which games, non-remake are better than Emerald? it seems like the peak of the franchise.
Platinum, HGSS, BW2 - I know that you said non-remake but seeing as how Emerald is a remake of R/S I think it defeats the purpose of including that as a qualifier.

Friend, having opinions is okay, even if they're wrong. I have like 600+ hours in my ultra game compared to about 250 hours in my Sun game, and 150+ of those hours is just grind for Battle Tree and the battles within it. I think that about says it all.
USUM were the first redux games that I felt were worse than the original. I can understand why someone would prefer them to the originals, but if you're like me and don't care about Shinies, found the hard shift from Legendaries to Ultra Beasts and mulitverses really stupid, and don't like the Battle Tower, it took SM from a diet BW and turned it into a visual novel with a Pokemon interface and a lot of forced memes.
I see some people here we're shit-talking ORAS, I kinda want to fedpost at the moment because that shit was my jam in middle school.
I don't think ORAS were good remakes of RSE but I don't dislike them either - they were the last mainline Pokemon games I enjoyed. Maybe some of it was nostalgia but it didn't feel like the grind that Alola felt like and the setting still felt like Pokemon to me, as opposed to the very sterilized Alola.

I will never forgive GF for choosing Seviper over my boy for Emerald.
It's weird, too, because I was checking to see the exclusives... And they really said fuck zangoose, and fuck lunatone.

To a lesser extent the meditite line, and roselia.

No zangoose :(
I'm pretty sure you could get it in the GC games, along with Roselia who also wasn't available in Emerald among others. This is why Ruby and Sapphire are truly irrelevant as of Emerald's release, even in Gen 4 HGSS or Platinum didn't bring back Stunky or Purrloin, they did actually remain 100% exclusive to Diamond and Pearl until BW2 I believe, and even then relegated to Hidden Grottos.

you scare me

it was once my jam too but after I played the originals there was no going back
it's a perfectly serviceable game, I just find it inferior to the original three in many important aspects and would not recommend it to anyone who's played them

Original Ruby and Sapphire, on the other hand, I don't see why you would ever play them. Even if you have nostalgia for them, they lack technical improvements and are buggier than Emerald and FRLG.
gonna be honest, I personally do it because they're kind of fun to break. The Pickup trick doesn't work in Emerald and that, combined with the lack of phys/spec split, makes them really cheesy fun if you're in the right mood for it. I also prefer some minor aspects like the font and Brendan's design, but those are so incredibly unimportant to most of the game that they aren't by any means selling points.
Also, I like quite a few of the gen 3 Pokémon that're unobtainable in Emerald. Roselia, Lunatone, Medicham, all impossible to catch in Emerald for bullshit reasons. I miss 'em. :(
For a final reason: fuck Wallace. He's a fine enough gym leader but a Champion he is not.

I will never fucking get why they made it impossible to get the version exclusives in-game without trading in the third versions. Its literal nonsensical thinking on their part, as the third versions usually allowed you to at least catch both versions' respective legendaries.
MONEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

For example:

Correct! But only XD: Gale of Darkness!
If you had the wrong Gamecube game, you were shit out of luck. If you didn't have either Ruby or Sapphire, you were shit out of luck.
Gen 3 specifically is a hilariously thought-through machine that systematically locks certain Pokémon behind certain games. Almost without fail, at least two or three Pokémon will be exclusive to one game in the generation with few exceptions. Hoenn has a lot of new mon crowding out the old ones so they made remakes of the old ones to give access to specifically Kanto 'mons. But uh-oh, Masuda was retarded and decided to only let you use the original 151 in those remakes! Not even new evolutions introduced in 2 and 3, only their unevolved forms! So now they need to make another new game to contain all the Johto mon, which is what Colosseum ended up being, but oops that misses out on some mythicals so now they have to go and make a physical disk to contain older mythicals for people who missed out on the initial events.

It's ridiculous, and probably one of the only generations where you can legitimately obtain each and every single Pokémon in the entire generation's Pokedex within that generation without needing to be at the right place at the right time for myhtical events EDIT: I forgot you can't get the Old Sea Map or Aurora Ticket legitimately without events in gen 3 :( 384/386 is a pretty good track record compared to most generations though. It's quite the undertaking and pretty painful to do, but it's rather rewarding by the end of it and great for preservation.

You can't get this kind of shit with any other version past that. Gen 4+ relied on Wi-fi/temporary codes that expire (or cheating) for all their mythicals alongside the previous "right place right time" stuff so those ones are pretty much out the window and anything past gen 7 doesn't even have the entire Pokedex in it anyways. Gens 1 and 2 also rely a lot on "right place right time" unless you're playing virtual console, and the original cartridges are prone to dying when they run out of battery so it's nearly impossible to consistently keep a full dex on those anyways.

Anyways, gen 3 sperging over. I find it to be the perfect generation in terms of cohesion and quality, despite its flaws, and whenever this gets brought up I feel the need to rant about it because nobody seems to notice it and I find it very very cool. Even if it was hilariously scummy when it was still on the market.

While it's no substitute for just making one version where you can just get all the mons without needing to trade, something I don't see many people mention is that Platinum actually will allow you to fill out the national dex legitimately without needing to do anything special. If you just battle every NPC trainer and catch/evolve the remainder you will be able to complete the national dex without needing to trade or breed a single mon since they put the other starter lines, Eeveelutions, version exclusives and the cool new evolutions for the old mons on the NPC trainers. I don't think any other mainline Pokemon game has done that either.

While I'm not one of those people who cares about having every Pokemon in a single game - I can count on both hands the amount of Pokemon whose designs I like in Gens 6 and 7 - I appreciate how Platinum tried to push the regional dex concept to its limit to better integrate stuff like Pal Park and the GTS.

I'll always cherish ORAS because it's the game I filled made a living dex with. I saw some comment from a dev, I think, about it being really easy to do that in ORAS, so I took up that challenge... And while the mythical were very hard to manage, it was the 20th anniversary year, and they had those monthly mythical releases.

I haven't kept up with it as much, but using ORAS to finish most of it helped.

was playing pokemon scarlet today, had a mystery outbreak in the game's main region (aka not the dlcs), thought it was weird because i've seen pretty much every pokemon at least once. so i meander my way over to the outbreak. turned out to be a lycanroc outbreak, but specifically the dusk version, which fucking baffled me because the dusk version of lycanroc only appears for approximately 3 irl minutes, or about as long as dusk lasts in-game. there is no fucking way someone would be able to knock out ~60 dusk lycanrocs in 3 minutes, and even if they magically did, they'd still have to keep refreshing their spawns to maybe get a shiny to appear, all in under 3 minutes.

frankly i'm surprised they made it possible to even get dusk lycanroc outbreaks considering the absurdly short window of time you have for them to spawn.

still a cute pokemon, though, but then again i like the entire rockruff line

Same could be said for OG Diamond and Pearl, there's literally no reason to even buy them over any of the superior versions.
If you're talking Platinum over Diamond and Pearl, I can think of just one reason. There's an exploit that allows you to boundary break and access Darkrai and Shaymin without having access to their events. Platinum fixes this by not allowing those Pokemon to spawn unless you have the event items. Catching Darkrai and Shaymin and possibly hunting for their shiny variants are the only reason to play Diamond and Pearl over Platinum. That's discounting Pokemon exclusive to Diamond and Pearl if you care about finishing your Sinnoh Pokedex.

My brother loved doing the boundary break mystery zone exploit back in the day. Me, I actually created a set of custom Wonder Cards that you could share with others unlimited times. Back in Gen 4, there were a few Wonder Cards that you could redeem on multiple carts, such as berries and what have you, I took the event items(Letter for Shaymin, Member Card for Darkrai and the cut Azure Flute for Arceus and the key to get Rotom forms) and modified them to be shared on multiple carts, those carts could also share their wondercards unlimited amount of times as long as they kept them around, creating an infinite amount of giveaways if you wanted to. This means that once I share them, I can legit catch these three event Pokemon, even in Diamond/Pearl where these events never happened, surprisingly they're mostly the same thing as in Platinum. For those wondering, the DP Shaymin/Darkrai are not bankable and neither is the Azure Flute Arceus even from Platiunum, altho it DOES unlock a new event in HGSS if you bring it to the Sinjoh Ruins, letting you have two eggs instead of one.
I also did the same thing for actual Pokemon distributions, that includes beta/testing and giveaway Pokemon that can be shared unlimited amount of times to any Gen 4 cart, DPP and HGSS alike. I did the same with items like Master Ball/Enigma Berry that are hard to get. Reminds me of all the fun you could have tinkering with Gen 4 games, hell I recently recreated the infamous "Nigger Team Rocket Gengar" with Truant ability, which I am planning on creating a Wonder Card out of when I get to playing Gen 4 romhacks. This is a bit more than a meme, if you recall Truant is the last ability you want on a Pokemon...unless you have Skill Swap, in which case you now have a very quick Pokemon that will fuck you over on the first turn, even if you kill it in return. This means it is actually viable in Battle Tower and can be transferred to Gen 5 since those games have no checks like Bank does, should be even more fun in doubles or triples.
As for what where this Gengar is from...

Thank you for reminding me that Arceus browsing google images wasn't just a fever dream.
It gets better when you realize the real schizo lore the devs had in mind when designing this event, that we now know thanks to the leaks.
...would have been fun for them to actually *put* that lore somewhere around the time the game came out, you know in an anime movie or the manga if not in the games themselves, instead it gets buried in the official, canon Typhlosion, Lapras and Octillery rape folklore found within the same leak.

I can understand why they wouldn't want to put this kind of schizophrenia in the game if they thought the Azure Flute was too complex for their audience

(sorry for the shitty picture. Somehow, nobody has archived this basic shit properly in the months since it's been leaked.)

At least we got to see it eventually, even if by unofficial means. :)

As someone who has done Azure Flute event many times, I can tell you right now this just makes me laugh. Sure, there is little hint as to where you're supposed to go, but it's not like kids back then didn't have internet. Hell, more obscure than catching Arceus is the fact that in Platinum you get a free Flame Plate from a random Hiker if you have Arceus in your party. How are you supposed to know this?

Tfw we still don't know who smilay and birthly are
I like having some mystery left in the games, in this day and age where everything is explained, and datamined.
