This was brought up before, but I was copying some stuff from facebook into notepad and noticed alt text shows up there (guess I never tried to paste images in notepad before) and reminded me of the emoticon bullshit so I looked it up to double check if screen readers do in fact read alt text

To clarify, the bullshit they do would, from a screenreader, sound like "ugh I'm so sad graphic: frown emoticon image: frowny face"

I just tried it with Chromevox, it pronounced "X-I-R", "F-O-L-X", "Latnin-at". I'm sure Chromevox is a white cishet shitlord though.

Devil's advocate: I actually have a doctor-diagnosed (I know, how oppressive) allergy to petroleum-based chemicals (my solution for entering a mall through a department store's perfume counter zone is pretty much "hold breath and run" because artificial preservatives etc.), and I can be in a normal car while it's being fueled -- but diesel fumes are roughly a zillion times more obnoxious, especially if a window is open even a bit.
