How did the fire start?

Even if the wiring was faulty, the fact that the Chandlers made their home into a fire hazard with all the clutter is the real reason it went up in flames.
 
How old the home is? With that being said, the old and rotten electrical wiring is the main perpetrator there.
 
My theory is that Chris doesn't know that electricity and water are bad times waiting to happen as a combination, so he plugged the coffee maker into the bathroom plug, then put the water into it while it was turned on in an attempt to save some time until he could brew his java, from there you had the short at the breaker and a spark ignited insulation in the wall causing it to spread from there.

Has there ever been a Sonichu ripoff of any of the umpteenth Spider-Man/Electro comic/cartoon stories where water is used to ruin the electric hedgehog pokemon's powers? If not, it's evidence to me that he's likely never learned, never paid attention to the fact that, or just never understood, you don't mix the two.
 
I don't know why anyone thinks there would have been water in that bathroom. Aside from the toilet - which is probably drank empty by the dogs when not in use - it was probably quite rare for any water to flow in there.
I'm betting it went more or less like Chris said. He plugged the coffee machine in while its power switch was set to "on", sparks flew, and one of Barb's Goodwill polyester garments went up in a blaze. The rest was history.

I think it was a combination of a deteriorating electrical system, and Chris being careless.

There was a Keurig coffee maker was in the downstairs bathroom, surrounded by piles of garbage. Carelessness.

The house is 40 years old, and probably hasn't been maintained in over a decade. Faulty electrical AND Carelessness.

And then, we have to take into account the Chandler Insanity Factor™®©1982 - 20?? which virtually guaranteed something bad was going to happen.
 
I don't think it's necessarily even faulty wiring. If you plug in an appliance that's already on, you often get a spark. Barb just set things up to turn the million-to-one longshot into even odds. She probably had her oily rag collection piled up right next to the socket.

I have no idea why, if it's the timing or something we've seen before, but this doesn't strike me as too outlandish.
 
I say he started it himself in a hair-brained scheme to destroy the horde and cash in on the house's insurance policy. Basically it's like the plot to a Coen bros movie that doesn't exist... yet.
 
In newer houses don't outlets that are in wet areas have to have that little red button that keeps them from blowing if the outlet gets wet? In an older house they might be absent. That could've been the cause.
