If it is relevant to the discussion it implies that whoever does the self advertising is adding to the discussion in a meaningful way.

It's the poster's risk to be directly associated with the forum.

I say it wouldn't detract from the quality of any one discussion, if the self advertiser is being a faggot about it the users will tear him a new one, if he is being reasonable and cool about it there is literally no harm done.

Consistent rules are for democracies. The Farms live under a classical Benevolent Dictator. I see no reason Null cannot simply say "actually, that looks like something my users would like / I like / this person brought me fine cheeses, I shall let his self-promotion stand". Or not. According to his whim. Perhaps with a general public statement of "do not spam".

Spam is like the classic line about porn: "I don't know how to define it but I know it when I see it."

Functionally, it kind of happens irregardless. I'm considering here Vox Day's recent AMA on /r/gammasecretkings, which hates him. The plebbitors who run the place were salivating at the idea of having him answer their questions. He just ended up using it for self-promotion and ignoring most of the detractors. I promoted it, hoping there would be more lolcow milk flowing from it, but the practical outcome provided very little.

If it does not make the forum worse and it stays in its lane, then Null is right that it adds to "Legitimacy", which is a property I am happy to see the Farms gain.

If you want an example of a self promotion done right, I will direct you to @nidalnijmgames and the thread on his game.
He did not make the thread itself, but joined the farms to answer any questions and provide updates on his game. Due to the nature of his game, he would be hard pressed to do so anywhere else in this political climate without being censored or judged. As far as I know, he doesn't shill his game outside his thread and he doesn't make a nuisance of himself, in fact he's a very nice guy to talk to and he loves talking about topics other than just his game directly. When he does, he gives updates, sometimes behind the scenes sort of stuff, the kind of things you want to hear from a game dev, nothing heavy handed to force you to buy his product. I am not sure if his game is a financial success or if this thread on the farms helped him any, but I don't think it hurt anyone in the process, either. Plus, his game is pretty based, just as advertised.

If people like Nidal want to come here to promote their business or products and they're not obnoxious about it, I don't see why you shouldn't give them a chance. Some might have nowhere else to go without censorship, others might want to find self-minded people that they might find here, others want to promote something that only those who follow specific lolcows or communities like the sektur would care about. Naturally, this would be the place to do so.

This isn't an issue I feel very strongly about either way, and like I said it should be allowed strictly so we can judge each person on individual bases, depending on what they're selling or promoting and what their motives are.

Can I promote Russel Greers music and give my commentary?

I’m hoping this would get Taylor Switch ditch that looser and fuck Greer instead. I think this would be based.

I’m here to advertise my troll services, free of charge, I WILL hound whoever you want. Relentlessly follow them around until you are satisfied. Starting prompts would help jumpstart the process, but I can always come up with my own.

Remember to like, follow, and leave comments because engagement is good for my specs.

Voting no on this one.

I love the boys and girls on the Farms, I'd go so far as to say the best autists I will ever know have been met in some of these threads.....but lets not play pretend here. The userbase is comprised of people who habitually go through your personal history to find embarrassing things for people to laugh at and archive. If you're a normal human being, congratulations, you will have moments like that and if you're a creative person, you're going to have a lot of moments like that and they'll be worse.

This is a recipe for disaster.

I think it should be OK on a case by case basis. If someone is actively being an annoying fag about it, then they should be told to stop. But if it's just like, a single post it's not that much of a disruption

I kinda wish there was a "yes, but not in general" option. It'd be cool for KF to have the equivalent of the personals for advertising, if it's going to be allowed on the site. I think it'd help the problem of people who'd want to spam random threads if self-promotion isn't prohibited by having a spot to point at where it's allowed as opposed to everywhere else.

I say that all advertisements must be manually approved by @Null personally for reasons twofold:

1. Null would have to take time out and sift through ads.
2. Anything approved by him is going to be at least vetted for quality, or at least worthy of mockery.

I agree with others about a dedicated shill thread/board to keep threads from being derailed, but I also think that linking your activities here to any sort of business or livelihood is a bad idea. Do you really want customers potentially finding you on the 'doxxing people' forum?

As long as it's in the right forum and not someone going to random threads posting links or shit like "You know, that story of Chantal shitting on the floor after a failed hookup inspired me to write my comic boom Slamma Cow. Buy now from Indiegogo." It should be fine.
