken from later generations replacing some of the more useless base game ones
+New Shadow Pokemon and enemy teams, to complement above changes
+Re-usable TMs like in later generations
+Mt. Battle is now a place for EV training: First 60 battles are each dedicated to a specific stat(SpDef, Def, Spd, SpA, Atk, HP in that order) while the remaining 40 are now the toughest battles in the game, including facing off against Legendary Pokemon in the last few battles. This and the above point make it worth playing by itself, if you're planning to train good amount of Pokemon competitively for Battle Frontier or even base game story(Which can be done by transferring Pokemon back and forth via Trigger's PC app)
+Two brand new Pokemon: Alolan Marowak and Ninetales
+Shadow Pokemon have rare or unobtainable moves, just like in Gale of Darkness
+All Pokemon now evolve normally, without needing trading or special items
+Very useful level up sets for all Pokemon that give them moves they cannot normally learn in Generation 3 or sometimes at all. See my .txt document for more info
+Game lets you choose your own region starter and Legendary trio(base game only has three Johto starters and Legendary Dogs, you can now choose Kanto or Hoenn "editions" of the game)
+Many Pokemon have added typings which make them much more interesting to play with or against(see my .txt document for some examples)
+Many Pokemon have brand new abilities, some of which are the same as their hidden abilities down the line. Notably, all three gen starter Pokemon have their hidden abilities, such as Blaziken's Speed Boost or Venusaur's Chlorophyll. Unfortunately, due to how Gen 3 games work, neither the abilities or typings are transferable over to main titles
+Some one-time tutor moves available as infinite-use TMs, making Grand Colosseum even more invaluable for Battle Frontier enjoyers
+Many trainers, that includes story bosses, now have not just competitive teams but one centered around actual strategies and gimmicks
+Colosseums are now gyms, with the first 2 each having 4 rounds each based off one specific type and the last pre post-game Colosseum having two types covered in each round

Cons:
-Awful new Rui model
-Trigger's PC users beware: The new Alolan Pokemon corrupt the savefile and make it unusable within the app. Moreover, even seeing them and registering them in the Pokedex cause saves to be unreadable by said app, only way to be able to transfer Pokemon back and forth(such as for EV training or to get special moves) is to simply not encounter them. First Alolan Pokemon is encounted in The Under, so if you're wishing to use Trigger's PC, simply never fight Venus or progress past that point. This does make a good portion of Shadow Pokemon uncatchable this way, unless you do what I did below:
-With my save unreadable to Trigger's PC, I had to get creative with my options. What worked was the following: Download "PokemonGCSaveEditor" app that lets me manually change Alolan Pokemon caught to normal Kanto variants, save all the PC boxes using PKHex once the two "Alolan" Pokemon show up as uncorrupted, and then transfer them over to a back-up save I made before Venus, which let me create/replace Pokemon that I had at that point using PKHex. That savefile now has Pokemon from the completed savefile but game progress essentially halted to the point before corruption. Not a perfect solution, as that means I cannot bring over any items not being held or divide money/Pokecoupons with other games as Trigger's PC allows, but at least I got to retrieve my old/new Pokemon. Heavily recommend to backup a save before fighting Venus and then transferring Pokemon using this method once you finish the game
-Somewhat sketchy balancing if you're not using transferred Pokemon like me. Note that there is only one dungeon that you can grind for XP before post-game, other than Mt. Battle, which makes what is already a boring process even more tedious if you're unlucky enough to need leveling
-While I appreciate the smaller pool of Pokemon forcing you to think outside the box, as well as making more Pokemon viable now, the teams the game throws at you later on are ridiculous competitive teams often having Legendary Pokemon within them. Not sure if it's viable to complete the game only with the Shadow Pokemon the game provides, wild Pokemon obviously don't exist so I heavily recommend simply bringing over your favorites from other games
-Some text descriptions don't match up anymore(ie Gen 2 starters are still brought up when I chose the Gen 3 option in incidental text), one of the last trainers in Mt. Battle was changed to reference some sort of streamer the ROMhack creator liked for some reason, even namedropping "Youtube" in a game that predates it(there is no changes like that in text anywhere else in the mod)
-Some animations for new moves or moves that Pokemon wasn't supposed to learn look janky, for obvious reasons

Overall, I very much liked this mod. Just for the boon of useful moves and an easy way to train my party makes this worth a play for anybody serious about Pokemon. I wouldn't recommend this to casual players, as the game gets very hard towards the end(especially in Mt. Battle and in post game), in that case I recommend base Colosseum which is still very hard by modern standards but much more forgiving. Other than the small nitpicks I mentioned(and a large one if you plan on using Trigger's PC) this is better than original in every way, and I plan on using this ROMhack for years to come to help train my team for future playthrus/Battle Frontier. The fact I now have two different Colosseum files loaded up in Dolphin is a testament to that.

If you're playing along, I plan to try Gale of Darkness ROMhack Pokemon XG: NeXt Generation. Grand Colosseum has been a valuable experience, as far as to keep backup files for Trigger's PC, so I will have to do my research to see if this one also has some brand new Pokemon like the Alolan forms here. Considering that Gale of Darkness is an improvement over Colosseum in pretty much every way(except for the setting, as it waters it down a little) I can't wait to see what a ROMhack similar to GC will look like for it. Honestly, both of the GC titles are pretty much what I imagine perfect 3D console Pokemon games to be, forget the Switch titles entirely. This would be all I need if people found a way to mod these games with new campaigns just as easily as the Gameboy/DS titles.

"tism time: Scarlet and Violet are pretty clearly meant to be de-facto orange and purple in their color schemes this gen, but it bugs me they still follow scarlet's actual red chrome a lot in advertising and media. Shoulda just chosen names that either imply the usual red/blue dichtomy or non-color names and slap the red/blue on them.

The slow news days eem to grating on us.
I awai the release of The Indigo Disk. At least I can actually ge to my hack that way.
Eh, I've just been playing a lot of poke recently and I always end up blurting random thoughts into the thread when that happens.

What do you guys think of Raboot's design? I've been watching random clips from the show and he's really grown on me. Look at him hide behind his ears when he's embarrassed:

It almost make me forget how much they dropped the ball with Cinderace's design.

Ok I'll stop now.

I had him in the game and he was better looking than Cinderace but his lack of suitable animations was ridiculous.

I'll never stop hating this trend of just taking a career or something similar and just making it a humanoid animal creature and calling it a Pokémon. A cat wrestler, a bird archer, a cat musician, a bird dancing faggot, a frog ninja, and so on.
Pretty much everything Lone Star said up here sums it up. Doesn't help that Scorbunny's colors look weird and every decision made about its design was executed poorly.

Yeah, the slow news week is a bit grating. It's kind of like anticipating the dentist I guess. Just some really shitty thing that you know is going to happen and you're waiting to get it over with.

I think the opposite. I a mor excited, not just because I am going to get hacking material but I will have my curiosity satisfied. There is also me awaiting thi since... about all this year, actually. A big part of the grate is the wait since February.

I just hope that both the DLC are going to be bundled wi the main game in the future.

Okay, actual autism time ahead. Get those puzzle pieces ready for me!

I agree 100% in spirit with you guys. The starters being "humanoid", jobs, both. But my kicker is it would take only so many, IMO just a couple minor design tweaks OR even merely posing/making them act more animalistically, to make a lot of them legitimately on par with older designs or at least good ones.

Like, Emboar and Delphox only really need to go on four legs. Delphox already has a normal fox body (I believe) and Emboar just looks like a top-heavy boar. Chesnaught is the same - it can amble around like those ancient glyptodonts, which I think are its animalistic inspiration. Greninja may look a bit silly but pose it sitting like a frog does. Incineroar is to me proof this concept works, as crazy as it sounds: maybe it's the cat nerd in me, but it's actually pretty generally similar to sabertooths (buff, longer arms than legs, giant flexible fingers and semi-plantigrade feet to... wrestle prey down and stay steady as it does so. Think a cat stretched into a bear shape) or a particularly top-heavy/exaggerated modern tiger. It even goes for some of the more monster-like ones just merely being posed more "animalistic" or "kaiju-like". Again Incineroar clasping its fingers together, standing with a hunch and an angry look than rougish grin, would make it feel more like a big monsterish cat standing up.

At that rate, again IMO, it would make them feel a lot more natural and on the level of Empoleon, which technically has a job/gimmick, clothes, and personality but didn't feel like it couldn't not act like a penguin. Or Feraligatr, which doesn't match actual gators 1:1 in anatomy but still gets put into official art swimming around in rivers and stuff. And so you can have Chesnaught stand bipedal in battle, but may run on four legs to get anywhere fast on the world map, Incineroar can have a two-legged walking animation but quadrupedal running one like some other mons have, etc. It just feels more like Game Freak just doesn't want to do what it claims in thinking how the pokemon would act in an ecosystem in addition to its gimmick, or work the gimmick in with the actual animal. I can accept a cat wrestler or frog ninja, they make sense, just exaggerate the existing animal design that was made than force the animal into the gimmick.

Some aren't salvagable at all though. I genuinely apologize to (Friendly) Primarina.

You made me check /vp/
At this point, I have no hope for it. The other two were a crapshoot, Entei is going to be even worse
100 bucks it's going to be bipedal furrybait.

@Mayor Cody Travers
The 3D Models are the main problem. Their poses and movements are what makes them uncanny.
Especially Delphox and Cinderace don't pass. They play like fielding a human with a fox/wabbid mask.

It's the legs with Cinderace that makes a big difference IMO. Look at Delphox's legs. You can barely see them but it's obvious it has the same legs as Braixen i.e. not human shaped at all:

1701592895810.png
Incineroar has defined thigh muscles, which make it look far more human-like, but not as much as...
1701592998596.png
Cinderace not only has defined glutes. but also defined calves. The clown shoe feet all add to the uncanny feel, like it's a guy in a suit. I could tolerate the "job" nature, as @Lone Star so aptly put it. I could even tolerate the stupid little Jeremy Beadle-esque hands. It's the legs and feet more than anything else.
