I think most people here also don't grasp how unlikely this is to go to trial. Or how rare actual trials are in general these days.

Chris won't be able to afford a lawyer. Also the Police and prosecutors may come to the conclusion that either they deal with him now or he'll be more work down the road.

It really doesn't help Chris that the case has attracted a lot of publicity, that may have taken the authorities by surprise but still I imagine they don't want to get caught out again. If that means stowing Chris in jail for a couple of years, they'll probably be able to arrange that.
